Any tips for brand new workers?(self.starbucksbaristas)

Just started my first day of training today, any tips for someone who’s never been a barista before?

Enjoy it! I loved working at the bux. I miss it but it was just time for a new journey. Don’t feel the need to rush especially being brand new. Speed will come with time. Angry customers? It’s alright kill them with kindness and have someone else help them if they make you uncomfortable. I loved experimenting with drinks! My coworkers and i used to take nitro shots together at the beginning of peak to get us through. I have some awesome memories from working there.
Good luck little green bean!! ❤️
Also: You’ll figure out your own groove.

Even if a coworker may seem annoyed by questions you may have, always ask. Knowledge is power. You will get good before you become fast, there is nothing wrong with that. Help when and where you can, and likely people will be willing to help you in return.

Don't let the nasty, entitled customers get to you. Like someone else said, kill them with kindness. And also, don't let grumpy coworkers get to you either. Don't let anyone bring you down!!

Be willing to make mistakes you will make lots of them no matter how long you have been with the company

you'll probably be on register first. read the register buttons like a book (left to right) not like a spreadsheet/table (top to bottom).
people often say the drink name before the size, in the top right hand you can tap that size button to change it afterwards.
focus on just learning the "stations" and the "flow" of the store rather than the "details" like recipes or what food goes in what colored bags. The details will come later, you need to focus on the "overall" first.
Focusing on "smooth" motions helps build muscle memory. Repeating in your head or "under your breath" as you are doing each task also helps build muscle memory.

can you elaborate the focusing on the station and flow instead if details? I've noticed the new partners are struggling with picking up the pace and i really wanna help them get through it. thank you !!

I mean understanding the main play stations:
* DT Window/Register (DTR) * DT Order (DTO) * DT Hot Bar * DT Cold Bar * Lobby (Front Register) * Mobile Order & Pickup (MOP) * Warming * Lobby/Mobile Bar
The flow:
* Front Register -> Warming / Hot / Cold Bar -> Pickup * DTO -> Warming / Hot / Cold Bar -> DTR

thank you :)

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you have to ask the same question over and over!! Although it might be stressful, it’s so much better to make sure you’re doing something correctly instead of winging it. :)

Me asking my favorite shift supervisor how long white mocha is good for at least 15 times

Me asking how to make sweet cream and mocha for the 100th time 😂😂😂

Been at my store just over a month with no food or barista experience prior (came from business/corporate career) Lessons learned 1. Repeat the orders back to the customers…even the easy ones and is you’re not clear on something, ask 2. Trust yourself and go at your own pace…of course go as fast as you can, but trying to keep up with the veterans and impatient customers will get you frazzled 3. When you start bar training, they will immediately hit you with sequencing as well so you start thinking and working efficiently….I have a huge issue with this because I can barely remember the recipes much less pre for drinks 2 and 3…my strategy seems to be working too: don’t get flustered and go at your own pace and be deliberate in what you do 4. Listen to your coworkers…if they’re anything like mine, they’re amazing 5. Focus on making genuine customer experiences…I have a mute guy who comes in regularly and it’s obvious that not many folks take the time to communicate with him. We’re buddies now and we hi five whenever he comes in. Really makes me happy. : ) 6. I’m 49 years old and when I need help I always call out “I need an adult” so have fun with not knowing everything 7. It’s a lot but you’ll make your way just fine. I believe in you!

Thank you so so much!! Having no pre experience can be so overwhelming but i’m getting the hang of things rn

ask questions! Bar used to terrify me, but i would always just double check with who i was on bar with and it helped me a lot. Also, you will make mistakes!
Ive been here for almost a year and just realized that venti hot americanos get 4 shots. My one coworker who has been here for a couple of years only just learned that the strawberry frap gets classic. You’ll get the grove eventually, have fun and remember that it’s just coffee

Another coworker of mine was putting 2 jade citrus mints and 2 peach in the sick teas 😬
Btw are you guys still putting water in your chai?! I had barely found out like at the beginning of this year they changed it!
mushmushmushmus1 points1y ago
for hot chai? are you not supposed to anymore???
_jer97_-2 points1y ago
My most recent store told me that’s not the recipe anymore and i was so shocked??? Lol

Quit
bonjourimeric3 points1y ago
STOP 🤣
newday20013 points1y ago
don't let customers get to you ... they're the same everywhere so it's not worth quitting for another tedious job with lower pay. You really have to gain a sense of humor from the mistakes you make. not to be a hippy but let everything you do come from joy and wanting to learn and the shift will be pleasant. ask all the questions you want. bar will become intuitive with practice so don't worry about that. have fun
bonjourimeric2 points1y ago
This job is really fun, but it gets fast paced and stressful sometimes! Don’t take shit from anybody, especially when busy. Remember that you’re doing the best you can in the moment and to stand up for yourself, be it to customers or fellow partners!

It’s fun and difficult to work at SB if you can quit now and thank me later
