How many mistakes a shift is too many? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vividlyvioletvacancy
So I’m an anxious person (I know y’all always say not to pick this job if you are, but tbh it’s helped me a lot already). I make a decent amount of mistakes per shift, but they’re usually smaller things.

I’ve tied the garbage bag wrong, not greeted customers correctly, given out the wrong drink, made a drink incorrectly, etc etc. I’m fairly open to correction and try to let my coworkers who tell me about my mistake my thanks.

However, my last shift, which was only 4 & 1/2 hours long, I think I made around 4 mistakes.

Is this “too many” for a green bean (started beginning of May)?

everybody makes mistakes, every single day. you’re training! mistakes are expected!! i feel so terrible that you’re literally counting your mistakes because you’re so worried about them.

if it makes you feel better, i’m training to become a SSV and the first thing i did was mess up and waste a ton of cold brew. like 6 gallons of the stuff. and it was fine! i have made doubles of drinks, lost drinks, melted a lemon loaf, all of the above pretty recently 😭 by no means does that make me a bad barista, and your mistakes don’t determine your worth either. you’re doing great, you just need to keep up the practice :) <3

Thank you!!!!! No one’s gotten mad at me or anything I just feel bad for our store because we’ve had at least 6 new hires in the past two months. We got a new manager three months ago and apparently the old manager kept the store understaffed. So now all the more experienced employees have to be more patient/conscious of all the newcomers.

Sis, can I call you sis? *puts a hand on your shoulder* Sis, you’re human. If you don’t make a mistake at least once a day, I’d start to think you’re the siren herself. Even the most experienced partners make mistakes everyday.
Don’t feel like you have to count them, or stew on them after your shift! And as for your older partners, they’re probably so excited to have staff that they don’t even notice the mistakes made. Don’t sweat it!

Y’all Reddit baristas are the sweetest 🥺🥺

Babe I've been here four months and I CONSISTENTLY grab hot drink lids for iced lattes. Sometimes I realize the oopsie quickly enough to stop but most of the time it takes my tired brain seeing the hot lid floating uselessly on top of the drink to understand the error I've made. At least once a shift if I get to bar. I've poured cold drinks in hot cups, hot drinks in cold cups (major ick from that one), poured vsc on the floor, dropped fresh gallons of milk and had them explode, dumped beans all over the bars, and the first five times I set up bars in the morning I dumped coffee everywhere. At my store I'm probably average or above average in terms of mistake making.

You're doing great and you've got this! If anyone is getting upset with you over mistakes as a partner who started only last month they can kick rocks.

i’ve been at starbucks for almost 10 months now boo. I constantly make mistakes just like the ones you have. I spilled iced coffee in the ice bin and dumped mocha on the ground in one day. I constantly spill drinks and feel bad when someone cleans them up for me. My supervisors say “there is a list of mistakes you will make and at some point you will do all of them”. Haven’t spilled coffee in the ice bin again and haven’t spilled mocha. You will make mistakes because u are human. But you just learn from them or get help from others:)

Umm, pretty sure I make at least that many mistakes a shift and I've been doing this for a decade. I think learning to catch them is the important thing to concentration on.

Also why does your store have a correct way to tie a garbage bag and greet a customer??
vividlyvioletvacancy [OP] 2 points 1y ago
The garbage bag is hard to explain but basically it works better if when putting fresh bags in the can, you attach a bit of the bag to the can (special can). Makes sense if you see it.

Greeting the customer is like I said “hi how’s it going what can I get for you today?” and I was told to leave a pause to actually let them respond, which is understandable.

I'm a ten year partner and I'm still making mistakes!

Once I filled up the espresso machine with dark roast instead of espresso. Everyone makes mistakes and after awhile you can just laugh about them because mistakes will happen and that is okay!
Electrical_Metal_106 2 points 1y ago
That mistake probably made all the drinks taste better that day lol!

I’m an SSV, I’ve been there two years, and I cannot tell you how many mistakes I make in a day. Got home from work after a particularly rough peak one day and realized I forgot caramel on about ten caramel macchiatos that day because I was just… brainfried. Just kind to yourself and do your best 🤷🏼‍♀️

Been working at Starbucks and I make mistakes literally every day, multiple times a day.
I don’t care and I don’t care if others care lol.
Do your best.
I always tell people that their best is all I ask for.

Damn yeah stop the anxiety bug of telling u a random number of errors to give you approval of your skills, you are better off then a lot of partners that have been at Starbucks for 5+ years so don’t stress lol u are killing it 👍😊
violaaesthetic 2 points 1y ago
I make mistakes constantly and let me tell you something: nobody is counting. Not your SSVs not your SM not even your trainer. They just want to see you get better. Mistakes are a part of that, it’s how we learn. Keep it up! Keep making mistakes and you’ll keep learning

I had the same issues when I started last september, and I asked so many questions and doubted myself and beat myself up about making little mistakes. the best thing to do is know that everyone makes mistakes, even if they’ve been working at starbucks for years and years! just fix whatever it was real quick, brush it off, and move on to the next drink. starbucks is such a fast paced environment that expects so much from its baristas that all of your coworkers around you likely understand what youre going through and have been the same way. just know that you’re learning and eventually, everything will just be muscle memory! most people dont really get the hang of it until about 6 months in anyways, so you’re good

Literally me too! I started May 16 and omg I dwell so on my mistakes. I feel so subconsciously stupid sometimes . But I just need to chill and push on. Yesterday I was told I was moving too slow and then forgot to give the bathroom keys back to my shift leader. I had to call the store to tell them they were in my apron in the back lmao. So thanks to these mistakes that’s literally never going to happen again. Live and learn! We got this
