training vs coverage shifts (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by HistoricalLeave9587
hi all, i started working may 22nd and completed 2 full weeks of training. i had this past week off for a vacation i had scheduled before i got the job and informed them. this week i am back and scheduled as training the entire week (shifts labeled as training in partner hub). on june 21st i have my first shift labeled as coverage so i assumed that meant i would be done with training / working on my own not with my trainer, and i have 3 shifts on coverage, and then on the 27th my shift is labeled as training again and i have 2 more training shifts that week. is that normal? i’m just confused on when i’ll be officially done with training and what the difference even is between training and coverage then. thanks in advance!

this happens to me all the time and i’ve been a barista for like 8 months lol. what i was told was that there is only a certain amount of total hours that can be given out, and labeling shifts as “training” instead of coverage doesn’t count towards those hours so managers use that when they need more staff but are limited by those hours.

Are they at a different time of day? My first time opening and first time closing were scheduled to training even though I was done with training so I could learn the task list that went with both. And when I got skill checked I think it was considered training too.

no, they’re all the same shift times roughly since i’m only working mornings! also, what’s a skill check? ive not heard of that before and now i’m stressed if i’m gonna be tested LOL

It’s generally the manager just checking you remember how to make some basic drinks. Like a latte, or a refresher or a frap. It shouldn’t be super hard. And if you do forget it just means someone will need to work with you more before you get put on bar without supervision.

Not all stores do these but they are supposed to.
