thoughts? i never realized so many baristas had an issue with customers ordering water lol(i.redd.it)

I don’t mind making waters
What I do mind is when the customer -waits until after I push through the order to ask for a water -orders their water at the window :) -bothers the barista at the handoff for a water 🙂
cats_with_tentacles95 points1y ago
Yeah exactly, I don't mind waters if they print out with every other drink. It interrupts my flow and slows our times to get them on fly
SnooShortcuts857015 points1y ago
I understand that which is why, whenever i’m on the window, would take the second to grab the water myself. I feel like it will take more time to tell my bar person and for them to find a quick pausing point to get water than for me to slip right through.
kaynist3 points1y ago
yeah i do the same + i'll do it if i'm on front register and someone comes up just for the water. but still at the window bothers me cus they could have just ordered it at the screen rather rhan waiting and adding another 20s to their dt window time 😪
candycanes123462 points1y ago
I’d do this and my shift would yell at me for it and tell me I was absolutely not supposed to leave the window. 🙃
canidieyet_ [OP]23 points1y ago
me too. but i’ve heard people say “idc how dehydrated they are, i’m not giving them a water” because they didn’t buy anything else (as in, they order at the register but front person says no) 😬 so it just makes me wonder why it’s such an issue
thebestdaysofmyflerm50 points1y ago
>but i’ve heard people say “idc how dehydrated they are, i’m not giving them a water”
Those people are assholes.
cookiemonstah878 points1y ago
Probably the same sort of people as the ones at a previous job of mine, where we were outdoors all day in all weather, who would deny fellow employees water and insisted they couldn't give us anything for free and we couldn't purchase anything while on the clock. Some got fired for it because... not sure if law or company policy, but God I hope it's illegal to deny an employee water, especially while working outdoors
ladysingtheblues20 points1y ago
Yeah sometimes I wonder if they don't realize the water's free and are trying to sneak it by us
brokenleftjoycon148 points1y ago
I’m only bothered when they order it at handoff and it’s one of my biggest pet peeves. It’s disruptive to baristas and rude to other customers, especially during a rush.
cookiemonstah8757 points1y ago
I hated when people asked anything of me when I was on bar. It was always simple things like extra sugar packets, a straw, another cup to use as a sleeve, etc. Took 2 seconds for me to grab, but it made me irrationally annoyed every time
SnooShortcuts857037 points1y ago
This is why i lowkey try avoiding eye contact with customers on bar. The instant our eyes meet they always have a request because i’m the one making drinks.
leopardsocks9 points1y ago
It’s why I wear a hat at work lol
cookiemonstah873 points1y ago
Same!!! Only one other partner in my store wore one. I loved my hat, made it really easy to stay in my little coffee-making world without risking eye-contact and the resulting requests
On a related note, I do not understand the people who will stand directly in front of the espresso machines while we work, as though it's a Chipotle and they want to follow their burrito down the line. Back the fuck up! You're not even at the right machine if you want to see your drink get made, that's the drive-thru station!
Life_deep_85 points1y ago
I get mad when they want customized water with strawberries or something and than get pissed when it’s rung up as a custom tea
heytherecomputer15 points1y ago
“I’m so sorry, I know it’s lame! But it’s company policy.” I do this line with the really annoying customers about a lot of things they complain about (“I know right, they raised the price on my favorite drink too!”; “Man, with these gas prices?!”; “Ugh, I know right?”) and they almost always shut up and just order it anyway.
Life_deep_8 points1y ago
I once explained why too and then they said they understood and then called and complained lol
heytherecomputer5 points1y ago
Some people, man. I hate this job 😭
canidieyet_ [OP]54 points1y ago
like, yeah. a big order for water is annoying but TBH i’d rather make 4+ ice waters than 4 fraps. almost every comment on that post is people complaining about making venti/trenta waters 😬 if labor is such a concern just punch it in the POS and write don’t make on it.
fuwaldah39 points1y ago
Honestly, I don't care. It's not that hard. If I'm not pouring water, I'm just making some other drink.
Antique_Ad_375229 points1y ago
I’d say the only time I mind is when the customer refuses to ORDER the water. Instead they come up to me at the bar and ask for it, it drives me absolutely crazy. Customer, PLEASE, I’m in sequence 😭😭, YES you can have a water but order it with your drinks please!
emileeavi3 points1y ago
I'm guilty of this (with my old coworkers when it's not busy) I'll walk up to them and go "I'm so sorry -person whose working- can I please bother you for some of that cwispy refreshing H2O" Though I'm pretty sure they don't care since they know me, ans I usually order something but sometimes I'm just dehydrated.
