Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Getting a raise to $15 just isn’t enough… (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by xyaiph
I’ve been working at the same Starbucks for almost 11 years. I love my team, location, and customers. I know every regulars drink by heart. I know every regulars name and they know mine. I’m also a coffee master. I am told by dm’s, sm’s and sv’s that I bring up the spirit of our third place with laughter, singing, support, quick times in dt, and good ol’ fashion hard work.

I was once a supervisor but stepped down to take a second job…but that’s a whole other story…

I’ve put a lot of hard work, effort and love into my daily interactions with everyone at my store…and I just found out about how much I could be making after the minimum raise. And it’s quite underwhelming…

Currently I’m sitting around $14 dollars and change per hour. Which isn’t bad but it’s not great in my local economy.

With the raise to a minimum of $15/hour plus the +7% for tenured partners. I’ll be making a measly…
16 dollars and 7 cents…

So in my market/area as of right now, the company minimum wage is $12.50 (local minimum wage is $10.50)

Let’s say we have a green bean, who just got hired before May. They makes $12.50 currently and they are getting a $2.50 raise once August hits. Great, good on them.

But… I’m still here getting less of a raise (a pitiful +$1.80) for being…what? Oh, I don’t know…a seasoned partner of more than a decade? An asset to the team? A knowledgable and dependable worker?

Is that right? Am I doing something wrong in my calculations?

Or do my years of hard work only amount to a single $1 more than green beans?

Seriously, what the hell am I supposed to do…?

-The rent at my apartment is increasing by $200 dollars/ month.

-Gas prices are insane!

-I’m trying to save up for a house that seemingly keeps being pushed further beyond my reach!
(I’m already qualified for 400k with excellent credit and I STILL can’t afford the monthly.)

-I got engaged last year and can’t even save up for when I could possibly afford a wedding.

-Hell… EVERYTHING is soo expensive these days…

And I get a single $1/hour raise for “10 years of dedicated service.”

I love what I do, I love this company, and the benefits I already utilize…I just wish they would pay me a fair living wage and gave me some hours.

im so sorry you’re not getting the raise you deserve. unfortunately this company does not care about its partners on the front lines. you’re doing a great job and you deserve way more :-( <3

Thank you for listening to my needlessly long rant…but when I found out what my raise looks like for me this morning…I was so let down.

Sounds like you need to unionize, pm me if you have questions. I’m currently going through the process at my store.

Just wondering where you live that you’re only at @ $14 after 11 years? I’ve been with Starbucks for 3 years come November as a barista and I make over $15 in Pittsburgh

Las Vegas, a historically cheap big-ish city to live in (not so much these days) so when I started the minimum wage was $8.50.

i recently found out that our new hire green beans start above $16.38 and a lot of 1-3 year baristas barely get paid $15. its infuriating that you're being underpaid.

as horrible as it sounds i think you’re making more than a lot of people in the company. i make 12 an hour and shifts get 15 in my area (a large city). the company doesn’t care about anyone, they stay just enough above minimum to make people upset with us for complaining

At least you're making $4 over your areas minimum wage, tenured partners in states where the minimum wage is already $15 are making about $2 over minimum wage. Which is what most other places offer anyway as starting wage. Only thing that keeps us here are the benefits and pretty good work conditions.

Unless your goal is management then companies like Starbucks should be looked upon strictly as something to do while you ready yourself for a higher paying career.

yeah i don’t know why you’re getting downvoted for this lol nobody’s life plan should be just working as a starbucks barista
