Came into work and the SSV on had to leave sick so my SM asked me to run the floor until the mid shift got on and it went great!! Had so much fun and can’t wait to get promoted one day (hopefully soon!)

Why are they asking you to run the floor without shift pay? That’s not ok. That’s exploitation.

She did not make me she told me it was totally optional I saw it as a learning experience and a great thing to talk about in my interview to become a shift whenever that happens

Running the floor is actually listed as one of the activities do when transitioning from barista to SSV. Take some really good notes on today so when it comes up in your interview for SSV you are better able to speak to why you were successful.

Still taking advantage of you… you seem young and it’s a really good lesson to learn right now to not let people do that. This company will work you like a dog if you let them.

Thanks for looking out for me! I think we just see it differently

No problem! I’ve been here for almost 4 years, just speaking from personal experience :) good luck with everything!

If your 18, Definitely ask your SM if there are positions for SSV open at you store and if so, apply and ask for a interview. They will not offer your the position or suggest that you apply, being proactive is the only way to get it. I would try asap so you can promote before the raise cause I don’t think they will promote to many unless absolutely Necessary once it’s at 19 an hour

I’m in California so shift pay is already 19 and I’ve been in active communication with my SM about applying when an available spot opens!
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points1y ago
If you’re really invested j would push to be get the training done even if there’s not an open position. That way you’re ready as soon as a position opens up
5AV1OR [OP]1 points1y ago
I didn’t know that was an option to do! I’m not sure if my manager would go for that because of the application rules now (don’t know if it’s just my state) but for any spot they have to leave the application open for 2 weeks and so if a shift applied to transfer to our store etc for an open spot they would most definitely get it over me :( but I’ll definitely ask about this!
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points1y ago
It may or may not be an option I couldn’t say for sure-best to talk to your SM
Right-Individual-1342 points1y ago
I'm happy for you! It is a great learning experience. I was in the transition of being a SSV but I hadn't had my training yet and this one day my SSV let me run the floor while they were on lunch since they were going to go leave the store and it felt good to be in charge for those 30 min so I know how exciting that must felt for you. Good luck on your interview!!

U can get in trouble for this. A food license holder needs to be in the building
Edit: at least in nyc it is. Not sure about Cali, as I read that’s where ure from
5AV1OR [OP]2 points1y ago
Here they have to be present in the building which my SM was
Necessary_Low9392 points1y ago
Oo ok. I thought there was none when I read the post because it sounded like ur sm didn’t wanna run the floor because they weren’t present.
5AV1OR [OP]1 points1y ago
My bad I definitely could have made that a little more clear lol
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
Np👍

I am glad you were able to handle it, but your SM should have shut down the store. Can’t not have a supervisor for more than 30 minutes per policy. Even your SM cannot override that.
I hope you get the position soon though!
5AV1OR [OP]2 points1y ago
My store manager was still present in the building she just wasn’t able to run the floor
Have_Donut2 points1y ago
Oh perfect then! Honestly probably was doing that to see how you handled it then with you becoming a SSV in mind. My SM did that a couple times as well before I became shift!
5AV1OR [OP]2 points1y ago
Sorry not unable, she had a lot of stuff going on (she is managing another store atm that was having some big issues) so it would have been difficult
