people who stare at baristas while they’re making your drink… (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bouncyal
you are the worst type of people
peepeepoopaccount 103 points 1y ago
There is an older guy who ALWAYS stands near the warming station, like right where the opening is, and watches us make his food so that he can get it as soon as we’re done cooking it…. I hate it to much it’s so uncomfortable. The first time he did it with me was while I was training and I was like??? Does he need something??? And my trainer just said that he always does that to everyone
Exhausted_mama93 95 points 1y ago
I would stop handing it to him at that end. Walk that happy little sandwich down to the handoff plane and if he complains tell him you’re just doing your job 🤷🏻‍♀️
peepeepoopaccount 47 points 1y ago
I wish I could but yk SM’s are suck ups and would get mad if I did that since he’s a “regular” (cause ig spending a bunch of money at SBUX makes you entitled to special treatment)
BatWeary 28 points 1y ago
my favorite thing about my SM is that she’s anti-babying customers. she would actually encourage us to walk it all the way to the proper hand off plane, and say “if he wants his sandwich that bad he can walk his happy ass over” Lmao
Intelligent-Hunt-906 6 points 1y ago
literally 2 main people who watch me make their coffee (“to much cream! not enough! the other baristas usually!” LIKE NO IDCCCC IS THEY MAKING IT RN OR ME!??? ☠️🤣 or if cafe is busy they’ll walk over to drive bar and ask them to make it like no you gotta wait too
blackcatcaptions 39 points 1y ago
Fart. Loudly
aliceinimagineland 85 points 1y ago
They’re weird af for staring, and I’ve started asking them if I can help with anything when they do it. Like highlight to them how fucking weird they’re being. They always back off / look away
bouncyal [OP] 30 points 1y ago
honestly i always think about doing that and i really need to start lol
Responsible_Snow7109 24 points 1y ago
Me too lol cuz whenever i spill something or fumble when trying to grab a cup or something splashes in my eyes, theyre right there staring at me. Its weird as f. Like can i help u with something????? 👁️👃👁️
catarinavanilla 3 points 1y ago
Do it, it’s exhilarating
chakrasandwich 3 points 1y ago
Yes this I started to do this it works. if people make you feel uncomfortable speak up it’s your right, fuck customer service
iindiieecindiee 64 points 1y ago
It’s so uncomfortable. Those customers are right up there with the customers who just pick up any random drink and say “is this mine!?” When it clearly isn’t. Then they get upset because you someone made them grab the wrong drink. Sometimes I think Starbucks customers are the most rude, disrespectful dumbasses that I’ve ever witnessed/ served.
XepherX 10 points 1y ago
I honestly just stare because it's mesmerizing watching y'all do your craft 😭😭
sarahqueenoftots 4 points 1y ago
Personally, I have no problem with this. It’s always tricky when guessing others intentions but I only mind staring customers when it feels like they’re being hostile/annoyed/ Judgmental or somehow negative.
Whang 59 points 1y ago
For me, it's the intent behind the staring and it's always obvious. Are they staring because they legitimately find what we're doing fascinating or to just be a handoff barista?

I have zero problems with a kid watching me make their hot chocolate because they're excited for it. I have many problems with Karen watching me make her ventay, non-fat, no foam, 190°, curmel macarena with extra extra extra curmel jizzle because she's making sure I scoop out every bit of foam including crema.
ryguy69666 6 points 1y ago
Not the curmel Macarena w jizzle
dayahorne 49 points 1y ago
Customer: oh no no no. I always get extra caramel on mine.

Me, not looking up: its not yours Tracey.

My favorite:

Lady storms up to me while I'm making drinks, with a drink in her hand that she's been drinking out of and says "is this coffee? It's not supposed to be coffee!"

I take the cup and read the name. "This is a mobile order for Stephanie. Are you Stephanie?"

Another woman waiting in the cafe says, "Oh that's mine."

