Got told to “slow down with marking out drinks”(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by What1sgr3y
I mark out 2 drinks per shift, one for my 15 and another for my 30. I used to do more but cut back on my caffeine cuz i felt crazy without it. I work 5 days a week so a total of 10 drinks a week. Isn’t starbucks whole thing unlimited drinks during your shift??? I think i’m the only one getting in trouble but i’m also the only one who marks my drinks out.
esaeklsg196 points1y ago
Is someone else using your numbers? I’d ask the SM for how much it thinks you’re marking out, if they didn’t tell you.
ProgrammerGeneral14911 points1y ago
You can check on the POS via custom reports and clicking partner markout, you can even print out a receipt. Idk if drinks can be regulated per-say but for waste reasons our DM and SM have made it a rule that for 10 min breaks grande and smaller and whatever size for 30 min breaks due to partner waste ie ordering a trenta and throwing pretty much all of it away etc. but you should be fine as policy indicates 30 min before, after, and every break so if anything call partner resources as they will guide you the best policy wise if you don’t feel comfy challenging your DM and SM
violaaesthetic172 points1y ago
That is complete bullshit even the strictest standards say you’re entitled to one before, one during, and one after your shift. Theoretically you should be entitled one per break you take and one 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after
Merced_x11 points1y ago
This.
violaaesthetic35 points1y ago
And to echo some other people in this thread already: THAT'S NOT EVEN THAT MANY DRINKS! 10/week?? that's absolutely absurd ask your SM who in the world is auditing them on that if they're cracking down on 10/week for goodness's sake!!
amalia13lightning9 points1y ago
and they dont even have rules about how many you can have. the only time corporate pays attention is if there's not enough markouts- people aren't marking out. or an insane amount of markouts- possibly that partner is using their numbers outside of their shifts, or sharing it with other people. if you're drinking them all yourself on your shifts you could mark out 100.
moldyhotpocket79 points1y ago
crazy how we push out hundreds of drinks a shift that each cost about half of our hourly wage yet they get mad at us for marking out “too many drinks”? i will make and take as many drinks as i want i do not care.
Loose_Bumblebee14 points1y ago
you’re so right. and half the time people want remakes bc they are so petty and picky and aren’t specific when they order
aspiringgrandpa13 points1y ago
literally if i can remake someone half drank frappuccino to “make the moment right” then why can’t i make my moment right by getting a drink i’ll actually finish and enjoy 🫣
cookiemonstah874 points1y ago
And then there's how many customer drinks get dumped down the drain because they were made wrong and no one bats an eye. Unless someone consistently makes too many wrong, of course.
felinefireghost50 points1y ago
You get 15’s?! We only get 10’s :(
idk_why100018 points1y ago
We get 15s in Canada

Playful_Sector11 points1y ago
We get 10s at my store, but the time doesn't start until we've got our food and drink, so it kinda evens out I guess. Also, we get 2 of them for 7-hour shifts, and idk if that's a thing with 15s stores
kpopapi9 points1y ago
Wow you’re lucky. Ours start as soon as they let us go regardless of how long it takes to get food/drink. They even make a point of saying “see you at [whatever time is 10 mins later]”. I usually just get a water myself bc of this.
cookiemonstah873 points1y ago
Break times vary by state/country laws, not company policy. Some states say you must take a lunch break by the 5 hour mark. Period. If you don't clock out by then, you're working off the clock. Some states don't even require giving lunch breaks. Shorter breaks are even more all over the place. Some are paid, some aren't, some are longer than others, some are required by the 4 hour mark, some by 5, or 6, some don't care when it happens so long as it happens, some let you opt out (which can be a problem if employees don't know their rights and the companies claim no one ever takes their breaks), some require them to not happen within an hour of a shift starting or ending...
Most companies that operate in multiple states will standardize it to an extent, but will still try to get as much work out of people for as little reward as possible.
Detantevandaisy1 points1y ago
We get 2x 5’s 😭🤣 and only if there is time for it, but sometimes the ssv forgets and then you only have 30
3aTroop-1 points1y ago
Maybe they are a minor
ryannmm59 points1y ago
i’m a minor & i only get 10’s
3aTroop1 points1y ago
Maybe it’s a state by state thing.
Playful_Sector1 points1y ago
Nah, it's set by your SM. I've had partners over from another store in my district use 15s when we use 10s
Minute-General-2090-15 points1y ago
it'd depends, if you work more than 4 hours it's 15's but if it's 4 hours, you only get 10's. That was what I was told
fuwaldah13 points1y ago
This is not a Starbucks standard.
