As everyone knows it’s pride month, well I work in Nor Cal and we’ve gotten so many complaints about how we are “shoving down their throats” by only having two flags up. Like tiny flags, nothing huge. Our district manager, after hearing about those complaints, said that our store alone will only get three days to celebrate pride? How is that fair? These people get to fly around their confederate flags and trump flags all year long but that’s not considered shoving it down our throats. They call that showing pride. So what’s the difference. Sorry I just wanted to rant about it.

because starbucks like to play performative progressivism and hire people of color and people in the lgbt community for tokenism but don’t want to actually stand up for the communities they claim to support and invest in. just like any other corporation

Because standing up for what you believe in should only be done in the presence of those who already agree with you.

I always encourage nice customers to feel free to call and complain about the shitty parts. I’ll have the number/flyer for how to contact them right there behind the counter. Just tell them to say something along the lines of “I’m so upset my favorite store took down the pride flags it made me feel so included. Now I feel unappreciated. This is probably going to make me go to a different more local all inclusive store” if they get enough calls like that it should fuck them up good at least that’s my hope 😂😂

Great IDEA!!! I WISH!!!!

Thats ridiculous! My store literally hasn’t put anything out.🥺 but yeah thats sad

My manager said we aren’t allowed to decorate for Pride…
Additional_Shoe6 points1y ago
It’s so interesting to me how this varies from store to store. Is it really just down to store manager discretion on decor related matters? What are the parameters set by policies?
ThatBichAlex7 points1y ago
I know that it’s more the DM that is putting pressure on my SM. They are non-binary and often have issues with the DM misgendering them so I’m not surprised the DM is against pride decorations 😒

Ok..I worked at a Starbucks in King County..(FYI Seattle is in KING county)…and I was told we couldnt hang any pride stuff up in OUR store due to our store manager. 🤬
(p.s.Sorry…its been a year since I stopped working there and cannot remember what the store mgr is called?)
spacebrain42011 points1y ago
Wow I live in the Deep South and have pride stuff all over and I’m honestly surprised but no one has said anything about it.
LaurabelleBabe10 points1y ago
I live in the very conservative state of Louisiana and recently I had a women throw her drink at me and told me to find Jesus because apparently I’m a “fa**ot” and a “Jezabell” for working in such an ungodly place… I’m a cis straight female who’s married and a Christian…. “Find Jesus”? Says the women being hateful 😒
jetstarxo [OP]3 points1y ago
That is so pathetic of her! I’m sorry that happened to you :((
spoopy_ruby1 points1y ago
If it’s such an ungodly place why is she even there
LaurabelleBabe2 points1y ago
I guess she didn’t know Starbucks supported pride 🔴🟠🟡🟢🔵🟣
RandomNYCx10 points1y ago
We’ve had a big Pride flag in the front window well before June. Only one made a stink was some Middle aged lady that said it’s “too liberal”. Good luck trying to take it down with a lesbian manager where a quarter of the staff is LGBT 🏳️🌈
RinnTheOtter5 points1y ago
I’m pretty sure this is literal discrimination and you should go higher up about this

That's awful. My district isn't even allowed to decorate their stores, save for the community board.
Bewildered_CO_Chick2 points1y ago
They should see some of the Starbucks in WA State if they are complaining about 2 little flags. We have stores that have gone all out and are sharing the love. I mean if they’re homophobic they could just say that….
jetstarxo [OP]2 points1y ago
Our dm gave us three days to celebrate pride and decorate. So for those three days we are going to deck out the store! I’m very excited to see and hear how people react.
b99__throwaway2 points1y ago
not sure how close to it you are, but i used to live in redding. it sucked, and i know exactly how you feel and i’m sorry :((
jetstarxo [OP]2 points1y ago
I’m like 2 hours away from Redding! So I bet we have had the same experiences lol it really does suck but there’s not much to do besides keep doing it till they give up trying.
xxbleeding_outxx2 points1y ago
that’s awful i’m so so sorry
SatanicPisces1 points1y ago
watching straight people’s PDA is shoving heterosexuality down my throat every single day and it grosses me out cause i’m not straight just like homosexual pda grosses them out cause they aren’t queer so sorry i will keep up my beautiful, non disruptive flags. no one will ever be satisfied, all we can do is coexist.
TylerJ7161 points1y ago
Wow. I'm so sorry to hear that! We've got a hand painted flag in one of our windows, and I thought Starbucks just came out with the t-shirt color week for pride month??
badbaristuh1 points1y ago
surprised only one person has encouraged you to escalate this, but Starbucks *as a company* allows store spirit and decorations and recognizes pride. It’s in the weekly updates, ffs. Please do take this higher up, especially if you’re in CA. your regional manager and partner resources are both good places to start, numbers are in the back of house. This is discrimination and it sounds like your DM is consistently problematic and harming more people than just your manager.
rlogranite1 points1y ago
The people flying the other flags don't work at Starbucks. That's the difference.
fuwaldah0 points1y ago
Stores in your area are hanging up Trump and confederate flags?
glo-frog0 points1y ago
This is how it was for me when I worked in NorCal! I was yelled at by so many customers when I wore my BLM shirt or Pride shirt. NorCal is so full of people who are basically anti-Cali but don’t want to move out. Now I’m by the SC coast and we painted our store with rainbows and flag handprints representing our LGBTQ+ partners and customers. It’s so strange how it varies. I’m sorry that you have to deal with people like that still :(
