Have your or anyone you know ever started as a Barista partner & then moved into corporate?(self.starbucksbaristas)

So I justbstarted as a barista. I’ve had a Communications degree for 5 years, And since graduating was only able to get retail/customer service jobs. Pandemic unemployment allowed me to take on 2 unpaid internships doing social media marketing. I live in a very small coastal town in Florida so any marketing jobs are highly competitive, and have really affected my mental health feeling I wasted my time getting a degree, but now working for Starbucks does make me feel like maybe after enough time with the company, I can find something in the marketing department at corporate. Has anyone ever been able to get into corporate as a barista? I know it’s still super challenging and I’m not trying to get my expectations high, but I just want to see if it’s doable at least?

My old manager worked her way up from barista, now she's gone off to corporate in Chicago to do starbucks design stuff where they create the cafe interior design. They hired her on to do photography which I think she didn't have a degree for, just experience, but she really likes it.

I think so? Our DM was with the company for 16 years, started as a barista and then just kept moving up until he became a district manager. I think it’s possible

That’s so awesome! I guess what I’m trying to say by corporate tho, is more of like into a different department that isn’t so much of management more like going into marketing, or public relations, or legal team etc lol

ohhh okay i understand! I’ve never seen it happen but I’m pretty sure if you’ve got the degree you can apply on the careers section on the Starbucks website? wishing you luck

Thank you! This won’t be anytime soon, I’m still in training and just started learning cold bar so I wanna at least be at my store for a year or two, maybe make it to ssv to show some type of management experience

A fellow barista with a comm degree, I can very much relate. I truly have no idea what I was thinking majoring in communication. As a first gen college student, I really didn’t have anyone to guide me on what were good majors to pursue. Honestly though, I’ve had a marketing job and actually prefer being a barista over that. Overall the whole communication industry just isn’t for me, and it’s definitely affected my mental health as well by questioning my past decisions. Also people kinda make me feel silly when I say I majored in communication, I feel like it’s another word for undecided.
Anyways, I’d say give yourself some time as a barista but keep your eye out for Sbux corporate jobs and go for them! Wishing you all the best :)

Thank you!!! I’m amso a first gen college student, my father passed when I was young & my mom didn’t even graduate high school. It really does make me feel a lot better reading this, knowing I’m not the only one. Thank you for your insight, so far I’m really enjoying it. My team is great and my SM seems very caring and protective of us! I deff will keep my eyes open too!

I know quite a few people who moved from the retail side of things to corporate. I used to live/work in a suburb of Seattle, and many of our partners (including my old SM) got hired at corporate.

Someone from my first store promoted from SSV to a corporate position, I think in a similiar field! It's definitely doable. Being an inside hire will probably give you an advantage, even

I mean I’ve looked at doing partner relations (which is HR) after getting my degree. I don’t see why not, knowing that you know the ins and outs of Starbucks. I’ve also seen people go into finance from ASU (they had a psych degree). It just depends on how you’re able to sell your skillset.

Anything is possible, but the one person I know who got hired at corporate literally applied to different positions for two years before finally getting a position, and they were just as if not more qualified than you.

Yeah they probably were more qualified, it’s just hard trying to find more experience in my area, but thanks fir letting me know it’s possible!
