“What’s sugar-free? I’m diabetic.” (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by theroyaleyeball
To begin, I’m not dissing everyone who has diabetes and goes to Starbucks. My issue is people who roll up to the box and expect me to be able to provide what I feel amounts to medical knowledge.

I’m a barista. I don’t know what is sugar-free, or keto, or paleo. (Not trying to compare diabetes to dieting, obviously, but just because there are limits to what you can eat.) It’s really frustrating how customers expect me to have nutrition facts like that already off the top of my head.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel bad, but I also really don’t want to be put in a position where I don’t know the answer and I might accidentally say something that makes someone sick.

Whenever someone asks about dietary restrictions, allergies, etc., I always let them know that I can’t guarantee that cross contamination won’t occur.

Whenever a customer asks for anything keto, I let them know that we don’t have any official keto items on the menu so I can’t recommend anything, but that customers share their keto creations online and they’re more than welcome to give me a recipe that they find. And then I reiterate the fact that I can’t guarantee that it’s actually keto though lol.

Most customers are really cool about it so if you haven’t tried that approach, maybe it’ll be helpful :)

That’s a really good idea. I feel bad for customers who genuinely are lost with our ridiculous menu and don’t understand how much sugar our products have, truly. I’m just afraid of being put in a bad position :( but I like your approach and may give it a shot!

To go along with that, I always suggest downloading the app as well because they can find all the nutritional facts for each drink there. It’s up to them to do their research for their own needs, if they don’t care to do it themselves that’s their problem not yours.

Fun fact: the sweetener they use in the Sugar Free Vanilla is actually not Keto or Diabetic friendly as it causes your blood sugar to spike in the same way that normal sugar does.

Interesting. Do you know what it is called?

It’s the Maltodextrin!

“The glycemic index (GI) in maltodextrin is higher than in table sugar. This means that the powder can cause a spike in your blood sugar shortly after eating foods that have it. A sudden increase in blood glucose in people with insulin resistance or diabetes can be fatal.”

$1

“The high GI of maltodextrin means it can cause spikes in your blood sugar level, especially if it’s consumed in large amounts. Because of this, you may want to avoid or limit it if you have diabetes or insulin resistance.”

that's false, my diabetic friend drinks that stuff regularly because it doesn't...

It’s the Maltodextrin. Your diabetic friend may not be aware of the fact that maltodextrin causes blood sugar spikes, but it does.

as far as my knowledge is, the SGF vanilla is the only sugar free thing we have and anything else that follows a certain diet (keto, paleo, etc.) I come out and say I have no clue because we don't have any dietary specific drinks.
