How long in advance do you have to request time off? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ExpensiveSchedule229
I have a trip planned and i put it in 4 weeks and 5 days in advance. My manager is saying that she can’t approve that. What am I supposed to do?

It had to be at least 21 days in advance. That's more than enough time in advance. Though your manager can decline your request for other reasons but they have to tell you why.

Ok thank you sm! And like if they deny is what does it mean if i go..? Do i get fired or what happens?
Nalin90 11 points 1y ago
I mean if you are scheduled and don't show up for your shifts then yeah that's grounds for firing. I'm not sure what to do in this situation except talk to your store manager and find out why she denied it and let her know that you definitely will not be available for that time.

Ok im gonna talk to her tomorrow and see what she says. It just sucks because i don’t wanna lose the job but I already booked my trip. Just kinda a bad situation. 🥲 thanks for the help

Best of luck to you

Remember, you arent requesting the days, youre giving notice of your absence! Id suggest asking them to fully reimburse you for your flight tickets, gas, and hotels of all people involved (or your equivalent of such) if they dont wanna approve it that bad

This is terrible advice, you are requesting the days off. It’s literally called a “Time Off Request”.

Well, of course thats what management wants you to treat it as. But lets be real, if its something important to you, like a wedding or a trip you already bought rickets for, a well needed vacation, etc etc, are you REALLY going to "ask"? What will you do if its rejected? Is your job, at starbucks, really worth more than the things you plan to do outside of it?

I put this advice down because you deserve the time off you schedule for yourself whether or not management wants to give it to you. of course its worded as a request in the system, they want their workers to bend to their will at all times. Do better for yourself my bro

wait, if they decline they have to tell you why? I didn’t know that

21 days is the minimum requirement. Summer has a lot of requests off. So if your a store that can only support 3 or 5 or whatever requests off per day and that many have already been approved then everyone else gets denied. If it’s a longer vacation ask the sm if it’s because of certain. Like sometimes I can convince a friend who doesn’t work Sundays to work a Sunday so I can take a full week off for a vacation.

If you know you want to go somewhere during popular season (July, thanksgiving/Black Friday, Xmas eve - New Years) request it off like 6 months in advance. I’ve worked at stores where super tenured partners sit down January 1st and request all the days they want off for the year at once. It’s almost always approved since it’s so early.

What should i do if im denied? I can’t just not go on my trip its booked and everything 😬 i also just started working there and mentioned id take a couple trips over the summer. Im not really sure what else to do

Find coverage is the unfortunate answer. Coverage doesn’t have to come from your own store. Get yourself added to the Facebook groups now. Ask your other partners who in the store likes lots of hours and talk to them ahead of time about picking up your shifts that week. See if anyone has access to the group chats for the stores near you and start letting everyone know what days you might need coverage for.

Isn’t the manager supposed to do that? Im just a 17 year old like i dont have the contacts of anyone to reach out
persona-2 1 points 1y ago
If your sick or it’s an emergency then yes.

If you request time off and the manager says no I
need you here then it’s your job to find coverage.

Who trained you? That’s generally a good starting place. Same with friendly shift supervisors. Those people have been around longer and generally have better contacts.

You can always ask another partner if they want to pick the shift up from you or if they want to swap days? If that fails, you could always ask other stores in your district if they want the shifts

We are extremely short staffed i really think it’s literally not possible 🥲 i work w the exact same small group of people. Idk what to do 🥹

Reach out to sm's at surrounding stores and ask now, before the schedule for that week is made, if they'd be able to offer some support to your store so you can take your vacation.
