Hi everyone! I’m a recently hired part-time shift supervisor and have now been working at starbucks for about 2-3 months now (in Ontario, Canada). Because I am a full-time university student and have easy access to commute to my university, I decided to not purchase a car and instead bought an electric scooter to help commute to university.
Recently, I decided to ride the electric scooter to my shift at starbucks as I only live about 5-10 minutes away, and parked it in the backroom of the store, folded up and in one corner, barely taking up any space or becoming a tripping hazard.
I usually uber to my shifts paying $15-16 CAD everyday and take a bus back home, spending a total of roughly $20 everyday getting to work and back home.
My manager (who is also relatively new at my location) didn’t say anything about it till I asked her if it was okay for me to ride the scooter to work everyday as it would literally save me $20 everyday. She told me that she’ll allow it for the day but moving forward I’m not allowed to park my scooter anywhere inside the store (including the cafe area) “as per the starbucks policy” and would need to either park it outside or find an alternative way to get to work.
There is no bike/electric scooter parking stand outside my store and I also do not feel comfortable parking it outside as it is quite expensive (at least for myself as a student).
I just felt very weird hearing that from my manager because a) I cannot find any such policy anywhere online and b) If it was a customer bringing their scooter/bike inside the cafe and making it a tripping hazard for others, I would have understood, but I literally work here and would always park it folded up at the back, away from anyone and anything (our store is also quite big and I can easily park the scooter in one corner of the cafe area without it being a tripping hazard) and c) it’s also saving me a bunch of hundreds of dollars that I’m spending getting to work every month.
I guess my question is: Has anyone else gone through a similar struggle/or knows who I can contact to see if there can be any exceptions made or any solutions that we can get to?
And where can I find this starbucks policy that states that partners cannot park their electric scooters/bikes at the back of the store if there is adequate space?
