Code switching (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by board-certified
Firstly, i’m black man. I’m also a shift and i’ve been with the company for over 3 and a half years and i constantly have to codes switch every moment i’m at work. Code switching is not limited to just vocabulary, it’s also how you talk and the culture of how you communicate with people is changed. I work with sooooo many white people that don’t understand when i’m joking or what i’m trying to convey in many common situations. And it frequently results in a misunderstanding and sensitive moment for the white person im talking to and i have to explain to them what my language and expressions and tone mean in that moment. It only happens with the white people i have ever worked with. I’m 25 and i’ve worked many jobs and dealt with a lot of people from undergrad and during grad school now and how different groups of friends and family who are black, poc, and white and this misunderstanding only comes with the some of white people I interact with. It’s really frustrating because i always feel like i have to code switch in order to perceived as approachable or non problematic and when these situations happen it always comes across as the big black guy is being mean to white people or something when that’s never the intention. I feel like i can never let my guard down or even say anything because I think i would be told im in the wrong. this is just so frustrating because starbucks is already not a place where you see a lot of POC and black people work and this in embedded in the culture not just at starbucks but most work places. it’s so exhausting to always have to “watch my back”. I’m just so tired 😪

Is this in any way similar to what a lot of people in the ADHD/autistic communities call "masking?" Basically changing all of your mannerisms to make those around more comfortable?

Hello🖖🏾 people don't understand how exhausting it is. Don't let someone make a joke or something I don't understand they either get the blank face or i just laugh because they do. Especially having a drive through and being on window that's why I choose to open by the time peak comes I'm out of there.

hi friend. I don’t work at starbucks but at my internship I find myself code switching all day long & it’s so exhausting/annoying

right now i need a really big scream/release session because something happened today where it’s just built up from an extended period of time and it’s been so long since my last one

Or when I get my hair done (box braids) most of the white customers would stare and I think it’s a shock for some because they think we aren’t allowed to wear such long braids or my coworkers would come touch my hair and it’s a HUGE NO NO for me .

Edit : sometime I feel like the tone I talk is to “ghetto” so I switch it until some High pitched voice because with if I don’t customers would assume I’m being rude or when they pulled through the window they would be like “ I thought you were yt” and I’m like “oh haha sorry 🫥”

When I did my own braids, I had a regular ask me how often I wash my hair! And another one take a picture (without permission)of me to show his kids ive moved stores now, but man o man was not a fan. I hate doing my hair now for that reason.

Whoa! Touching w/out consent is a big no no in any setting, but especially at work.

Sorry dude, as a white guy I know we can be... exhausting, and I don't have to deal with any of the shit you do. I was a barista for almost 3 years in a very white city and was disappointed that over that time and three stores I had a total of 2 black coworkers (I know that sounds weird; not really sure how to properly phrase that). Don't go out of your way to make your white coworkers comfortable, we don't really deserve to be coddled and a lot of us reeeeaally need to get out of our white bubbles.

This sounds frustrating and exhausting. I’m sorry that you’re not able to be your authentic wonderful self at work. Thank you for sharing this.
