Hello! I was a shift supervisor at a cafe Starbucks. When I was hired in, we had an amazing manager who went above and beyond for all of us. I loved working at Starbucks because of the environment she created. Sadly, she had to leave our store and our new manager was the complete opposite. Just before she arrived I was promoted moving from being an opening barista to closing shift. Learning the new day part and everything that comes with being a shift was difficult to say the least especially because I also received brand new baristas to close with me who weren’t trained properly. As time went on, we got more comfortable but in that time, an opening shift and I (she used to be my roommate) had a falling out. She started talking bad about me and my friends to our manager and partners as well as purposefully not doing what she needed to do to prep us for the evening when she knew I’d be closing. When I brought this up to my manager, she said I didn’t understand what it was like to open and then went and told other shifts about our private meeting. I of course reported this as I didn’t feel comfortable in my store anymore. When she found out I did this, my manager searched for a reason to fire me and found one. I was taught although we are supposed to close cash after close, it was okay to close down cash early as long as we were dead so on rough nights I would do this. She picked out 4 days in which I closed cash early and separated me from the company. When I asked why I did not receive a warning before the separation, they stated they did not catch it until there were too many offenses to allow me to continue working. Seeing as I reported my manager 5/23 and they supposedly “found” this violation 5/25, it feels like retaliation. This whole situation screwed up so many things for me. I can’t afford school so I was attending ASU. Now I lose out on all of that and have to decide a completely new career path now. I also can now no longer afford to live in my current apartment. The way Starbucks allowed this is disgusting.
