Any tips on not napping all day(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Partymixvix
I’m an opener/early morning barista and have been for the last 8 months, before that I had just an open availability so I would have mids, nights and early morning but not very many opens. I am not someone who can just go to sleep at 8 pm and call it a day. I’ve tried melatonin and it helps but I feel messed up by the morning from sleepiness. After work I pass out for hours and can’t seem to sleep normally. This has been going on for months now and I just feel tired all the time and can’t sleep at night. If I don’t nap sometimes it doesn’t make a difference and I still can’t sleep at night. Any recommendations? I love mornings but this can’t continue

I used to struggle with the same thing when I first started. Keeping yourself busy is key because I don’t have time for naps anymore so by 7-8pm I was very tired and would fall right asleep. It’s not fun going to bed that early but it prevents you from having a crazy sleep schedule!

Pot to get to sleep and Trazodone to stay asleep. I’m on 200mg

Lol at the downvotes, this is perfectly viable and knew some openers that did this.

honestly i had to stop opening because of this issue. i literally cannot fall asleep until at least midnight most of the time. like in theory it was nice being off early in the day but i’d waste it napping. if it really is starting to affect your mental health, you might wanna look into either switching to later in the day, or a new job all together. nothing would help me either so i know your pain, i tried everything other than prescribed sleeping medication.

I don't want this to sound rude, but maybe try seeking mental health help. Using headspace, or Lyra, or something similar
Edit: this happens to me frequently, usually because I'm not managing my depression properly

i only work mornings (most shifts for me start at 4:30am) and i have insomnia so yeah it’s a definite struggle. it takes me hours to fall asleep and i typically wake up at least once during the night. if melatonin makes you too sleepy i would suggest talking with your doctor to find a sleeping pill at a low dosage that doesn’t make you feel groggy when you wake up :) when i find a dosage that works for me it makes my whole day a lot better!
also you’ll need to work on your ~sleep hygiene~ which means coming up with a bedtime routine that you do every night, ie don’t look at any screens past 7pm let’s say, maybe read a book before bed to get sleepy, put on music or a podcast (the latter involves a screen so kind of tricky lol). i’m really bad at following this advice but my therapists and doctors always tell me the same thing so i hope at least one of us can benefit from the medical tips, good luck!

Create a set bedtime routine. For me this means listening to my favorite podcast which has calm voices but interesting commentary. I'll turn it on and lay down with my melatonin gummy (its the olly brand) and I'll listen to the podcast for as long as it takes me to fall asleep. at the beginning it took me up to 2.5 hours but that was fine because I was just interested enough in the content.
Ive had this routine for a good few months now and it takes me less and less time to fall asleep and the flavor of the melatonin gummy makes me sleepy just because it's what my body expects now. Now I can be asleep within 10 minutes so it really helps me fall asleep at a decent hour (or whenever I want within reason).
