Should i suggest my coworker stars working weekdays or nights instead of weekends. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Sickoflike2247
My coworker has been working at starbucks for about 4 months now and she had really bad social anxiety and anger problems. She’s really nice but when she it get busy it gets hard to work with her. During the weekdays it’s okay since we have lots of people on the shift. But on the weekends there’s only 3 people including me, working all day. I have immense sympathy for her and her struggles but it can get really hard to do our jobs on the weekend when she has panics attacks and has to take multiple 20 minute breaks in the back.
She gets really overwhelmed on bar and registers and hates it. so to try and accommodate we decided that she could do CS the whole day. But whenever i went back there was really nothing done and she would be sitting in the corner on her phone. By the end of the day we still had so much to do in the front and back. My shift lead and i had to stay and close we didn’t finish till 4:30 and the store closes at 2. Closing regularly only takes like 30 minutes. She left as soon as we closed with a large pile of dishes for us to finish and lots of preps to make.

I do really feel bad for but her it can get really stressful for my shift lead and I when we’re constantly left with all the work at the end of the night. I just don’t think it’s would be a good environment for her to work on the weekends where the store is the most understaffed and just as busy as a regular Monday mornings.

Not to be mean but I think she's taking advantage of you guys being too understanding. If she knows it can get stressful it's not very considerate of her to leave you guys so much work or to not do her part after you've acomodated for her. It's not worth it to prioritize someone else's mental health over your own sometimes, mostly if they aren't in any way appreciating it.

This is very odd to me…I know everyone is different, but personally my anxiety makes it incredibly difficult for me to be inconsiderate towards others. I get anxious if I feel like i’m doing anything other than work while on the clock or if i’m perceived as not working hard (I also have social anxiety). Just in my experience, anxiety makes you more aware of others because you’re constantly thinking everyone is judging you and therefore you want to prove yourself and be helpful. So her openly being on her phone when she’s presumably supposed to be doing CS tasks doesn’t really track to me. But I don’t know her life, of course.

I feel like Starbucks is really not the job for her if she can’t stand doing most of it and won’t even do the one aspect that requires zero interaction with customers. She should get a job doing back stock at a grocery store or something where she can just listen to her headphones and work in solitude. You’ve been more than accommodating ♥️

thank you. i plan on talking to my manager on monday when she gets back and i really hope they can find a good compromise.

It seems like she might not mentally be in a place to hold a job right now or doesn’t realize how integral her contributions are. Either way, I hope you guys sort it out and everyone ends up happier because of it in the end! Good luck!!!

This. If she has so much social anxiety and is given the opportunity to not have to speak to people, then she should be working really hard to excel at CS.

Honestly, it sounds like they're taking advantage of your understanding. Starbucks doesn't sound like the right job environment for this person and they should consider moving on.

Ultimately, unless she has a documented accommodation she should be expected to be willing work any position most of the time. I would say to talk to your manager about what you’re seeing and how it seems to be affecting the team, because what to do with that is their call to make - not yours. Starbucks isn’t for everyone

that’s what i was thinking. i’m glad i’m not actually coming across as inconsiderate.

Why are there only 3 partners working all day on weekends?? 😭
Sickoflike2247 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
because our manger tells everyone new who is hired they don’t have to work weekends so then they of course opt out of it. and no one on else want to work them but we have to stay open apparently, so we just make do with 3 people.

You should also opt out of weekends.

Reminds me of a girl my friend told me about who used to do that but she was faking it. Not sure about ur coworker. This wasn’t at Starbucks but at a clothing store (chain store) the managers just left her be because they don’t know what to do. That girl would stand in a corner and just scream or talk to herself ever so often. She left after two months and I think she was just laughing about it.

Honestly. If she is having attacks etc, she shouldn’t be on her phone. Customer support can be an at ur own pace kinda job so if she can’t help or whatever then sorry, no sympathy for her. She doesn’t seem like she can contribute to the workload and would need to be let go. Sorry, no sympathy when it comes to affecting everyone else in the store.
