we have a regular who's your typical middle aged male asshole (you know the type), usually he just grumbles and gets his coffee and tries to get free food whatever. today him and his buddy are standing at the register, so i finish what i'm doing and walk over to take their orders. i smile, i say hi. tell me why this man looks right at me and says, "we were just making fun of you."

He probably feels very little inside. Imagine being a whole grown-ass adult going into a coffee shop with your whole grown-ass adult buddy and picking somebody and telling them that you're making fun of them.

No, you don’t have to deal with that. Immediately lock the register and tell the shift on duty what was just said and let THEM handle the customer. I’m speaking as a supervisor. It is my job to support everyone on the daily schedule. I’d happily ask a customer to leave and call my SM, DM, PCC than force a barista to worry about a regular customer. No. No. No.

"Sorry, our register isn't working right now, so if you could step aside and wait until our server is back up or go to x café down the street, they will be able to serve you there". Then take the next order.
