Shift not supportive at all!! Rant. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Bulletrayflower
So last week, I called my district manager on my shift and I’m not sure if she’s retaliating on me by making me do extra work.
So this week I am training a new hire, Today is day three, everything is starting off great we finish espresso bar and we’re about to take our break, I’m doing my own breaks since I’m nomcoveage. As I’m taking my apron off my shift comes running quickly to me to ask me to take the trash out and I really don’t want to because I’m training and it’s time for my lunch, there’s a full shift of partners available, and I’m trying to stick to my training plan!!
I say sure and then before we could to go trash she comes back and asks, “actually can you guys just stay on cafe bar until peak is over in 30 minutes.” Ummm it’s fucking Saturday it’s slow as fuck, we were suppose to have our lunch at 9:45. After we stayed another 30 minutes!!! We finally take our lunch and as I’m going to the register to get a bagel to eat (AFTER IM CLOCKED OUT) my shift asks me, “when you come back from your 30 you guys will take the trash out.”

I replied, “I don’t think I should as I’m non-coverage and I’m trying to stick to my training schedule, she has modules to do.”

My shift replies, “it’s still apart of your training.”

Me: “no it’s not I’ve already done customer support.”

Shift: “As she’s doing her modules, you’ll take the trash out.”

Me: “I literally don’t mind helping at all when Im on the floor with my trainee but when she’s doing her modules I’m non coverage! It’s not fair”

And then she starts arguing with me and I finally just say okay.

Im so annoyeddd and ughhhh I’m
Telling my manager when I see her but dude She makes me want to put my two weeks in, she always like this toward me, making me always go the extra mile.

God I'm so sorry that happened. You're right, if there's already a shift full of people, she should not be handing you tasks while you're training.

Sometimes at my store, when a trainee is doing their modules, the trainer will still come out and help but that's typically because we are short staffed or out of the good will of the trainer because they genuinely want to help. We all know that training should not be interrupted.

It sounds to me like she is trying to be your back-seat-trainer and is on some kind of weird ass power trip. The fact that she did this to you right as you had clocked out for your lunch and that this seems like it's a recurring thing is definitely worth letting your dm and sm know. If they don't do anything about it and things escalate, definitely contact Ethics.

It doesn't sound like it's retaliation right now but that's just from what you outlined in this. If there's anything lending credit to it being retaliation (past history of conflict at and outside of work, issues regarding backtalk and blatant disrespect, hate speech used against you, physical violence, etc.) then it would absolutely fall under that category. Totally get what you'd leave that out here though to keep things somewhat anonymous. Hopefully whatever happens works out in your favor!