Minute-General-20902 points1y ago
I work at a license stores which I didn't mention but it could be different for us than corporate locations
taylortherod5 points1y ago
Licensed store break schedules are based on the rules of the store they’re in
felinefireghost4 points1y ago
Nah in Cali, at least LA county it’s 10 minute breaks and 30 minute lunches past 5 hours. Unfortunately. 10 minutes is very little time to do anything:(
hoewenn1 points1y ago
Wasn’t like that for me, I worked 6-7 hours and would only get 10s.
nonogender1 points1y ago
no halfs? are you in the US? which state are you in if so? i thought most states required 30 min breaks if you work 5+ hours
hoewenn2 points1y ago
Oh my bad I said that wrong, we got 30s. I meant we didn’t get 15s like the other person said, we got 10s.
bouncyal1 points1y ago
now i’m confused about my states regulations because i work a lot of 5 hour and 45 min shifts but only get one 10 :/ i live in oregon
Mea-fae_Owl7322 points1y ago
It isn’t stated as unlimited nor does it stipulate a specific number. Here’s what it says…
Perks for Partners Free Food Item and Beverages While Working A store partner may consume—free of charge—one food item and any coffee, tea or blended beverages while on break during the partner’s scheduled shift or during the 30 minutes prior to or after the partner’s scheduled shift. The food benefit of one item per shift includes bakery, breakfast sandwiches, oatmeal and lunch items such as bistro boxes, salads and sandwiches. The store partner food and beverage benefit is available at the store in which the partner is working for the partner’s personal consumption only; partners may not give away their partner food items or beverages to any other individuals. A partner may not receive more than one free beverage at a time, and may not order multiple free beverages after the shift ends. The partner beverage may not be consumed while the partner is actually working, but only while on a rest or meal break. Additionally, partners are required to wait in line with other customers to receive their partner food items or beverages, and another partner should ring out each partner’s item(s).” I think it’s BS that your are being told you are marking out too much. I’d definitely go with the suggestion another commenter made and check how many the SM is saying you are doing.
gingergal-n-dog5 points1y ago
The food markouts have changed slightly since this was written.
Mea-fae_Owl732 points1y ago
It has and it’s still hard for me to remember to get my off day mark out before I leave for the day. I’m getting better with it as if I’m hungry on my last 10 I can get another food item.
aspiringgrandpa16 points1y ago
lmaooo i be taking home like 4-5 drinks (mostly the tea bc it gets wasted anyway) and nobody has said anything yet 🤐
Stella_202013 points1y ago
I’ve seen partners get fired over this. Be careful not worth it if you ask me.
aspiringgrandpa2 points1y ago
my manager hadn’t said anything and he’s the type who would so as long as the DM ain’t around i think i’m good 🫢
persona-27 points1y ago
As long as there is never another reason why they want to get rid of you. They know this is happening. There are witnesses and a trail. They ever decide they don’t like you anymore and this is the reason they will state for letting you go.
Stella_20202 points1y ago
The couple times I saw it happen was more so because they were investigating camera footage for other reasons and for other people all together … missing money, or guest incident and the footage got sent directly to the DM. I’m a manager and I let a lot slide but I tell all my baristas they are grown people and I’m fine with a lot but at the end of the day I follow orders from above so it’s at there own risk.
aspiringgrandpa2 points1y ago
perfectly agree! i know i shouldn’t be taking hella drinks…but if i get fired i’m not gonna get mad bc i accept those consequences when “breaking the rules” lol
empty-coffeemug5 points1y ago
When I was a closer my asm was the sweetest and used to let us take home any of the iced teas or iced coffees as long as we were closed and were about to dump them. I was super fortunate with that. But yeah be careful I haven’t seen anyone fired for this but I’ve seen people get written up
Tallgothwife4 points1y ago
My SM encourages people to take home left over tea/ice coffee/cold brew/expiring chai etc if youre closing. Like she will get on you for not taking stuff home, she takes the whole “free drinks” thing seriously to improve store morale. We throw out so much stuff between customers and wrong pull orders that she wants someone to consume it instead of tossing out 15-20 things a night.
skrilllexi14 points1y ago
I was told you get one drink 30 minutes before your shift, 30 minutes after, 1 bag of the coffee beans per week, and 7 breakfast sandwich stuff a week (my first day today lol)
astivana10 points1y ago
It’s seven food items, so that includes most RTD&E, not just breakfast food!
persona-21 points1y ago
And the juices. I just learned they work as a food markout.
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
The energy drinks don't, though. Learned that one the hard way. I paid for one and didn't even like it...
jazzysoranio12 points1y ago
That’s not even a lot of drinks.
burntsriracha6 points1y ago
im not sure how much they let us do anymore, but i know about a month ago in the weekly update they said you can look up all of your mark outs on the pos, you just have to be assigned to the till
caseyfasey5 points1y ago
I literally make as many quad flat whites as I can drink per shift. My highest was five during one shift. My fellow partners have a joke of how many shots I've consumed during the day(because I can't drink anything without a quad in it lol).