For some reason the first lady didn't have too much to say after that.
bouncyal [OP] 4 points 1y ago
oh my god i’ve had something similar like this happen. almost the same exact thing. it was SUPER busy so i was already pissed off. afterwards, i was so mad that i was like, “now i have to remake this, thanks. i’ll get your drink out after” it’s honestly probably the rudest i’ve been to a customer which isn’t even that rude 😂
RubySapphireSage 2 points 1y ago
What I find rude is they ask “who drink it is” when the drink clearly says seliene not a middle age old man name david and clearly knows it’s not his but feigns ignorant . So annoying .
Environmental_Tea297 1 points 1y ago
THIS
Realistic_Ad_3352 48 points 1y ago
i just simply say hi really loud and ask their name and if it’s the drink i’m making, i say don’t worry (name), your drink is right here it’s not going anywhere! thank you so much for all your patience 😀
tinydesthique 9 points 1y ago
the passive aggressiveness…..i LOVE it
Realistic_Ad_3352 4 points 1y ago
it makes me feel like we’re fuckin animals behind a cage that they can’t stop staring at so of course ima make u look dumb and in front of everyone lol
Afl4c 3 points 1y ago
omg using this
MaintenanceEasy744 18 points 1y ago
My favorite thing is when they stare at me on cafe bar and try to tell me what to do when I make “their drink” even though a large majority of the time it’s not. Smh
Edit: I take it back my FAVORITE is when they do this to me on drive bar and they ordered like a frap and are questioning me at the Espresso bar 😐
bouncyal [OP] 13 points 1y ago
i’ve had SO MANY people take a hot drink cup and be like “is this mine?” when they order a frap. it just shows how many people really don’t even know wtf they’re ordering
Garrickrelentless 15 points 1y ago
Making another customers' Caramel Ribbon Crunch: *puts whip on it*
Serena: "EXCUSE ME, THAT'S NO WHIP!"
Me: "Are you Chung Min? I'm sorry, I'll take the whip right off of this if you want!"
Be nice to them and in doing so make them look like the biggest asshole on the planet. That's the way.
jeonzelink 11 points 1y ago
I used to get anxiety when people did this to me. Now all i do is stare back at them in the eyes and it makes them so uncomfortable they’ll walk away because now they know what it feels like
Broad-Flounder-4971 8 points 1y ago
I know it isn’t malicious, but I had someone watch as I did mobiles and they were after live five drinks. They finally said “do you have x?” And I’m like yep you are after this next drink 🥲. Maybe I should ask their name and then tell them how many drinks are ahead. I know they are there and I could do theirs first, but it seems unfair to change the order of the drinks? Could be my autism.
uwumoment 10 points 1y ago
never do theirs first always do it in the order. no one deserves special treatment
Broad-Flounder-4971 5 points 1y ago
I do! I only bump them up if they are in the drive thru and I hate to do it because usually that means they ordered it and immediately got into the drive thru. Why not just order at the box my guy.
Lone_loser31 8 points 1y ago
Literally, we have a little glass compartment we keep over the counter for Covid safety and these mfs will literally stand on their tiptoes peeking in to see us make the drinks??? Creeps me tf out
jazzysoranio 7 points 1y ago
I keep asking “can I help you” every ten seconds.
vkapadia 6 points 1y ago
Like starting directly at you? Or watching you make drinks? Cause I do like seeing the drinks being made. Am I being annoying?
jeonzelink 20 points 1y ago
Id say it kinda gives us anxiety because we don’t know if you’re trying to rush us or not because you could be waiting for your drink when we’re making someone else’s. Therefore, it makes us uncomfortable.
bouncyal [OP] 6 points 1y ago
yeah i’d have to say this is why. it just makes us uncomfortable
ClementinesMonster 14 points 1y ago
Honestly, kinda yeah. I swear I can bar just fine but as soon as the staring and crowding starts I drop way more things, spill even more. Its very awkward and uncomfortable.
Kimmikkokat 5 points 1y ago
Talk with the barista. Have conversation while we make drinks and the staring will be less awkward. Ask us about our craft and you will be surprised how relaxed we will get when we know you are just curious vs being impatient.
Regular-Reveal8133 3 points 1y ago
i mean it’s a normal response and ur not mean for it but.. it is annoying .
vaudtime 2 points 1y ago
Same, I love watching drinks be made anywhere - it's fun
MrWisdom39 1 points 1y ago
No you’re fine it’s natural
official_koda_ 5 points 1y ago
I always say that customers be staring at their phones EVERYWHERE except Starbucks. Then they want to look anywhere but there phone. It’s especially weird when they’re with family or friends and are standing in a group and staring at baristas…rather than talking to each other
IzzyIllustrations 5 points 1y ago
