when you’re brand new the anxiety runs SOOO high, I felt this when I first started!! I was so lost and honestly almost wanted to quit thinking the job wasn’t for me, but now that I’ve got some experience in and getting familiar with the drinks and items it honestly is a lot of fun albeit hellish when the orders just don’t stop coming 😭
Good luck!!! Remember to breathe, I felt the exact same way; I was only comfortable with making refreshers and stuff but now I’m throwing out 64827 fraps at a time. Don’t be too afraid when you make a mess, for me I can be clumsy and I feel. So bad when I drop stuff or make a mess! it’s part of the job and your coworkers should be understanding!! If anything, there’s some resources others have posted if you need some study material! 💚

Its normal to be stressed a little especially after ur first week! But do not get in ur own head. I used to do that all the time and then I started to realize that of course I'm not going to get it quickly with all the tasks that have to be done on CS and all the different types of drinks and customisations and modifications that have to be rung in on the register and all the recipes of drinks that you have to learn especially with the amount of drinks People Order per order...u cant beat urself up for not memorizing it all or being fast after ur first week. When I started it seems like a whole different language to me but people kept telling me that it would become muscle memory and eventually it did and I realized but I was worrying for no reason. Especially with the small amount of training time that you said you've had with your trainer and on bar, you should totally not be down on yourself about it or doubting yourself. The most important thing is that you got through it which means you're super strong for that💜🙂

I just started 3 months ago and I felt so anxious and overwhelmed my first month. But the team I work with is amazing and accepted me. I was so stressed about remembering shot amounts and syrup pumps because it felt like I would never remember all of it. Now I’m already on all bars and I love it! I would study the amounts on the register whenever I would ring someone up. We’ve had a lot of call outs at our store and it’s enabled me to be put on bar a lot more than I think is normal but it really pushed me out of all that anxiety. My trainer also explained to me that it took him 9 months to become a strong barista so definitely don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t great right away. Also just ask questions. If you don’t know something someone around you does and they won’t get mad if you ask. You’re always learning.

This is absolutely normal and there is no shame in it. The best thing to do is keep asking questions and observe how other people do it. The ideal place to be eventually is to match comfort with pace. Focus on comfort first, then you will naturally get quicker.
For larger orders, I get overwhelmed too. What works for me is to acknowledge how I feel for half of a second, then realize that it’s better to focus on what would be the most efficient way to fulfill the order. Food is about timing things right and figuring out what’s priority and what’s not. For bar, it’s similar. Most of the time, I think, “What can I do while I’m waiting on these shots of espresso to pull?” It really helps to just keep going. These are things you will develop over time and it is not expected of you to get immediately. It took me almost three years to get good at my job because I’m a very meticulous learner.