Antique_Ad_37521 points1y ago
Bahaha yes!! Me and my coworkers do this to rile each other up, and of course I’d never say no to the customer who wants water. It only bothers me a little when we’re busy.
mylegalusername29 points1y ago
Reminder; our paper/plastic cups are single use and should **not** be reused for sanitary reasons, even if it’s just another water during the same visit. The reusable plastic cups (venti size) are order-able on IMS (remember to order lids/straws too). Retail cost is only $3-4.
Tallgothwife5 points1y ago
Genuine question. How is a plastic cup single use, not reusable. Its the same type of plastic cup you get with a drink at taco bell or the gas station. I reuse them and wash them until they break. This isnt early 2000’s plastic waterbottles leaching toxic chemicals into the water event. Our DM encourages us to reuse our plastic starbucks cups🤔
mylegalusername9 points1y ago
I think they call them single use more for a health and safety reason. They’re obviously usable more than once, but they explain in one of the training modules not to use them more than once, even for water.
I’m sure part of it is also either to push reusable merch or ensure customers aren’t bringing these cups back in. Or baristas putting used or dirty cups back. The paper ones fall apart for sure. I’ve learned as a SSV, when it comes to food safety, it’s all about preventing the prevention of anything.
It’s also worth mentioning, Starbucks also says even the (assume iced too) hot reusable cup (few dollar one) is only good for 30 uses. I’d assume this is degradation of a coating inside or breaking down the plastic easier into the drink.
SelocAvrap7 points1y ago
It's because we can't trust nasty customers to properly wash their cups
thebestdaysofmyflerm5 points1y ago
>It’s also worth mentioning, Starbucks also says even the (assume iced too) hot reusable cup (few dollar one) is only good for 30 uses. I’d assume this is degradation of a coating inside or breaking down the plastic easier into the drink.
Source? That's insane.
mylegalusername3 points1y ago
It was one of the training modules. I forget if it was called reusable cups or what, but it was one of the semi-annual ones along with flies, sanitizers, ice handling, etc. The 30 times surprised me too, which is why I remembered it. I’d assume esp. with hot liquids the plastic would become more porous over time.
I’ll see if I can find it on the hub and post a picture next time I’m in.
Tallgothwife3 points1y ago
Me over here reusing my same trenta cup for water for the last 2 month. Cup is perfectly fine, I just grab a new lid every week or so because they are made like garbage and wont stay on after a week.
zzid2d211 points1y ago
I have run my plastic cups and lids through the dishwasher on the top rack for several years and they're still usable. Granted I have a Bosch and it doesn't use heat to dry! But I can't stand the thought of throwing them away. They are my "family dinner" cups.
persona-21 points1y ago
I think it’s more of the environmental impact.
HintonsCorner20 points1y ago
I moreso wish there was a self service for it. Like i don’t believe I’m charging someone for water on a scorching hot day and they’re homeless. But if there was a self serve water area that would solve the unnecessary workflow disturbance
heytherecomputer6 points1y ago
Like damn, what happened to water fountains? 😩 Just set up one of those bottle fillers that they have in gyms so that homeless people can have some water.
kidneybean147515 points1y ago
I don't mind making them, but I despise two things about them. One, when they ask for them after ordering, throwing your rhythm completely off, and interrupting everyone. Drives me nuts. The other and far more important thing I hate is the waste. We produce enough waste already, you don't need multiple large plastic cups every day for water and/or ice. Just carry a water bottle like a normal person. (I have the same feelings towards straws- the lids are made specifically so that you don't need them)
cecilbdementd8 points1y ago
For me it’s the people who want one everyday with their mobile order, I carry multiple water bottles around everyday especially in the summer so I don’t see why other people can’t either
heytherecomputer2 points1y ago
TBF our water is crisp as fuck and tap water/regularly filtered isn’t very good in a lot of places. Used to live in Washington State and even the tap water was tasty. Now I live in AZ and I refuse to drink it because you can see the minerals coming straight out of the tap.
oddbitch1 points1y ago
Are we allowed to refill people’s water bottles for them? Because I’m also concerned about waste but I live in AZ and our tap & brita filter water is absolutely foul. If I could just bring my bottle on my days off I would love that.
Icy_Gap698013 points1y ago
Honestly I think water should stay free. Usually when someone orders a tall water I give them a bigger size just because it’s crazy hot outside where I am.
brianiwabuchi8 points1y ago
ALWAYS PUNCH IN EVERY SINGLE THING YOU MAKE, INCLUDING WATER! It helps your store get hours.
heytherecomputer2 points1y ago
Thank you for this, I actually didn’t know that!
