Would you guys, specifically a shift, allow someone to work if they walked in and asked..?(self.starbucksbaristas)

Going through a rough patch rn, honestly work has become my safe haven and we are understaffed often; I’m tempted to just walk in and ask if I can come in and work, I’m fine with doing literally anything.
I turn 18 in August as well, so that may come into account in regard to hours… at this point I’m just desperate, I’m willing to work for free at this point 😭

It may be a joke but never ever work for free.

The first year I worked at Starbucks my life was hell and Starbucks was all I had. Soo I asked my manager for any odd projects to do. (Always paid of course Dont work for free) sometimes I would clean the back room. Organize freezer or find new places to put things. Doesn’t hurt to ask

Hi! SM here! As I usually add to my comments, my state can and probably has different laws regarding labor so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I wouldn’t just show up. The only chance you have in being allowed to work would be if someone called out.
Since you’re a minor, you won’t be able to work more than a 4 hour shift on weekdays, so keep that in mind.
With how Starbucks has us write schedules, there isn’t the wiggle room in the budget to allow someone to walk in and work a shift unplanned. Your best bet if you want to work is to seek out shifts to take! Ask your partners and see if people want to take an extra day off and snag those shifts! Download shift marketplace and adventure to new stores and meet new people!
My last piece of advice is to tell your SM you want all the hours they can give you. Our manager group chat is usually booming with nearby managers seeking out partners to work shifts that someone called out for. I’m guessing it’s probably the same in your area! Just tell your SM to shoot you a text anytime someone nearby needs a shift filled!
Good luck!

Another alternative is if you have a lobby, bring a laptop or book or something and spend sometime doing something 'productive'. Note: PRODUCTIVE, if you goof around or just distract yourself you run the risk of creating a negative association with your workplace. You don't want 'starbucks=playtime' in your head, because it will make working a shift miserable.
If you want there are many self-help, personal development, or fun college classes free online and I've always found taking and finishing one very rewarding. Plus they are usually self paced so no stress.

Was def thinking about doing this, are there any courses you recommend?
Due_Ad_67932 points1y ago
Well, it's up to personal preference, I'm taking piano basics, a self defense course (not as good as a real one but better than nothing), took some math to help me get back up to speed when I went back to college, and a photography beginners course. This is just some that I've taken recently. There's tons if you are interested in computers/IT/data.
Coursesity has an app you can download that browses several websites for you, which I use regularly. You do have to double check that what you're looking at is free, not just a free tutorial, but there's so much you can find nearly anything. They also have reduced pricing if you find one you really like and are willing to pay for. They even have a section dedicated to courses offered by Ivy League colleges, I like their self development courses.
Also, look for the term MOOC, which stands for Massive Open Online Course, these are usually free and can often be applied towards college credits. You can also just play around on Google or check a college of your choice as many have ones they work with or recommend. ASU has a page dedicated to recommended websites.

Depending on the state, the 4 hour shift on weekdays don't apply when school isn't in session

Talk to your manager about getting more hours. Don't just show up and work. You can get people into trouble.

I'm no SM so I couldn't really tell you. But depending on the state you live in you can work 8 hours per day, up to at least 40 hours a week, when school isn't in session. Just pointing that out bc some people are saying you can only work 4 hrs rn.
So definitely ask if you can extend your hours now that its summer! Working has also been my safe place, even when it's stressful. Good luck

As a shift, I can't just let a minor work as many hours as they want. But I would totally be cool with them coming in after school and just hanging out in the lobby or even the back if they need somewhere safe to be as long as they weren't distracting their coworkers.
