Tired of getting chewed out because I can’t use the Restroom, eat and drink In just ten minutes lol
esaeklsg163 points1y ago
I feel that. Even aside from mental recoup, just body upkeep eats up the whole break for 10 minute breaks.
BlindHIllCorpse [OP]203 points1y ago
Working me for fucking 5.75 hours so you don’t have to give me a lunch and I only get 10 minutes to breath during those near 6 hours of a coffee zombie apocalypse
KaoriLikesWatari44 points1y ago
Lol people at your store buy coffee? Can’t relate
strangeyeena64 points1y ago
Can I get a vent ice iced white mocha with 9 pumps wm, extra caramel drizzle, and vanilla sweet cream cold foam? 🥴
TheAdobeEmpire25 points1y ago
I NEEEEEED MY CAFFEINE HAHA
aGrapeInUtero2 points1y ago
Oh dude I wish people were this simple most of the time at my store.. this one is basically simple at this point lol
Wspitsamanda6 points1y ago
i took a mobile order today: Venti Vanilla bean frap, 8 scoops of vanilla powder, Heavy Cream, and 8 shots🙃
g_pvp_32 points1y ago
not the 8 shots… i would have went on my break
Starbucks_IVF_MAMA32 points1y ago
It's even better when you clock out late and end up working 6 hours instead of 5.75
Intelligent-Ad127313 points1y ago
Those 5.75 closing shifts that alway push you over are the worst 🙃
Nawtydaddy69691 points1y ago
I have 9 hour shifts with only 20 mins breaks 😭
Imaginarybluntallday6 points1y ago
The fact I live in a state where 5hrs is the requirement for a lunch is a blessing. I pray for all y’all with that BS 6hr rule.
Rainbowcorgi22441 points1y ago
I also live in a state that has the 5hr rule for a lunch am I thinking of the same state as you or am I just thinking or New Hampshire
rf-bitch1 points1y ago
Man maybe I should’ve moved back to New Hampshire then😭
imathrowayslc134 points1y ago
You don't need to use your break to use the restroom, you can go whenever you need to, and should make a point of not going on your break.
diphenhydranautical46 points1y ago
right, i always take my 10 and then use the restroom after my 10 minutes are up if i have to. no ones ever had an issue with it
rascallytrashbergs27 points1y ago
When I started, when my trainer and I were sent on break, she went to the bathroom and said “my ten starts when I’m done”
minty-hitler16 points1y ago
my 10 starts when my butt hits the seat
starlessXeyes18 points1y ago
Former partner here, I used to do this and was asked by some managers and shifts to use the bathroom during my breaks. I just said "okay :)" and kept on not doing it. Not like I'm taking 10 min pee breaks, this is a minimum wage job calm down lmao I do not get paid enough to even begin to give a fuck. Not sorry.
Pretty sure that wasn't even legal for them to request of me.
333k2229 points1y ago
i just appreciate when ppl either use it on their break or not DIRECTLY before or after, like i get if u have to go but i don’t love when you obviously waited til after ur break is up then told me you were back then went to the bathroom,, i wish it was 15 mins tho
Kmsss14 points1y ago
SAME. As a shift it’s so annoying. Take a bathroom break whenever you want for a reasonable amount of time. Or just ask me to take a breather for a few. I’ll give it to you. But don’t you dare tell me you’re back from your break, and you just need to go to the bathroom. Ugh.
We have a few issues with a certain barista taking 15 min bathroom breaks. It’s a fine line between jiffy the fuck up, and do what you need to do.
Have_Donut6 points1y ago
SSV as well and same. A few particular people always throw off the break plan and push everyone else’s breaks back since they want to do their break and then take a 10 on the toilet right after
disco_covfefe4 points1y ago
agree. I am willing to be flexible with break length, I don't want to time people to the minute, but when they go to the bathroom, come back, spend several minutes chit chatting and making their food and drink, and THEN say "ok bye be back in 10"...
