I’m not a Starbucks barista, but I want to be. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lycvnthropy
I’m currently a barista at a small local shop where management has only really *managed* to chase off good workers and hire in relatives of theirs who flake on their shifts often, which no real repercussions. Recently, one of the girls came and told me that our main manager had been complaining about my health issues and stated plans to fire me soon once she gets enough trained staff to do so.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about working at Starbucks, but I’ve also heard a lot of things about being mistreated and how bad the shortages were - or maybe still are? One ex Starbucks employee I know who only just left told me now is the worst time to apply because stores are attempting to unionize, but he’s also anti-union whereas I’m not really that educated on the matter so it doesn’t really sway me?

I know summer tends to be a chaotic time everywhere with new hires, but I have previous experience both at my current shop and at Tim Hortons’s - although my current place doesn’t have drive thru so it’s been a while since I’ve handled a headset. Would it be worth applying right now, even with potential shortages, the summer rush and attempts at unionization?

Starbucks is one of the better retail establishments to work for. Baristas generally only get 20-25 hours a week and will be making 15 dollars an hour floor wage starting August 1st also depending on your state. That being said, it is a fast paced job, we have high burnout, consistent short staffing and corporate has a lack of understanding about the average workers financial needs. These resulted in the union push. I encourage you to do your own research on unions but it is a fact that union workers have better benefits and wages than non union workers. I have felt more support from Workers United than I have felt from any store manager or district manager I have ever met. However even with the downsides if you want to move up with Starbucks it is worth it financially. Or even if you just want an okay paying part time job with okay benefits! The people you work with generally make the job worth it for a little while.

Don’t hesitate to apply! In honesty it may be a little more hectic since summer is starting so there will be a lot more people but if you already have experience as a barista that makes you all the more better. Also your manager sucks and if you live in an at will work state I would apply and once you get the job just jump ship then and there if they are already planning to fire you. Best of luck!

My first day ever at Tim’s was Black Friday 2019, so I feel like aside from being rusty at headset I should survive!

She just completely removed me from next weeks schedule so we can “rethink my position” because she’s tired of waiting for my chronic illness (that she was told about in my initial interview) to just… disappear? I’m sending my application in today, so thanks for the luck!