Never forget the woman who came in every day and had 800 modifications for her lattes and would stare at us making it and yell at the new people who didn't know what she expected. She would purposefully make it hard on newbies just to have an excuse to yell at them over the bar. 🙄
legendoflaurel12 5 points 1y ago
I had someone do that to me today as I was filling up the shaker with water for a strawberry acai. The shaker slipped and fell into the sink and it splashed the refresher everywhere and directly on to the customer. I said, “you’re in the splash zone!” He took it really well actually, laughed and said I better stand back next time 😂
ayakowantsmemes 3 points 1y ago
Our sink and water tap is right by handoff so I say this a lot when people are hovering lol
Toomanyboringpeople 4 points 1y ago
Once had a lady watch me make her a medicine ball and she had something to say for every step. “Aren’t you supposed to double cup it?” “That’s enough water” “do another pump of honey” I finished making the drink and she reached her hand over the bar to take it and I walked it over the the handoff plane and put a sleeve on it and she couldn’t see and she goes “what happened?!?” And I was like “huh?” And she goes “what did you do to it?!?” And I was like “I put a sleeve on it” and then after she got her drink she got her double toasted cookie and ran over the the barista on register who was in the middle of speaking with another customer and just started yelling “It’s not even warm! It’s not even warm!” Over and over until the barista spoke over her and was like “I will toast it a third time” and took the cookie (yes I know not supposed to do that but she did it anyway) 😂 anyway- the woman was the worst.
RubySapphireSage 1 points 1y ago
It’s so embarrassing how people can act
Imtifflish24 4 points 1y ago
Our bar was purposely designed this way, and I HATE it!! How can I decaf crappy/entitled customers if they’re right there over my shoulder watching me??!!
Minute-General-2090 4 points 1y ago
it's very uncomfortable and gives me so many creep vibes. it doesn't matter if they are a woman or a kid... please don't stare at me, it makes me nervous and makes me mess up your drink and its weird.
Puzzleheaded_Lie706 3 points 1y ago
My favorite is when they correct me on the drink I’m making. Then I smile, and say “This isn’t your drink”
undertoe776 3 points 1y ago
Unpopular buuuutttt the bar is designed for this exact thing
uwumoment 3 points 1y ago
yeah and it makes me feel super awkward, starbucks as a company is very unaware of the feelings the baristas have about every aspect of the job.
Indiana2323 1 points 1y ago
I'm always surprised at these posts because, yeah, the store is designed so that the bar is visible to people waiting. It never occurred to me that the barista thinks I'm rushing them. I'll pull out my phone next time.
undertoe776 3 points 1y ago
I dont mind when people watch....Sometimes I say sorry for the wait. And they reply ....I just enjoy watching...its neat, or whatever.
poisonivory0813 2 points 1y ago
I always just tell them, its gonna be a minute before their order is ready and they may have a seat while they wait. Most of the time they catch the hint and either stand in the back of the store on their phone or have a seat at one of tables.
new_direction_ 2 points 1y ago
Today a customer stood next to the bar and tell me “I actually get it with X” about her drink at every step. Ma’am, I beg you, if you let them know at the register they can ring it in exactly how you want. No whipped cream, extra drizzle, extra crumbles, add crunchies on both top and bottom… I swear they can and they will, it is in fact BETTER that way.
long-pit 2 points 1y ago
Bro I stare BACK. It wasn't even intentional at first, but now it definitely is; if you're gonna cold, dead STARE at me and my coworkers? You will face my eye lasers.
ayakowantsmemes 2 points 1y ago
Also the people who wait to ask for cream and sugar at the handoff despite knowing the condiment bar has been gone for over 2 years .-.
becksaroni 2 points 1y ago
I love when they stand by the water spicket/syrup stand and get splashed. Brings a special joy to my day🥲 Don't stand there if you don't want a bath.
the_REAL_nihilist 2 points 1y ago
Wanna give them the good ol’ 🖕🏻with a really smug look on my face
crzyshiba 2 points 1y ago
Or that uncomfortable eye lock by accident when your shaking the whips lol 😂
RubySapphireSage 1 points 1y ago
Or for dt stores , our store windows are tinted but customers still stare and stick their eyes into our cafe it’s so uncomfortable and now our shifts is making us “keep the window open” but it’s honestly so uncomfortable to have them just stare while taking others orders or baristas on bar and it’s also hard when it’s busy and cafe and dt is packed so everyone’s leaning over the bar and sticking their hands through dt . I’m quick to slam the window idc
hash_0818 1 points 1y ago