Affectionate_Fart8 points1y ago
There will be numerous different ideas and opinions. Some people care about the earth and want to preserve and prevent pollution through different means and ideologies like reusable cups, reusing the same cup and whatever. Some people don’t want to charge people for water because it is a base need. I can see ringing them in so no one “cuts” in getting a drink/ruins sequencing (because as a bar person with 2 partners in the store it can be frustrating to stop every other TikTok drink for a venti ice water) I think if you have reusable, great! Let’s do it, but I also think it would be environmentally better to reduce the number of cold cups we throw out into the landfills each day because at the end of the day, I like sea life, clean water, and not having to think about some fish being killed because of a plastic cup. I also think we should have a self-service water filter like numerous gyms and hospitals have so people have “free access” to it instead of having to ask someone for water but that is a person opinion.
krty987 points1y ago
Water is a human right and it’s fucked that fellow baristas want to charge for it.
canidieyet_ [OP]4 points1y ago
that’s what i’m saying 😬
drinkliquidclocks6 points1y ago
It’s just stupid and annoying, I work in a mall so like every other person just wants a water. My store had to set a limit 1 per person because stores would come in and ask for 10 waters with straws and drink carriers everyday.
I don’t actually care other than it’s a little annoying, but they could get water literally anywhere else instead lol
LaurabelleBabe6 points1y ago
I will mind less when we get a better water tap at my store. Mine screams at me 😂
platonicbae5 points1y ago
i don’t think it’s that serious honestly. i have no problem making a water for someone and i’ve never been annoyed by people just asking me for one at handoff either. it’s hot as hell outside. people be thirsty.
sten454 points1y ago
I found so much peace once I stopped caring. Corporate wants you to say yes, getting upset only bothers you, if you choose to not care you are free.
Jewicer4 points1y ago
it’s lame for them to ask for water last minute. it’s even lamer for a company to make you pay for water.
heytherecomputer1 points1y ago
Water is a basic human right!
mushmushmushmus4 points1y ago
my only issue is this really rude guy that orders two venti iced waters everyday
kaynist3 points1y ago
i dont mind at all but i do wish people would order them at the register. its fucking rude when a customer walks up to the bar when ur in the middle of a rush and you have to stop everything right then and there just to make a cup of water ahead of all the people who actually stood in line to wait for their drinks.
moldyhotpocket3 points1y ago
im just glad people are drinking water
RubySapphireSage3 points1y ago
I say “can we put it in a”.. and offer a different size cup of stock is really low with Trentas in our store so we hold onto them as much as we can .
kikisoats2 points1y ago
water is a basic necessity… if you get annoyed, refuse to give people water, or think people should be charged for WATER, check your privilege
kristis32332 points1y ago
Thing that gets me is when we’re busy AF they walk in see that line & walk up to the bar asking for all these water’s 🤬. In my sweetest voice ever I say” sure, but you gotta get in that line and order “ 😈
random132462 points1y ago
water takes ... a few seconds to make a cup of. And usually I can ask the person taking drive thru orders to grab them for me so I can focus on the longer drinks. It's not bothersome to me, though I do agree abt the waste in this situation
Canadiansbux2 points1y ago
Working in a grocery kiosk having all the grocery store employees come for water is super annoying. They always come when we are busy and expect to get before everyone else. Even though there is a water cooler located in the staff room. My issue is they ate rude and entitled about it. Not to mention I always run out of ice because they all want extra ice and we just have the small under the counter ice machine.
Apprehensive-You52612 points1y ago
I think we should be charging a cup fee for the water tbh. We still have to work to get the water for them and half of the customers at my store order the water at the window not with their order and because we don’t have someone specifically for hand off whoever is in dto is doing hand off and most times making their waters too. It’s just overwhelming. The Starbucks at Disney the water should be free or just refill charge because most people are at the park all day and you can’t really get ice anywhere but even in that case I always bring my own cup because personally I prefer not to add to the death of sea turtles because plastic. So I think we should charge a cup fee that way atleast people would bring a reusable up to ask us for water.
