What time should we be heading out? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by chixonthefly
I don’t close but both my manager and co workers say they don’t leave til 12am as the store closes at 10pm. I’m starting to close as of today and I’m kind of nervous.

Is it normal to get out so late?
Professional-Lie6004 76 points 1y ago
This is not normal, that means the close is not being managed well, time management is nonexistent. If CSR cards are followed throughout the day there should be no reason for this, closing tasks should start as soon as the closing ssv comes in because there are plenty of things the can be done for close that won’t disrupt the flow of the store while you are open. This also lends the question of how y’all have that many expendable hours throughout the week because if the store is closing with 2 partners and 1 ssv that’s an additional 4.5 hours of labor added on per day this is happening. Overall this is not normal at all.

If it's a shift on literally their like first week something like 11:15 wouldn't strike me as uncommon. Or if all of the baristas closing are greenbeans and need to be taught how to do everything. But yeah, with an average or experienced team more than 45 minutes past closing time shouldn't be happening, let alone regularly. There's a point where the shift should just be writing "Sorry, xyz happened." and leaving it for the next day. Staying a full hour and a half past scheduled end-of-shift sounds ridiculous.
Pantera_Nehgrow100k 3 points 1y ago
In this case, 120 min not 90! Lol
esaeklsg 2 points 1y ago
120 past close, I was counting from when shift ends. I switched when I was counting from a couple times in the comment oop. But yeah same diff either way tbh.
Pantera_Nehgrow100k 1 points 1y ago
I was referring to the post when he said they close @ 10:00pm

Ive been closing as a SSV for 2 years now. Thats absolutely not normal. It should only take 30 minutes after door lock to close up. Some days it can take 45 minutes or an hour depending on staffing and business, but after an hour I throw in the towel and say whats done is done, and write a long letter to the openers on why the close was rough. You should never have to stay 2 hours passed your closing time.
Nalin90 9 points 1y ago
Agreed. Partner for 5 years and SSV for 4. The only time it's every taken us that long to close was Thanksgiving before the pandemic cause we closed early and were constant all day so we couldn't do any closing tasks until after we closed. 30 minutes is the amount of time it can take though sometimes it can take 45 minutes if it's a bad night. And hour only if the day has been an utter shitshow.
chixonthefly [OP] 3 points 1y ago
From my understanding its two plus a ssv. It take long because we have a drive thru maybe? I asked again today and their very insistent on it bein 12pm. I’m worried because my last bus is 11pm
Alefur 10 points 1y ago
Even on a rough day in a drive thru/café w/two+ssv it only takes us at most 45m after close, staying 2 hours late should only happen on Cleanplay, it's definitely not normal.
Ricepaper97 7 points 1y ago
Theres a policy somewhere stating that it should only take 30 minutes, which is why we are scheduled only 30 minutes passed closing time. Unless its for cleanplay you should never be expected to stay that late.

For a little insight, my store only has ssv + 1 barista for the last 2-3 hours of us being open. The two of us still manage to get closing tasks done within a normal amount of time, it NEVER takes more than an hour at most.

This is kind of where I was thinking it was kind of crazy. I worked a full service restaurant and never had people past maybe a hour tops because at the end we were basically mashed potatoes tried to go home. I start in 40 min wish me luck will update later
FloridaUniversity 2 points 1y ago
I’ve had times because of staffing at a restaurant, that I was there very late into the night. I was the only one cleaning the bathrooms to HQ standards but only cause people didn’t do actually cleaning during the shifts the entire day.

The second I got in trouble for being on my phone because we were slow and I had a professor I needed to email.

I loaded up the single server with a full lunch room with the manager and gave my “two weeks” notice as I left.

