Will I be in training only 4 hours a day? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Blanc-tu
Just got hired and my manager said that I start training next week, and said that it would be 4 hours a day. Does that mean I have to go home right after and can't work a straight 8 hours?

I got hired awhile ago, but the time it took for the criminal background check and the onboarding information to come through, has made it about 2 weeks already. Does it usually take this long to start working at Starbucks?

Depending on your store, I definitely wouldn't expect to work 8 hours daily. A lot of stores love scheduling 4 hr shifts, or the dreaded 5 hr 45 min ones. Outside of shift supervisors, I'd be inclined to say a full 8 hours reliably is pretty rare.

because you only get one ten minute break instead of the ten and thirty you'd get if your shift was only fifteen minutes longer

So they just revamped the training program to 4hr blocks with your trainer (goes into effect tomorrow), but there’s also supposed to be practice time afterwards of 2-4hours, making a longer shift

As far as taking a while to start, schedules are made 3 weeks in advance so that’s a factor, and the background check process can sometimes have delays which is another factor

it might be the availability of your trainer as well that only allows you to train for 4 hours a day. it could also be the pace that the SM chooses. when i started, i had 30 hours for two weeks straight, all ranging from 5-8 hour shifts, but my SM curated that for me and my trainer. i was mostly accommodating to my trainer’s schedule.

and the background check usually takes a while anywhere you get hired, just because it’s from a third party and sbux wants to make sure you are still in good standing with the company. from when i got hired, i didn’t start working until about 2-3 weeks later due to the background check and onboarding i needed to complete before i started

my training schedule is a mix between 4hr shifts, 5.75hrs, and a couple full 8hr ones. it depends on your trainers availability and yours. In general, baristas are part time workers so 4hr shifts aren't uncommon.

Wow, I thought I would be able to work full time. I guess I should start looking for a 2nd job :/

If your store is short staffed or any near you are you will after training. We have a few (like 3-4) partners who want 35-40 a week. They offer to pick up shifts and help in close stores. They always manage to get the hours they need.

depends on how old you are i think. my SM told me the trainees i trained who were minors can’t work more than 4 hours so that’s why it’s 4 hours for them (but then i’m confused because i see these same trainees working 8 hour shifts?) but i trained other baristas for 8 hours (only one of the training days tho)