Another thing that irritates me and this happened yesterday is a customer ordering a tall or grande tea or refresher no ice then when they get to the window ask for a trenta cup of ice. I know what you’re doing, you’re gonna pour the tall drink into the trenta ice cup and get basically a trenta drink for the price of a tall. There should be a way we can charge them for a venti atleast also it’s extra annoying because those people always ask for the cup of ice at the window 🙄
feisty3141 points1y ago
I've really got my fingers crossed that the next upcharge Starbucks will add will be a "no ice" fee. I don't mind light ice, but the product usage in a no ice drink is significantly higher. Maybe we could stop raising prices on everything if we just raise prices on the people trying to cheat the system.........
iindiieecindiee2 points1y ago
I don’t mind the waters but I hate getting yelled at by a customer who has to get a dome lid because we ran out of flat lids. It’s not my fault that everyone wants water cups.
Calm_Water_37122 points1y ago
The only water we allowed back in my day was the Tall or Grande. Anything bigger we charged the refill fee.l
Calm_Water_37121 points1y ago
Wanted to point out the store's reason for this ...no matter how well stocked we are in a tourist town like East Hampton and any surplus of cups we kept in stock at an off-site storage unit you could still run out quick. Unless you are bored and look at the BOH computer during an order day the larger cups are expensive, don't know if that has changed. Also, to lose people to go on a drive to an off-site unit to get stuff in the summer and slammed is not always a good idea if you are going to be away for a really long time. Thank goodness if we ran out of milk, apple juice, or lemonade the supermarket was right behind the store.
Not gonna lie, but if you have a grocery store that does points with incentives.. volunteer as the store tribute just so you can get those points. If they send you on a Costco or BJ's run for stuff for the store and you have a high tier membership use it to get that end of year membership bonus.
Markedsoultheif2 points1y ago
The only thing that irritates me about waters is when they’re the only thing the person orders and they give us attitude about it. You’re literally ordering just water, wasting your gas to sit in our drive thru for water. Calm tf down and speak up. Otherwise if the only thing you order is water and you’re nice about it I do not care and will happily make you your water.
himemsys2 points1y ago
What do you care? You don’t pay for the cups…
ladysingtheblues3 points1y ago
One day we all will
himemsys-1 points1y ago
What do you mean?
canidieyet_ [OP]1 points1y ago
i heard some stores are testing some “borrow a cup” feature. personally, i think it’s stupid…we should at least offer free talls if they’re going to start charging for water
I think all plastic cups should be recycled, that's a totally different environmental topic.
I'm talking here about customer service. A customer comes in and asks for a couple of waters and the barista freaks out like the cups belong to her or something. Stop taking it so personal...

fyodors_anemia2 points1y ago
y’all are allowed to give out trenta ice waters ??
canidieyet_ [OP]1 points1y ago
they’re able to be rung up on POS so yeah
ProfessionalRock79402 points1y ago
Okay but when they get them every day. Or trenta cups of ice every day. It's so damn wasteful 😞
ProfessionalRock7940-3 points1y ago
I honestly think that's more the point of the post. That the dude gets 4 twice a day and doesn't reuse
dayahorne1 points1y ago
I'm a licensed store and we charge 0.25 for venti grande and tall, and 0.50 for a trenta.
SubstantialTree71 points1y ago
I live in a desert, it’s been in a heat advisory warning for the last week or two (above 110 during the day), so I have absolutely zero problem with handing out waters. I would like it if they order at the register, but honestly at this point, when we have time, we’re basically asking everyone in the lobby if they need a water while they’re waiting for their other stuff
leeblissy1 points1y ago
I don't mind it tbh. we're a drive thru only store and sometimes someone will come thru the drive thru and ONLY ask for water and if they do it while we're busy I weep with joy 😭 thank you for ordering objectively the easiest drink possible and nothing else 🙏🙏🙏
canidieyet_ [OP]2 points1y ago
RIGHT like you don’t even have to pay them out. i wish more people came through for just water, i feel like it’d help drive times sooo much
leeblissy1 points1y ago
EXACTLY especially as its getting hot out (its getting over 100f where I live) I waaaaay prefer people coming in just for water than frapuccinos
emileeavi1 points1y ago
My store had water cups. When people asked me for waters I got the cups, when they go "the bigger one" I went "sorry but since we keep having shortages, I can only give you water in the water cups, but if you'd like to order something I'd be happy to make it for you" 🤷🏼♀️
martinifather1 points1y ago
I never mind making waters of any size. Water is a human right. Yea it’s a little annoying when they order at handoff or the window but it’s literally no effort at all
v_is_4_violet1 points1y ago
Imagine living in Arizona where asphalt temperatures reach almost 160 on a daily basis. Imagine you're unhoused and Starbucks is the only place that won't refuse you for free water.
urscreenamesuks1 points1y ago
My DM got to the point where only tall or grande waters were allowed. Nothing bigger.
sheep_heavenly1 points1y ago
I hate it at bar. I always send them to the line, even if they ordered already. It's a disruption that needs to be handled by encouraging the desired behavior.
