Skipping tens? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by horseman-0bvi0usly
Anyone else’s SSVs routinely skip tens without checking with you if we aren’t staffed enough to give them out easily? When I asked a couple SSVs about it, they were dodgy in their answers, which makes me think they’re purposefully hiding this practice from our SM. Should I have a talk with the SM & clue her in??

Edit: they do cross the breaks off in the book, just like they would if we had actually gotten a break. That feels illegal lowkey, like, it’s falsifying paperwork that I’m pretty sure they have to initial… Lmk if I’m wrong about that

2nd edit: Been informed that it’s not illegal at all and they don’t have to initial anything. Still tho, it must be against sbux policy at least, right? You’re legit lying to your manager & corporate by intentionally crossing them off when you know they didn’t happen

I'd talk to your SM tbh. SSV should be giving y'all your breaks. When I was a SSV, I'd skip mine just to make sure my baristas got theirs
horseman-0bvi0usly [OP] 14 points 1y ago
Thanks for the advice 💞
Tha_jphil 11 points 1y ago
Def same, I’ll break people who got there way after I did before myself to make sure they don’t get left behind. But def check in on your SSVs, sometimes we be struggling so hard I’ll almost forget to break a 10 every once and a while and feel terrible for it
EspressoPatr0num 6 points 1y ago
100000% my baristas' breaks are prioritized over mine.
esaeklsg 36 points 1y ago
Their own or baristas? I’ve never known SSVs to purposefully deny baristas breaks. If you’re seeing this behavior from multiple SSVs that smells fishy that it’s coming from the SM too. I do not like the sound of this.
horseman-0bvi0usly [OP] 30 points 1y ago
Baristas. They skip their own breaks too, but what burns me up is that they don’t check with us and just ask if we’re willing to forego our break for the sake of a smooth shift, they just silently don’t give them out. It really sucks waiting for a break that never comes.
esaeklsg 11 points 1y ago
Yeah, I'd start with going to the SM though I don't know that I have faith that will do much in this circumstance. Also I'd start getting really annoying about "hey just checking, when can I expect my ten?" until they just give them to you. You'll start annoying them but that's kind of what they deserve tbh.
cpv_91 2 points 1y ago
That's some dodgy shit right there. If all you're getting your whole shift is a 10, they damn well better be giving it to you. If your SM is in on this, kick it up the chain to the DM. And for sure that is falsifying paperwork.

I seriously just got hot under the collar thinking about this like it was happening to me. This is sooo wrong. Let us know what happens.
ProfessionalRock7940 21 points 1y ago
I mean, I'll skip my own 10s but never a barista's
JugglesTheKlown 21 points 1y ago
The ASM at a store I help out at did this consistently. I've filled a complaint with a DSM and have heard back nothing.
horseman-0bvi0usly [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Wow. Is this an ongoing thing? If so, maybe call ethics & compliance next?
cornonthefrawg 6 points 1y ago
A good ssv will skip their own 10 to make sure baristas get theirs. At least in my state it’s required by law to have a break working over 3 hours and also Starbucks policy it’s stated. Go to your SM and if they don’t listen call ethics & compliance or partner resources
JugglesTheKlown 6 points 1y ago
I definitely will be doing that. I just need to document more. It's not my home store so I'm only here a few times a week but I've had 3 partners ask me about it and if it was normal. I'm a Barista Trainer of 2 years. Not normal at all.
horseman-0bvi0usly [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Dang, 3 whole baristas brought the issue to your attention? That’s bad. Get them all to call ethics & compliance too, then that’s 4 whole reports against that store 😜
Chemical-Less 5 points 1y ago
ABSOLUTELY talk to your sm about this. I had a shift who tried this, n i was walking up to them asking them when I could take my 10 like every 20 mins till they gave in. Depending on your area it could be illegal, it certainly is in mine
PastBanana4371 3 points 1y ago
As a SSVs at least in my state we ARE NOT obligated to give you a ten. Is taking time from the company that’s literally paying you to not do anything. If it’s a 30 it’s mandatory, but different states are different, I’m just saying. I do give my baristas their 10’s but I skip mines lol
amalia13lightning 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, in my state the tens aren't required. We still do them though. And, sorry OP, but crossing off breaks on the DCR isn't falsifying paperwork and they don't have to initial it. If they did give breaks and forgot to cross them off nothing would happen either.
BlueMuffins92 2 points 1y ago
I called the PRSC and tens are required regardless of your state laws. There needs to be consistency in the company and if it prints on the DCR you are required to run it. This is a big reason why partners are unionizing now in my opinion. Breaks are a big benefit we get here and is a big reason why partners with disabilities find a home here.
poopylilbutt 1 points 1y ago
Yea and it’s Starbucks’ choice as a company to pay workers for 10 minute breaks.
Imaginarybluntallday 2 points 1y ago
Literally go take a ten at the three hour mark of each shift. I’m not sure which state you’re in, but where Starbucks HQ is, you have to have at least one break prior to/by the three hour mark. So f the shifts. Tell them you came to work and on your schedule there is also a break and that you’re going to take it. -a shift who believes everyone deserves breaks.
kristis3233 2 points 1y ago
Former SSV & heavy smoker here, I want/ need my break! When I stepped down I did notice that last tens were not prioritized. I think only one ssv actually said “if you want it just let me know “. No one ever ask’s. But again I’m a smoker so I’m all about it. The way I understand it & I can be wrong, is that it’s not mandatory. It’s just another privilege. The only mandatory break is a lunch, again I could be wrong. But hey we all deal with the Karen’s of the world. So an extra 10 minute break can do a lot of good
celloqueer 2 points 1y ago
Might not be a legal issue bc some US states don’t have basically any protection on breaks. But it’s for sure a company issue. Talk with your manager.
Haygirlhayyy 2 points 1y ago
Don't work at Sbux but I'm an Assistant Kitchen Manager at my restaurant and I will never take a break if it means I can let my hourlys get their breaks.
nicolelynnejones 2 points 1y ago
As an SFM, that is cruel. Let your SM know. Those 10s belong to you.
horseman-0bvi0usly [OP] 2 points 1y ago
thank you!! SFM tho? what does that stand for? sorry haha
nicolelynnejones 2 points 1y ago
shift manager, it’s a position that only exists in massachusetts, it’s closer to ASM
jams1015 1 points 1y ago
What are the additional duties/responsibilities that make it more like an ASM role?

