anyone else’s store charging for cups of water/ice? also customers have to ask for straws, forks, etc. we’re not allowed to offer them even for fraps (self.starbucksbaristas)

my store is charging $1 for water/ice cups. people are not happy about it and once again it’s on us baristas to deal with increasingly angry customers.

I’m assuming you’re in CA. We can’t offer any straws or cutlery here. It makes me feel so stupid. “Here’s your yogurt-have fun trying to lick it out of the cup because I can’t give you a spoon if you don’t ask for it.” And not automatically handing out straws with a Frappuccino makes me feel so inept too! I tried to talk my boss into a grace period where we give it to them for these next couple weeks but inform them that going forward, they’ll need to ask. But, my boss didn’t go for my idea.

yep CA… we have signs up about the straws and put announcement stickers on drinks for the last couple weeks to prepare people but it’s still so ridiculous. i feel stupid too and the customers are so angry with us as if we’re the ones coming up with the rules

We began telling them weeks ago to prepare them for the sudden change as for the waters I'd never heard about that... might be a local thing but it's not a sbux thing. If someone comes to inspect your location to see you guys are following the law and you're not I assume you guys will get some sort of fine for it. But I don't think sbux will have any repercussions for it since it's a habit thats hard to break.

Yeah, my store put up the 3 x 5 sign with the smallest words at the handoff plane. Like, ok? People don’t read signs! How are they going to see this? I think it’s best practices to verbally explain to people for a break in period what is happening. Where do the legislators even get these ideas? I can understand not giving cutlery out for everything, but you need a straw to drink a Frappuccino.

Anything with a dome lid needs a straw, it's awkward handing put a drink with whipped cream and no straw when you obviously know they'll need one and ask for one anyway.

i haven’t had much trouble with the whole no straw or utensils thing bc i just go “anything else i can grab for you?” and wait until they ask for a straw lol. im so sorry if you’ve been berated already :( maybe suggest adding a sign at the DT window if you don’t have one?

Wait… so cups of water/ice are $1?

F that noise. I will never do this. Yeah I’ll make someone pay for the ethos water, duh. But I am not going to charge the homeless or any other customer for water.

We supposed to be the “third place”

also i couldn’t care less about being a “third place” for customers. how about we focus on creating a decent workplace for our partners first

I agree with you.

they’re charging for the plastic cups not the water and it’s not optional. personally i’m ok with the charge since single use plastic is out of control. my issue is we’re the only store around us doing it and starbucks expects us to enforce all of these changes with minimal support and when rules aren’t consistent across the board. we have a high unhoused population here and they come in with big gulp cups or water bottles that we fill with water/ice for free. the complaints have been from people who order excessive amounts of water/ice and are angry that other stores didn’t charge

Texas Barista here! No…. I have no heard of that, and it hasn’t been ringing up as such. Usually I don’t even ring it up because it just waste stickers and I get them when I’m on POS
BelligerentCoroner 6 points 1y ago
I don't ring up waters that are on the fly, but definitely ring them up if a customer orders them with the rest of their order! The system tracks the inventory for cups and lids, and it helps so that people doing the order can order the right number of cups!

apparently it’s only CA stores that have a water tap in the cafe. best part is none of the stores around us have a cafe tap therefore we’re the only store charging for the cups 🙃

Im in Ventura county and we haven’t charged for water cups. I hate not giving out straws and cutlery though!! I hate looking stupid.
echowolf9 2 points 1y ago
Where are you in California. Some cities in California require you to charge for one time use cups, and it doesn’t matter if there’s a water tap. Starbucks also sent an email to California residents that starting June 1st they’d have to ask for straws.