They had to clean it to HQ standards that night too. 🤣

*not at Starbucks

Update: yes so basically with our drive thru we close at 10 we do not leave til 11:30-12am because we must prep and set up for the morning crew. Did I get my last bus ? No I had a nice co worker take me home because they didn’t want me to pay for a Uber. I was scheduled 2-10:30 and I’m out by 11:30. Their are still two people at my store setting up for morning crew. I’m restricting my availability now
Professional-Lie6004 1 points 1y ago
What all are y’all prepping for the morning crew?
Professional-Lie6004 2 points 1y ago
I would check the dcr and see what it says, for a clean play day getting out at 12am is normal. For a normal day it’s ridiculous and in most stores would get the ssv into so hot water. Even being at a high volume drive store is still shouldn’t take you more than an hour MAX. Cross check your schedule all with the dcr as well. With the store closing at 10pm you should be getting out around 10:30pm, 11pm at the latest if this isn’t happening have a conversation with your asm/ sm, approach the conversation as an opportunity for growth ie; how can I better support the time so that we can ensure everyone gets out on time? You can also ask them what time they would deem appropriate to do certain tasks such as clean the ovens, take down bar, and things of that nature.

Yea it seems like they aren’t doing closing tasks until after closing. My store starts around 4 or 5pm and we close at 9 but leave at 9:30.
aspiringgrandpa 4 points 1y ago
i don’t think so. i usually open but the few times i’ve closed the latest we got out after we closed the store was about an hour. you should go over like, 30 minutes from your scheduled off hours bc that’s bs!
Affectionate_Book_82 3 points 1y ago
Not normal I get out at 10:02 when we close at 10
drinkliquidclocks 2 points 1y ago
Oh baby no
lilkiosk 2 points 1y ago
Former closer, we leave 30 minutes after close. Sometimes 15 minutes after close. On bad days 35 minutes after close. 2 hours after close is not normal.
nicolelynnejones 2 points 1y ago
Ummmm that’s absolutely not normal. A good close should take an hour maximum but honestly even half an hour covers everything if you start a bit before close / are slow
overturned23 2 points 1y ago
I would not be staying past 11. 12 am is absurd
Alternative-Rent5653 2 points 1y ago
judging from how my store operates, closers usually stay about a 20-45 minutes from closing schedule (we close at 8 but are planning on extending hours soon) and that even includes clean play so unless your store is huge and needs to deep clean every night or something along those lines, then definitely it is not normal to stay so late if you close at the specific time
oftbkk 2 points 1y ago
nope. it should only take 30 minutes to close. pre closing is your best friend
georgecarlinsneice 2 points 1y ago
No. That’s not normal. I’ve only had one store I worked at close like this, and every night I was breaking the law as a minor by staying after ten and driving after eleven.
Odd-Seaworthiness544 1 points 1y ago
If your store was staffed properly, it shouldn't be that late. I don't know why they have to stress out barista's so much. Like give proper staffing so workers can get out at a reasonable hour. Instead of trying to preclose, do drive thru bar and POS/warming at the same time. It can not be done. But yet think we should be able to manage while staying calm.
Better_Dust_2364 1 points 1y ago
I work at a target location. We are half the size but only have 2 people max for closing. If someone calls out it’s just you solo. The latest I’ve ever gotten out is 11:30 on a deep clean night when I’m by myself. (1am for a launch but that’s a different ball game lol) idk what’s happening but something not adding up time wise. y’all need to be doing prep and pre cleaning before you close.
Swordxxxx 1 points 1y ago
I have closed 5 times a week every week for the past 3 years. The longest it’s taken from the minute we closed to the minute we leave, has been 45 minutes. That was only once. Usually it is exactly 30 minutes
Jaded_Fun_7133 1 points 1y ago
Only for clean play would that make sense
peepeepoopaccount 1 points 1y ago
Bruh my store closes at like 8 and I thought my Starbucks stayed open pretty late…. The others in town close at like 4 or 5
theimposteramongus 1 points 1y ago
My shift and i always get out at our exact time to leave
We’re a slower store but its still only two people for two hours before close and we get out on time