I was under the impression that the difference in titles was due to how Massachusetts' courts interpreted federal laws around tip pools, banning anyone who directs fellow employees at work from being dealt into the pool- leading to the necessary title of "manager" over more ambiguous titles like "leaders" and/or "supervisors". Did they tack on extra managerial responsibilities (interviewing, hiring/firing, write ups, sitting through all those boring-looking Zoom meetings, etc) on top of you guys not getting tips?! That seems so fucked up. :-/ I hope that's not the case!
nicolelynnejones 1 points 1y ago
Yeah it’s due to the whole tips lawsuit. Which I never understood because we are on the floor just as much as baristas these days, and I think the Sbux labor structure was way different back then, but I digress

And yeah that’s about right. We do all that stuff plus inventory, scheduling, a bunch of ops and cash handling stuff, the daily orders and the weekly york order, etc etc we are supposed to be doing recruiting as well but the staffing situation is so dire that my SM has been doing it (and doing a great job)

It’s not too bad bcuz the pay is significantly more than SSV (from what I’ve heard) around here it starts at $18 and goes up to like $25 but usually they hire people at an even $20
horseman-0bvi0usly [OP] 1 points 1y ago
oh, thanks!
IndividualCorner1586 2 points 1y ago
Routinely no but only on occasion it gets busy sometimes so it’s understandable but if it’s on more than one occasion talk with a store manager
horseman-0bvi0usly [OP] 2 points 1y ago
yeah, it’s every shift in which we get a lunch too, except for shifts with one SSV who does give them every time.
beanslinger9715 1 points 1y ago
i’ll skip my own 10s and even my 30s if i’m short but i never EVER skip a baristas break
poopylilbutt 1 points 1y ago
I’m showing this thread to Howard.
ryzzostar 1 points 1y ago
In FL they are mandatory unless you wave it so they at least have to ask if you want it. There were times that we were so busy and our ssv still told us to take it and would stand in for us so we could take them. I'm grateful for the ssvs I had because they made sure we got every break and 10 to make sure we got a drink or something to eat during our shift and made sure we were OK especially on days when we were super slammed.
piratedashel 1 points 1y ago
As a SSV and long time employee, it’s just coffee. Everyone gets every single break they are entitled to, including myself. If not for any legal reason, but because if you take care of your baristas, they’ll work hard on your shift.
miakodank 1 points 1y ago
Nah we always get out tens even if someone has to bar ring for 10 min
TheDialingRain 1 points 1y ago
Your SSV shouldn’t be skipping your tens at all. I personally will skip my tens and only take my lunches but all the baristas always get their breaks. If it’s a common issue at your store go to your Manager or DM
cat-lover420 1 points 1y ago
my shift gives it to mean like 40
mins in so i don’t have to take it later ;-;
Better_Dust_2364 1 points 1y ago
I work at a target Starbucks and most of us skip both of our 15s we would get for an 8 hour shift by choice. We take them if we need them to drink water or use the restroom but other than that we just don’t have time to waste because there’s only ever 2 of us. we take our 30 tho 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think it would be illegal if your team lead pushed you to skip it but if they people make that choice themselves that’s their choice.
SilenceGaia 0 points 1y ago
Absolutely involve your SM. You are entitled to a break. If there is a scheduling issue and you are routinely understaffed — this is your SM’s (or ASM’s) problem to solve. This is not your burden. Unfortunately it becomes a burden to all when we are understaffed, including your SSV. If it appears you are running into this situation ~3 hours into your shift, go up to the supervisor and ask them directly about when you will be taking your break (and reiterate how many breaks you are scheduled for). Like if you are working a long shift and get a 10,30,10 - say, “I haven’t gotten my first ten yet, about when do you think that can happen?” And if they talk about running your half (as though your ten is getting skipped) say, I can wait until you run someone else’s break for that, or I can wait another hour, I’ve been working this position for a while and just want to get my ten out of the way ASAP. Don’t be afraid to create boundaries and be direct. If this is expected of you within your store, a toxic culture is being created and you do not have to uphold that. Be the change even if only for your own sake! Good luck.
SilenceGaia 0 points 1y ago
Honestly I don’t believe there is any standard for when you should even ask. I would just go by what the schedule says or what feels right to you / when you need a break. If your fellow partners want to be overachievers denying themselves of breaks, that has nothing to do with you. It should actually make it easier on the SSV to give out the few breaks that are expected lol. Make sure you’re raising your hand saying you want/NEED one. It’s yours baby! I really hope this resolves easily for you.

dafuq??? that’s literally like them stealing 10 minutes of pay from you, fuck that.
