How about y’all just promote your people from within instead of bringing in more shitty outside management that doesn’t understand Starbucks values and doesn’t know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino (: (i.redd.it)

i also feel like it creates a toxic work environment when you bring someone in that doesn’t understand the flow of the starbucks, to lead the workers that already have their own system in place
iStealSharpies [OP] 77 points 1y ago
My store literally went to SHIT after we had a new hire manager come in. A lot of Regular customers don’t come in anymore, everyone’s burnt out & a lot of tenured partners quit. It’s literally so sad to see.
minty-hitler 16 points 1y ago
Same thing here! Now we have a shitty sm that complains that we shouldn’t be running out of egg cups even if we haven’t gotten an order in five days. It’s also great that he can’t do ANYTHING on bar, is the slowest at ringing up customers and constantly needs help, and can not keep up with warming even when it’s slow.
iStealSharpies [OP] 12 points 1y ago
Your SM gets on bar and reg??? HA, my SM has never even touched the POS system. And on bar, she just pulls stickers, lines them up & walks away. At least your SM is trying 😭😭
minty-hitler 3 points 1y ago
my sm doesn’t even go near the bar, i’ve never seen him pick up anything. but he tries on reg and warming so i’ll give him that
Enough_Raise_7167 11 points 1y ago
We must work at the same store.
dlcksuck 8 points 1y ago
6 months ago we hired an outside hire ASM and it did exactly that. Created so much drama and stress for everyone. It got so bad that the ASM went on leave and eventually just dipped out and quit
BiochemistChef 131 points 1y ago
Why hire internally when you can get someone who isn't able to help on the floor and doesn't care about the sbux struggle so they go by the book
iStealSharpies [OP] 45 points 1y ago
The gag is, my outside hire doesn’t even go by the book or care about standards. It’s literally disgusting. All our standards are out the window. My old DM didn’t give a shit about our gripes either. My new DM seems a lot more promising though… I just want a good work environment. These days I feel like I’m dragging my feet to work.
Salt-Bet-4603 3 points 1y ago
I’ve gotten 3 outside hires fired because they knew I wanted to promote so they had me working on my “development” just to have the DM tell me I wasn’t ready 🥴 found out they were taking credit for everything I did to make themselves look good and once I stopped doing their job they didn’t know how to handle it. They wanted to do everything by the book but didn’t even understand what that meant themselves 😂 the most recent one we got rid of wasn’t allowing me to order any new equipment or enough product for drinks because she wanted that bonus, once our stupid DM got rid of the manager she found out that almost 200 hours of premium pay weren’t paid out to us. In Chicago if we go 15 min over our scheduled time we get paid for the entire hour and this idiot wasn’t giving us those hours. Keep in mind we had already went to our DM about how this lady was homophobic, always misgendering, scheduling people outside of their availability, scheduling students during their classes so they could quit on their own, had partners working off the clock and always left the store early because she had “meetings” 🥴
luvduvbunny 30 points 1y ago
I 100% agree!!

I had a superstar shift who applied to be store manager. The DM made the excuse that there were no managers available to train him, so he would have to wait until one opened up (even though our district needed to fill like 5 manager positions).

Time flies by and guess what? Our district hires outside managers instead of my superstar shift! So he quit and was upset that we waited so long to be passed over by people who have no clue about Starbucks.
kidneybean1475 17 points 1y ago
This is my store, but with Shifts. We have a good (albeit fairly hands-off) manager, and like two good shifts, but since the other good ones we had have all left over the last few months, we've been getting all these new shifts who have never worked at a SB in their lives. Makes working so much more stressful, as they range from so hands-off and clueless to overly anal over everyone and everything under them. It baffles me because we have two or three baristas who would make excellent shifts, but hey, I don't make the rules.
iStealSharpies [OP] 10 points 1y ago
It all comes back to money. It’s cheaper to hire from outside most of the time. Every poor decision a company makes always has to do with money. It’s so sad when a good barista gets passed up on an opportunity that could benefit a store just for them to bring in a clueless leader. I hate to see it.
gkgreek 5 points 1y ago
Why do you believe that it is cheaper to hire from outside? Usually internal candidates have an advantage because they're a known entity, and it's cheaper to hire them because they have a smaller learning curve and can add value much earlier than someone new to the company.
And I believe that equal opportunity employment laws require corporations like Starbucks to consider both internal and external candidates for open positions. Advertising is part of compliance, not necessarily an endorsement of external candidates over internal candidates.
iStealSharpies [OP] 2 points 1y ago
While I agree that logically it would make more sense to hire internally because the internal hire will know more about the basics of the business and needs of corporate, it typically is cheaper to hire someone from outside. Let me put it into perspective for you this way: a tenured SSV is at their max cap on pay. Let’s say it’s 25 dollars an hour (I think that is what the max cap is but I’m not positive so don’t quote me on that) and assume this same SSV works full time, so 32+ hours in Starbucks world. That brings them to about 800 a week at 32 hours. assume this same SSV works every week, that brings them to about 41,000 annually give or take. So now this person is offered a salary position for ASM which is a TLA, so they’re typically guaranteed a store if they do well. This will mean they work 40 hours a week, and their annual salary will likely jump up to a certain number above 41,000. Now 6 months pass in the TLA ASM program and they are granted the SM position. That will mean another raise for this same tenured partner. So going from 41,000, with 2 raises, that will *likely* put them over 50,000ish annually. (Of course this all depends on regions & where you live.) Where as they can hire an outside hire manager with a base pay of 45,000. This is a tale as old as time for companies that like to cut corners. Outside hires tend to be cheaper to pay annually.

