Question About Transfers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Bonzai_Monkey
Hi there to you all!

I am planning on moving cross-country, and would like to line up some work before I move. I was wondering if I could get a job at Starbucks in my town, working here for a while, then transfer to an establishment located to where I'd be moving.

Thanks, and have a nice day!

How long would you work at the hiring store?
Bonzai_Monkey [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Probably around a month, give or take a little.

Given the short time-frame, I figured I might just be better off moving, and then applying directly to the Starbucks nearby.

Nobody will hire you for just a month.

Figured lol

The hiring process can take a long time, from the interview to getting onto the schedule can take up to 4 weeks and you might get scheduled for training for 1 or 2 weeks depending on your availability and the store's trainers' availability. It might be easier to begin applying to stores in the area you plan to move to and try calling to speak to a SM let them know you've submitted an application but you're currently in another state and if they are hiring and think you're a good fit if they would consider doing a video interview and all that stuff.

Awesome, that's great to know! It definitely couldn't hurt to try to contact them before hand and see if they have available positions

i think there is a minimum time you have to work at starbucks before you transfer

Thanks, I hadn't considered that! I won't be staying much longer in my town (2 months tops) so I don't think it would necessarily be worth it.

The technical time period is 6 months. There are exceptions for transferring early such as moving, but you may want to mention that up front, so they don’t feel like they are “wasting time” on you. I told my manager during my interview that I intended on transferring at the end of holiday last year, which was only four months after my hire date and that was something that he decided we could work with.

Would you say that 2 months is too short of a time period to work before transferring? I feel like it is, but I have no experience (and as such, no real way to know).

It honestly depends on how quickly you learn. I was a trainer by that point because I was able to pick up really quickly, so it wasn’t an issue about transferring me to a new store. But some stores don’t want to transfer in a barista that isn’t super well rounded yet because they won’t really have the training hours to support or retrain you if your store isn’t able to prioritize your training. However, I really like the job and I think it’s fun and if you think you can do it you should try!

Yeah, I've really liked the idea for a while, and I'm excited to give it a go!
