corrective action for sick calls? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by -Ana--
We've had a few rounds of illness go thru our store. And as a result we've had a fair amount of call in for staff being sick. Our SM and ASM have started handing out corrective actions to staff who have been sick, and now staff are afraid to call in and have been working while sick.

We've also gotten a warning from the health board for letting staff work while sick.

Is this Starbucks standard? Or should we be getting our DM or E&C involved?

If they're using sick time, it's definitely not allowed. If they're not using sick time I'm not as sure- you're not allowed to work with foodborne illness symptoms for sure, but they might start being able to write you up, etc. Though it does seem absurd that your SM and ASM are getting on everyone's cases about it even after an issue with the health board.

Someone else will have to chime in with what option actually has a chance of fixing anything. If partners are being denied sick time that's probably time to go outside of Starbucks and start reporting it though.

A partner was just telling me that she was written up she tried looking for coverage, but was unable to find any, so she came in anyway and was sent home and it was marked as a no show.

Just seems fishy is all. I feel bad for these partners

I mean, no-show is incorrect, but aside from clerical error I imagine it still comes down to sick time or not barring local laws.

It might be worth contacting the health board if they're already invested, if you feel like there's pressure to go to work sick still, or if there's bad practices increasing y'all passing all these bugs around. (Bad handwashing, cleaning headsets in drive through, whatever. I've been at stores where bugs went around, but your phrasing makes it sound pretty bad.) Can't say what that'd mean for your job though.

it depends on the sickness? you can’t work with a fever, jaundice, diarrhea, or if you’ve been vomiting. if those are the only things being called out for yeah get your dm involved

If you're sick, you can't work. Call your DM.

Depends on what the write up is for. If you miss 25% ish of your shifts for any reason or combination of reasons you can get written up for irregular attendance.

Sick calls are weird now. If you pass COVID coach and don’t have any sick time left then you likely will get written up for calling out. Like a headache or something like that.
