Mobile app has kinda ruined our tips….. since that’s like 90% of the orders and no one thinks to tip when mobile ordering
EliMinivan [OP]19 points1y ago
I work at a licensed store, we only take cash tips

I dunno about that. Our paychecks consistently have digital tips on them, and daily will have customers come up to the POS to drop some tip in the jar before getting their items from the mobile order hand-off.
Our average tip rate each week is usually around or over $2.50/hr.
EliMinivan [OP]5 points1y ago
My store only takes the app for payment, no mobile orders, no ability to scan the qr code for points, no mobile tipping.
RyusuiJL1 points1y ago
Are you corporate or licensed?
EliMinivan [OP]3 points1y ago
Licensed, Safeway

I work at the busiest location in my district, in a city with a cost of living almost $24/hr and the only time we ever hit $1.00+/hr in tips (even when combining digital and physical tips) is during the holiday season.
RyusuiJL1 points1y ago
The longer I'm on this sub, the more I come to realize just how incredible of a gem my location is.

There are some days where there’s 75¢ in the tip far from 5:30 -2 :(
rubenchago11 points1y ago
i dont rely on tips. because its a nice surprise when i get them
Lone_loser3111 points1y ago
We’re not even allowed to get tips, it all goes to a donation box they keep to themselves :/
astivana5 points1y ago
Smells like wage theft!
BlackberryOpposite313 points1y ago
What? Are you a corporate store?
Lone_loser319 points1y ago
It’s one of those little Starbucks in grocery stores, Harris teeter to be exact. We’re told not to accept tips either but me and my coworkers do anyway :/ but since theirs no tip jar customers do rarely
Not_Another_Karen2 points1y ago
Same here. Donation bin that gets tossed in the till at the end of the night....

Wish my store had a tip jar like that 😕 We just use the plexi cubes
Rai_Teh_Fox2 points1y ago
made $17 in tips on my last paycheck, also in a licensed store. depends a lot on the week though.
willywankaz4321 points1y ago
My store gets good tips. The partners at our store get tipped $50 - $100 in a day. Sometimes more depends on the day!
EliMinivan [OP]2 points1y ago
Lmao the most I get in a WEEK is 40 bucks
thatoneredhead131 points1y ago
Definitely need that. We keep getting our tip plexi stolen😒
imathrowayslc1 points1y ago
We usually average $1.25-$1.50 an hour and go up to a little over $2.00/hr during holidays. Busy café store. We have a great team though and an awesome manager.
Chhhloem41 points1y ago
It may help to move some bills out periodically to a different container. Customers may be less likely to tip if they think the tip jar is already too full. 🤷♀️

Definitely going to be in the minority here. A hot take as you will. But as a barista, I don’t expect tips. I don’t think people should feel obligated to tip for a quick cup of coffee.
EliMinivan [OP]19 points1y ago
But when the orders aren't just a quick cup of coffee, many of them being large orders of fraps and weird shaken drinks...it would be nice if they at least put some loose change in the jar.
KratosKrist1 points1y ago
I suppose I can get behind that. Take an upvote!
niftyynifflerr4 points1y ago
As a barista, if everyone wanted one food item and one standard drink, I would be fine with no tips as a rule. The fact is, as a barista, we know that's not what the majority of our customers will order. So it kinda demoralizing and demotivating to make $USD 0.65/hour in tips (our average) when your average ticket is $27 with wait times low and connections high.
Key-Consideration1900 points1y ago
no one is required to tip 🤷🏾♀️
Kings_and_Dragons1 points1y ago
But when our company isn't paying us a living wage and they're making us bend over backwards for their complex drink, adding to our already busy workload, they *really should* tip even if they're not required to.
Our mission is to provide everyone with access to large- scale community websites for the good of humanity. Without ads, without tracking, without greed.