And yes I understand equal opportunity laws means that it’s an equal opportunity for both outside and inside hires, but as of recently, there are only more and more complaints on this Reddit about outside hire managers. It doesn’t feel very equal at this point. There are plenty of willing and capable supervisors that want to grow with the company and move up the chain, but they are denied time and time again only for them to bring in someone who doesn’t know a lick about coffee. It’s just very sad to see sometimes.
Data_Dame 5 points 1y ago
Outside hire almost always gets paid more. And by a wide margin. It costs more to get someone to quit their current job to hop over. Source: I am an external hire.
brokenleftjoycon 10 points 1y ago
My first SM was an outside hire that knew absolutely nothing and never learned. They could use the ovens and that was about it. Absolutely awful when we would be short staffed. My current SM started as a barista and that was the best change. They know everything and understands the quirks of working.

SMs should know how to work every position before working as an SM. They’re effectively useless else wise.
iStealSharpies [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I AGREE!! They should know every single position before even being handed a store.
Old_Specific_1233 9 points 1y ago
truth! from what i heard their requirements to even be considered is really specific and odd, and i wonder if it's accidentally catered towards outside hires 😟
ladytaters 5 points 1y ago
"accidentally" my foot. It's set that way because promoting from within costs more. You can hire an SM for way less than actually promoting would cost, in both time and salary.
Old_Specific_1233 1 points 1y ago
yeah i you're right! 😅 i think i default to seeing the best in things and accidentally may have been a poor word choice
Assiqtaq 6 points 1y ago
Then you find a job in another company, and they screech at you "where is the loyalty?!" It is what it is.
Wspitsamanda 4 points 1y ago
no literally there’s a trainer at my store who deserves to be a SSV but instead my manager hired someone who has never worked at starbucks and has no idea how to make anything
iStealSharpies [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Disgusting. That makes me so upset.
Wspitsamanda 3 points 1y ago
literally, i just moved from another store as an SSV so i’m doing a direct transfer, but she’s never worked at a starbucks before and has no idea what she’s doing. she can do the admin tasks but when it comes to taking orders, making drinks, being on the floor? she’s so slow because they’re training her from the beginning. she’s only been there 2 weeks and they’re about to tell her she’s done with training and ready to be an SSV but she’s really not. i get that it’s a learning curve, but that Trainer deserves it so much more and things would run so much more smoothly if he was, i feel like.
philosopher_cat_lady 4 points 1y ago
Oh, they understand Starbucks values. Make money. And connect with the customer for some reason
iStealSharpies [OP] 4 points 1y ago
My outside hire SM thinks connecting with customers is awkward & unnecessary.
philosopher_cat_lady 1 points 1y ago
God bless them
mekayla96 4 points 1y ago
Because everyone is leaving lmao they don’t have anyone to promote
Zealousideal-Star448 3 points 1y ago
Didn’t Howard literally talk about promoting from within the store in his stupid speech back in March?
fredforthered 3 points 1y ago
I haven’t worked at SBUX for 14 years and I still remember how bad it was when we got an outside SM. He was eventually shuffled elsewhere or let go, but I later saw a beloved ASM working at the large bookstore chain in the licensed SBUX so they must have passed ASM up again. So dumb.
rlogranite 2 points 6m ago
Outside hire managers are the worst. Not many have lasted very long in my district. I don't know why they hire them when so many shift supervisors work so hard to get promoted
rosegoldhiips 2 points 1y ago
Same goes for DMs. The only good DM I've ever had was promoted through the ranks from barista and I'm SO SAD SHE'S NOT MY DM ANYMORE 😞
BeardiesRule112 1 points 1y ago
The worst DM I’ve ever had started off as a barista 20 years ago. Literal Satan himself.
jondgul 2 points 1y ago
Exactly why I left the company
swallowingpixies 2 points 1y ago
:) yeah, how about that? There’s plenty of people who want to promote :)))))))))) why are u doing this Starbucks? Like, lol why??
sero5074 2 points 1y ago
SAY 👏 IT 👏 LOUDER!!!!!!!
spooks_away 2 points 1y ago
So Starbucks does not do promotions traditionally anymore (I'm sure someone in the comments has already said this) you need to find your store location online and apply for promotional possessions
Decent-Marionberry63 2 points 1y ago
I am a three year SSV and I am working towards becoming a Store Manager :) my district has a lot of potential when it comes to future SMs so I guess we’re lucky we don’t have to hire outside as much
Brief_Coat6526 2 points 1y ago
Every store in my area that has an outside hire manager Is a shit show
Ok-Change2879 2 points 1y ago
I feel like internal hires need to be implemented more cause one of the store managers at my store got hired and actually showed her porno to a barista.
iStealSharpies [OP] 1 points 1y ago
What the actual fuck
Necessary_Low939 2 points 1y ago
Definitely promote within. I can’t stand outside hires. Except for my former sm, he’s kinda cool
darkwolf523 2 points 1y ago
100% agree with this.
JunipherStar 2 points 1y ago
Our store manager was an outside hire, literally the worst. The store is going down in flames in less than a year 😭
CapableArtist123 2 points 1y ago
This though! There are shift leads being hired externally which is really really frustrating because they don’t understand the mechanics of the store and the people within the store so it’s hard to build a a relationship and a reputation of themselves. There are so many other partners that can develop into a shift/are more than capable to.
sdmh77 2 points 1y ago
I used to have managers that had been with the company who for at least 5-10 years to be managers. The bosses above them might be outside hires though🙄 I don’t think people stay with the company long enough to hire within anymore. I worked for 4 years am/pm but never promoted. I was studying to be a preschool teacher — should have stayed at Starbucks 🙄
MemesandSpeech 2 points 1y ago
I've been my manager of my interest to become a shift, but she would constantly get new partners and in which months later, they would fold. WHY ARE YOU MANAGERS SCARED TO PROMOTE ONE OF YOUR OWN!?
AuntieRia1128 2 points 1y ago
It’s also not really fair to bringing someone in who doesn’t*Know* you know? Cause when you *know* Starbucks you *Know*… idk. Like just surviving there for a prolonged period of time, it’s like being In battle… and it’s a bit of an insult to the troops when you bring In a civilian with no experience or knowledge of the enemy to boss them around!!!