The people who lean OVER the bar and just stare right into your soul like theyre using a fantasy power to steal it by sight. Fuck those people, get out of my face stop leaning over the bar and TRYING TO PUMP YOUR OWN SYRUPS
emmymariex 1 points 1y ago
I don't care if people watch me out of curiosity or boredom, I do care if they do it with the intent to rush me via angry brainwaves
barista-baby 1 points 1y ago
literally happened to me today. causes so much anxiety 😭
mushmushmushmus 1 points 1y ago

Personally as a partner, I am very skeptical with how other partners make my drink because I only ever drink blonde espresso and I am very particular. So let’s say some trust has been broken when I get served regular espresso
uwumoment 4 points 1y ago
do you go outside of your shift to get a drink? i usually don’t go to get espresso but if you’re on shift why not make it yourself? not being mean just wondering. if anything i feel like ordering stuff on my days off puts a strain on my baristas so i just don’t do it
Spirited-Village-507 1 points 1y ago
During my shifts, I trust my own partners in the store to make my drink because everyone in my store orders their drinks with blonde espresso. Plus Starbucks says we can’t be making our own drinks and our SM enforces that.

At other stores when I have the day off. I ask for the simplest of drinks like a white mocha with blonde shots and they still seem to fuck it up.
bouncyal [OP] 2 points 1y ago
i usually make my own drinks 😂
MrWisdom39 -1 points 1y ago
I’ve worked at a Starbucks, this has never bothered me. Give them the benefit of the doubt. There’s a reason Starbucks and most cafes have an open bar design. It’s because people have a natural fascination with coffee making. It’s the same idea as an open kitchen space. Now of course there’s always a line. Once I have 20 people staring at you impatiently then of course it becomes nerve wrecking. But I always was the person to start conversation and make the whole scene mine for the taking. There are opportunities and it depends how u think and how u act on them. U want to be nervous and feel uncomfortable or do you want to make it a show and make sure people have a good time.
bouncyal [OP] 6 points 1y ago
i could definitely do something like that, but i automatically get uncomfortable and honestly a little bit mad when people start doing this lol so it makes me not even want to interact with them. just get their drink done quick and out so they stop staring at me. plus, there’s ton of people who genuinely get anxious and nervous. not everyone likes to be in the spotlight (or stared at menacingly) so it’s understandable for some people not to want to “make it a show”. i work at starbucks, not a circus.
MrWisdom39 1 points 1y ago
I work at an actual bar now, for a renown restaurant group. The staring is Inevitable. Customers are drunk, perhaps even lonely. They may be humble, pretty, or just straight nasty towards you They’re rich and want their drink NOW. customers want to interact with us. We make their drink for them. Being trained at the bar. My mentor a hospitality consultant who travels around the world, specifically told me that now that I’m at the bar. The spotlight is on me, I’m on stage. So be weary what I do or say in front of guests.
Starbucks was the first step towards that. I used to get frustrated for the same exact thing. But you know! I feel like a fool. Life is too short to be mad and frustrated over silly things. to be fair, Starbucks created a culture that is toxic and belittling. I began to think outside the box. because of my mentality and actions. I had most people specifically request me to make their drink. Not only that, I got tipped well, I networked, and made new friends. heck, I’ve even had girls write their #’s solely based on my charisma and overall fun wellbeing. It’s all about you’re mentality. If you feel like you’re some piece at a circus, well then you’re gonna feel used. For me, working at Starbucks was the equivalent of working at a McDonald’s. But you know what I don’t care. I took care of my family during the pandemic. Most importantly. No matter what I did, I was gonna do my best at it. Be the best. I’ve been at my store a year. Got a black apron, and won partner of the quarter 2x. Now, im on my way to becoming a seasoned bartender in one of the most renowned restaurants in my area. My mentor makes quarter of a million a year.
PluralPaul 4 points 1y ago
I think the issue is less people staring in general, and moreso the distance from the bars that they're staring from. Although I know I've gotten quite used to both since starting 4+ years ago
uwumoment 9 points 1y ago
the people who will stand at the counter blocking other people is what makes me nervous because if i put a drink there they’ll grab it or drink from it without it being theirs and the customers whose name i call will not hear or see their name.
