Unionize to change these things, so much waste. (i.redd.it)

Is there any confirmation that this is just negligent waste and not that the donation accepter refused to take the product or even perhaps the refrigeration failed (it is Texas after all). I hate twitter news stories without context.
happybowlita83 36 points 1y ago
Yeah this seems a little iffy... our donations aren't handles by sbux corporate where I'm located. An organization comes and picks them up directly from our stores and if they don't show up then they do end up becoming waste but it's 100% the organizations responsibility to come picks up the donations.
TheBoisterousBoy 4 points 1y ago
I was gonna say, I worked at two Texas stores for several years, these bags don't even look like what we used.

Because we didn't use bags.

Individual donation agencies would send drivers out to collect the food... in their own bag. The donation places have their own bags for this.
Cust_service_voice 3 points 1y ago
This is what the bags look like now though.
TheBoisterousBoy 1 points 1y ago
Not in my district. I still have several friends who work at different Starbucks in my city and none of them use bags. Everyone has the donation agencies come by.
Cust_service_voice 1 points 1y ago
Hmm makes more sense. Guess it depends on the district tho. Or we are running through all the bags before we switch to that 🤷🏽‍♀️
rlogranite 2 points 1y ago
We use these bags in NJ and the company that delivers the milk at night pick them up and I believe some organization is supposed to pickup the bags from them.
aspiringgrandpa 1 points 1y ago
yeah donations from companies are usually handled by another company once picked up/dropped off. once it’s wrapped up it’s not really starbucks responsibility anymore
fuwaldah 37 points 1y ago
Unions will have zero impact on waste.

This ^

This PALES in comparison to what I saw Costco throwing out daily, and I'm sure it applies to all big box stores. Food waste in America is STAGGERING
Ordinary_Theory8534 21 points 1y ago
This probably is not their fault. Their freeze/fridge could’ve went out, donation people not coming to pick up, or another issue. We never just throw out food unless there’s a reason. I worked a store where the donation people never came to pick up donations and they ended up getting tossed because they went bad. This is something that has nothing to do with unionizing.
saltandseasmoke 8 points 1y ago
'donation people not coming to pick up' is /always/ why we end up throwing out yellow-bagged food at my location. It's so hard to get anyone to consistently come. Our manager has given their blessing for closers to take home any food they want that's going out because partners are apparently a more reliable way for expiring food to actually get used than the local charities we've tried to help.
Mr_SCPF 20 points 1y ago
1. Things like this post are why I think Starbucks unions are silly and just show how little people know about them

2. My store cant even donate food because the people don’t pick it up so this is probably something out of their control
LilacFlores -4 points 1y ago
Just because a small group of people don’t understand unions doesn’t mean you should ignorantly generalize
Gimmecoffee2020 5 points 1y ago
So no donations in a dumpster is going to be part of a union contract?🤔
raditudelover2006 4 points 1y ago
I don’t think you understand how unions work
femme444 3 points 1y ago
no starbucks is throwing out this much waste daily, unless something unprecedented happened. y’all are too easy man
Victoriamarie03 3 points 1y ago
My store tries to give expired food and etc out they tell us no they can’t take it.. not their fault. Don’t be an ass this is nothing to do with unionizing
KobeJay22 3 points 1y ago
My Starbucks licensed store that was unionized wouldn’t even allow us to donate. Everything had to go into the trash and trash only. I’m much happier at my Starbucks corporate store that isn’t unionized!!!
rlogranite 2 points 1y ago
I honestly don't see how unionization would prevent this.
MaybeSorry2975 2 points 1y ago
idk my [texas] store will give some food to partners and we never have that much to actually get rid of. like, a dumpster full of food?? no way. i feel like i’m seeing majority paninis so it makes me think that the refrigeration was broken
BookDragon1996 2 points 1y ago
Assuming this isn’t a fridge failure or the donation not picking up. I agree there’s too much waste at this company we do not need a pastry case and if they want to keep them we should make models. Also the amount of milk we waste is ridiculous. However this company is not going to fix the waste issue and it’s never going to reduce
sarahtilton_ 1 points 1y ago
My sm is very "by the book" about food and we can't take any of it even if it's meant to go to the trash, and as long as I've been there I've never once seen a donation bag. I'm thinking about getting a separate trash bag when I do the sandwich count in the morning and throwing it out next to the dumpster and then telling my gf to go get it and donate it because it makes me so angry how much food we waste. The bakery I used to work at would bring day old cookies to firehouses or shelters because they were so anti food waste.
Dr3am_B0i 1 points 1y ago
the donation store never picked them up so we would either take all of it home or i would walk garbage bags full to the church down the road
Emergency-Ideal7319 1 points 1y ago
Our trash has never been overfilled with donations like this. I'm calling bullshit
Ordinary-Theory-8289 2 points 1y ago
This is clearly either weeks worth if donations or donations form an entire district. That dumpster is filled to the brim. We barely fill one bag a night of donations. These were probably donated and whoever received them either didn’t have the space to store it, or they received such an influx they weren’t able to get rid of it all before it was unsafe to consume
Emergency-Ideal7319 1 points 1y ago
Agreed
overturned23 1 points 1y ago
I hate to be this guy but this is not the case for every sbux. My manager drives them done to homeless shelters and city mission.
poptart-zilla 1 points 1y ago
To be honest. I have never worked at a Starbucks and they ACTUALLY donated the food . Here in Charlotte NC ; it is not allowed and terrible.
