Having a speech impediment & working in customer service is annoying. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by destineenicole-
I just started working at Starbucks this week. I’ve had a speech impediment my whole life, it’s gotten a lot better than what it used to be but it’s still there occasionally. I honestly just ignore it and continue on with whatever I’m saying when it acts up, but it does act up more when I’m anxious or nervous (which I have been since starting this job). Whenever I struggle to get a word out in front of a customer or co-worker, it feels like they’re looking at me like I have three heads.

It’s just really annoying having a speech impediment and working in customer service. I wish I could just talk normal like other people a lot and not get weird looks. Really just wanted to get this off my chest and needed to vent.

It’s like you took the words right out of my mouth. I feel this. I’ve lived with a speech impediment my whole life. I’ve been working at SB for just over 8 months, and I find myself taking orders (Drive-Thru Order Take and POS) the vast majority of my time on shift, and I know how embarrassing it can be when your speech impediment acts up. I am very lucky to have fellow Partners, Shift-Runners, and a Manager who are all very understanding and they are all willing to stick up for me if a customer starts getting mad at me for it. I know unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as me.

But if you ever need to talk about issues with your speech impediment, just shoot me a dm. I’m here if you need.

i’m sorry:( If you’re comfortable try talking to them about it. I had a coworker like that before and i would just sit and listen until she finished her sentence. Some people are just impatient and it sucks. Don’t feel down on yourself. You’re trying your best and people need to see that

I have a mild stutter and it’s the absolute worst when people will make fun of it thinking it’s a one time thing. Like no, I have a speech impediment, please stop being an ableist dick and let me finish my sentence. It’s super hard having a major insecurity on full display especially in a customer service environment because they simply don’t see you as a person

I feel you on this. I have a lisp (one that I have found out, after years of speech therapy of course, is due to the structure of my teeth that would take surgery to fix) and it was rough in the military, and it's rough as a Barista/Shift. There will always be small moments that remind you that you have a speech impediment, or larger moments when customers get frustrated because they can't quite understand something, but we got this.

I have a high pallet which I found out due to having to wear dentures and it cured my lisp. I've been reading about it and apparently you can get clip ons like dentures but without the teeth that sit on the roof of your mouth. I just wish id known this many years ago! Apparently you need to be referred to the hospital to get it.