I worked at a store that hired people with no experience at all to be shifts, but I waited over 2 years to be promoted. I was being overseen by someone who didn’t even know how to make a pink drink, how long pastries were good for, I had to Help her! And honestly I felt so bad for her, she was Sooo overwhelmed and so undertrained. She quit within a month! And that was Just a shift manager!!! 😱😱😱
iStealSharpies [OP] 2 points 1y ago
!!! This!!!! I had to personally tell my sm that we can’t warm lemon loaves because the icing can catch fire!!! And she still put it in the oven!!!! A customer also asked her the difference with a flat white and a latte and I had to step in to explain. It’s actually frustrating!!
AuntieRia1128 2 points 1y ago
😬🤦🏽‍♀️🤯😳😤🤬😩
adolfop_420 2 points 1y ago
This is just disgusting honestly bring people from near by districts if you are in need but don’t ever hire brand new green beans into management this will literally cause an actual fire one day… someone is going to do something crazy and then y’all gonna run to try and twist make it look like Starbucks did everything right and cared when we all know you dont
Ecstatic_Math_3839 2 points 1y ago
This is total BS, how dare them
Sad_Impression_3276 2 points 1y ago
How about doesn’t the difference between a Frappuccino and cappuccino 🥲🥲
No-Chocolate-6828 2 points 1y ago
Preach
fuwaldah -4 points 1y ago
In order for a company to be successful, they need a mix of internal and external hires. Starbucks has always and will always primarily promote from within, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't also look for talented candidates externally as well.
RobotProphetWrites -1 points 1y ago
Because none of us want to be managers.
iStealSharpies [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Speak for yourself. I want to be THAT manager. The one that listens to their baristas. That fights for more hours & that will throw an apron on and get on cold bar in the middle of a rush. There’s not enough managers that care. I think that’s the problem.
Comfortable-Plane944 -19 points 1y ago
I mean apply?
iStealSharpies [OP] 12 points 1y ago
I did? My district is in dire need of SMs & they just keep bringing in outside hires. It’s actually infuriating.
Undidiridium_ 1 points 1y ago
That's super odd. We've been trying to hiring from within our district but nobody atm wants it so they have to hire outside.
iStealSharpies [OP] 6 points 1y ago
There are a lot of SSVs in my district interested in the ASM program and even an ASM or 2 in my district but they won’t give them the stores… it doesn’t make any sense at all. We did just get a new DM that made her way up from barista and she said she does not ever take in outside hires, so I’m hoping there’s some change soon. It’s literally so frustrating.