No one has ever said anything. And if they do, I'll laugh as I sip my delicious beverage.
cookiemonstah873 points1y ago
My go-to is a quad caramel macchiatto. Iced or hot, depends on whether I'm hot or cold that day. But also same. My partners would always joke about whether I'd taken my Adderall on any given day based on how many shots they'd seen me drink. Lol
My store also had a spot in the back where we could put our drinks during a shift and go take a sip if we weren't slammed, or if we had any other reason to go back there. Pretty sure that wasn't supposed to be allowed, but even the SM did it.
They also allowed us to make drinks for ourselves any time we weren't busy, not just on breaks. This was especially helpful for openers who can't make themselves a drink before a shift!
caseyfasey2 points1y ago
We also have a drink for our drinks and we all go sip them throughout the day. I am located in Tennessee, and my store gets RIDICULOUSLY hot to the point that I have developed heat exhaustion while working. 10/10 wouldn't recommend.
I looked into it after, there are no OSHA laws that say they need a working AC, as ours is faulty and has been for years. We were just renovated and I was like, this is it. It'll be fixed. I almost cried when I walked into our brand new store and it was hot AF. Stale air. Bfiszndudsosnrhdis
BUT. We must be allowed to drink water. And it isn't my fault my coffee is also next to my water. Drink water, sip coffee. 🙏
Wonderful_Nightmare4 points1y ago
Just make em and don't even bother marking them out. That's what I do.
eatpraymemes4 points1y ago
Wait y’all actually mark out your drinks?
Tallgothwife1 points1y ago
I havent marked out food or drink in months, they wont miss the 1$ they paid for my large chai and charge 6$ for.
eatpraymemes0 points1y ago
Maybe I’d care more if I got paid more than $18 an hour
Tallgothwife1 points1y ago
Youre getting paid?😂 jk but everyone in my store is getting paid $15(min wage) Wish I made that much, maybe Id be able to buy food that isnt $1 pasta. Some fruit would be nice🙃
eatpraymemes1 points1y ago
I’m a shift so that’s why, I think the baristas make like $14 in my state
jams10153 points1y ago
There's not a hard limit re: # of drinks. There's just regulations around how many drinks at a time, when you can drink it and who may drink it.
NewsLife_2473 points1y ago
My store doesn’t care and we will try and makeup drinks to try new recipes.
mxs42352 points1y ago
Technically it’s as many drinks as you can CONSUME. Soooo y’know.
Sometimes I’ll start my 30 with lemonade then decide I want caffeine and get something else afterwards.
daniiiteee2 points1y ago
I got reprimanded once because I was only marking out one or two drinks a week. They thought I just wasn’t marking them out and didn’t believe me when I said I mostly drink water. :-)
aee782 points1y ago
Meanwhile, my SM is on us for not marking out our drink and making sure everyone is. Almost everyone in my store gets at least 2 drinks a shift.
tantelope2 points1y ago
Um… I thought we could only have 1 free drink per shift. 😭😭😭😭
verdeuce5 points1y ago
Oh you sweet summer child
I_atethecat2 points1y ago
you get 3 drinks per shift. 7 food items per week and only used on days you work.
CoffeeChesirecat1 points1y ago
Idk why you got down voted. This is the policy in the US. I understand OP is Canadian, but you did state the correct policy for those of us in the States.
I_atethecat1 points1y ago
yeah idk man lol

I typically had like 4 or 5 drinks per shift! Mind you I only ever didn't finish one and had to dump it if it got too busy for me to duck into the back to take a sip and the drink sat too long (like several hours) and was no longer even remotely palatable. Maybe one every 3 or 4 shifts got partially tossed. But I don't think they're supposed to limit that beyond not marking out more than one in... I think it's 30 minutes? It's a partner benefit. They don't stipulate what you can or can't do with the drinks after you mark them out. If you feel the need to make yourself a trenta refresher and immediately dump it down the drain every morning, that's your prerogative!
happybowlita831 points1y ago
I mark out 4 in a day at times wth 😂 Edit to add: the rule used to be 6 drink mark outs per day in the US a few years ago when I first got hired on. It was meant to be 1 before your shift and if you worked a full 8hrs then #2 for your 1st 10, #3 for your lunch, #4 for your 2nd 10 and #5 for the end of your shift and I guess an extra just in case you needed it. I believe the policy now doesn't state a specific limitation on quantity, only limitation now is you can only have 1 marked out drink at a time so if you haven't finished your drink you cant go and mark out another one on your way home. But some SMs might still let you as long as you marked out 1 during your shift and the other one at the end of your shift.
FluidCandy5321 points1y ago
Basically you get 5 free drinks in an 8 hour shift