Joranaxis1 points1y ago
I don’t care if you order water. It takes less energy than any other drink, so I’m happy to make them! What I hate is custies coming to the drop off point to order it. Orders get put in at the register. Just because the thing you ordered is free, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to stand in line for it. More so in fact considering everyone else is paying for my service and you aren’t. I happily tell them I’ll make it when I get to it. Which usually means making any and all drinks i’ve prepped first. You’ll get faster service if your drink is actually in the queue tbh
heytherecomputer1 points1y ago
Personally don’t mind unless they order it at handoff every single time. It’s hot as hell where I live and we have a law saying that no place of business can charge for a water cup, regardless of whether they ordered something else. I have a bias knowing that staying VERY hydrated is the only way to survive the heat where I live, so I get that other baristas may be more annoyed than I am about it.
Sometimes people just forget to order it at the register/DT speaker, me included. In that case IDGAF, it’s just water, you need it to live, and our water is crisp as fuck 😩. And yeah, it breaks up the flow, but at least for me in my cafe store, it’s really nothing more than a slight inconvenience. The only time it bothers me is if they do it every single time. But then again, some people are just not thinking about it that way because they’ve done it countless times, and at that point it’s up to us to I guess “train” the customer in some way.
I guess something that would help is asking repeat offenders something like “Any waters/sugars/whatever today?” at the register. If they don’t get it after a few tries, just kindly let them know that it makes it easier for everyone for them to order it at the register rather than ask for it at handoff. Throw in some bullshit about “we have to put it in the system for cup inventory and it makes it easier and faster to order all of it at once” and most reasonable people will be apologetic and probably remember it next time.
potterlyfe1 points1y ago
I had a customer that EVERY DAY would order her regular drink then 1 trenta ice water and 3 trenta cups of ice. She puts the ice cups in the freezer at work so she can have ice water later in the day. I asked why she doesn't just make ice cubes since she obviously has a freezer. She said she likes how our ice tastes. Like seriously?! You'd rather waste 4 plastic cups daily then have to make your own ice?

jamesbeast2151 points1y ago
I don't mind giving out waters EXCEPT we had some asshat who would come through the drive thru every day and all he got was a water like COME ON do not do that
humiddefy1 points1y ago
I don't mind making a water for someone if they wait in line like any other customer. I hate when it's a group or one person that wants 5 trena waters, like fuck off you're getting grande unless it looks like you're doing manual labor.
Broad-Flounder-49711 points1y ago
I don’t mind it so much because I love a water with my coffee, but it’s definitely HOW they do it. At the window can be super frustrating because it slows down the flow of things (but that’s true of any addition at the window). I wish they would only ask for an addition if it was obviously slow, but eh.
When I’m on bar, I usually pass the water sticker to someone else like an asshole lol. I have sonic brain. I must be fast. Water is NOT FAST VIBES.

are y'all a licensed store? corporate stores don't charg
Main_Friendship_66231 points1y ago
Licensed store baby we can do what ever the F we want
random132461 points1y ago
true but y'all also don't get any of the benefits or protection corporate stores do. My partner got ruthlessly bullied at a licensed store and because it regulated not by corporate, they did nothing
cmgriff19991 points1y ago
My issue isn't with water or even the use of the cup for it. I have an issue with the just insane number of straws we go through when people ask for them with drinks that don't require or need straws. It's a small thing to be petty about, but like damn just sip your drink.
Tvdrone161 points1y ago
I don't mind doing water at all, just ready to start charging for cups. If they're gonna tie labor to it then I want every dollar I can get lol
Torirock101 points1y ago
it doesn’t bother me. some ppl r just dicks
ladysingtheblues1 points1y ago
Lol we had this one guy who got fired for attendance issues and ever since has taken to coming through the drive thru daily for nothing but a trenta water and some moping.
LaurdAlmighty1 points1y ago
I dont mind when they ask for water at all, in fact in a line full of frapps i welcome it. its only annoying when they're in drive and you give them everything and then they dont leave and stare at you and go "Can i have a water??" you knew you were thirsty for water BEFORE

ittybittybakerkitty0 points1y ago
Water is fine as long as that's not all you ordered. For me the real irritating thing is the cups of ice. I have a regular who just gets two trentas of ice and she wants that thing packed
_circuts0 points1y ago
I could see 4 trenta ice waters every day being annoying But I don't mind ths ice water.
itsalatte-3 points1y ago