Emkitcat47 points1y ago
Sounds like you have a tummy problem now and need more restroom breaks 😉
PercyGabriel112941 points1y ago
On top of this problem, I've even had borrowed partners ask me (I'm an SSV btw) where our "break timer" is and that absolutely blew me away. Like has that idea popped in my head after a barista was on their 10 for effectively 20+ minutes? Yeah, I'll admit it. But would I ever actually implement it? GOD NO! It is so counterproductive. It would not only lower store morale, but it is such a result of a power trip that everyone would hate anyone who would implement it. Us as management have to understand that we are all humans. We forget to check the time (I have ADHD so this is one I strongly relate to), we have to use the bathroom for longer than we thought, we don't want to burn our tongues on the flaming hot melting cheese of the Impossible Sandwich, we need some time away from customers. Like damn, I hate hearing all these stories on here about problems that could be solved by having SSVs and SMs that treat everyone else like they are humans. Ugh, sorry for the rant
princesskittyglitter13 points1y ago
> I've even had borrowed partners ask me (I'm an SSV btw) where our "break timer" is and that absolutely blew me away.
Every store I've worked at had one lol
PercyGabriel11297 points1y ago
That's crazy. The main store in my district does it because they are the second highest volume store in the state and they try to be very efficient (which when I've volunteered to work there, I noticed that there are soooo many better ways for them to accomplish that without making their baristas time their breaks to the minute). I hate the "if a few people mess up, everyone gets punished" mentality. Mainly because I was in the military and it got old very fast. Just talk to the people who aren't following the rules, communicate the effects of their actions, and if they continue to break that rule without a good reason, disciplinary actions are made for that kind of thing. But I hate when good workers are punished for others' faults.
Kmsss4 points1y ago
Dude. WHAT?! Respect goes a long way. I’m not going to time you unless you have an issue with tardiness and then your ass is getting talked to EVERY time your late till you don’t do it, or you get fired.
Kmsss6 points1y ago
I should clarify, more than 5 extra minutes is late.
Teftthebridgeman37 points1y ago
Im pretty sure we used to get 15 minutes when I was working there,
Just enough to chain smoke 3 cigs and pee my pants on the way in
imeanitpeanut5 points1y ago
Are you in Canada? 10 minutes is all we get in the US.
creachurcritter3 points1y ago
Huh? Im in the U.S. and I get 15
imeanitpeanut7 points1y ago
What state? You must have better labor laws in your state than the rest of us, because they give the minimum required by law.
steamedpigeonmilk2 points1y ago
We get 10 in NH too.
Becquerell1 points1y ago
Are you under 18? Minors get 15
Luna_Raccoona10 points1y ago
Not at my store they don’t lol. 10s for everyone
steamedpigeonmilk5 points1y ago
Am I? No. The minors at our store also get 10s.
creachurcritter1 points1y ago
Oh just checked it’s a state law
creachurcritter1 points1y ago
Nope. Nearly 19
Teftthebridgeman2 points1y ago
I was in VA where its will to work which sucks but we got 2 15s and a 30s minute lunch
welcome2mybog1 points1y ago
i’m in VA and we only get 10s ;(
Teftthebridgeman1 points1y ago
Rip
monzoink11 points1y ago
Just go to the bathroom right away when you get told to go on your break, and then technically start your break timer when you get back
CoffeeChesirecat3 points1y ago
That's exactly what I do. Took me long enough to figure it out. I don't waste time, just do my business, come back, and set my timer.
Chrisxp0910 points1y ago
Yea no that's literally one thing I hate about how our breaks work depending on how soon you get that ten you can be on bar for hours without a single break till you leave
steamedpigeonmilk4 points1y ago
Lately, my SM has been sending me on my first and last 10 an hour early and it drives me crazy because I know I’m likely not going to be moved to another station until either I leave or my half, whichever break I’m taking. Three hours can fly by, but it can also be a long time to be on bar by yourself when it’s constantly busy.
Salt-Bet-46039 points1y ago
I always let the partners get their food/drink and once that’s ready then they can take their breaks (I’m a shift) and I always tell them to use the restroom on company time not their breaks 😂 we have a shift who does this herself but gets pissed when partners do it 🥴 does a whole lot of complaining about partners not coming back in time from breaks but takes a 40 min lunch because she’s on the phone. Tries to justify it by saying she has kids, like yeah tell me how the conversation about that party had anything to do with your kids.
Broad-Flounder-49713 points1y ago
I have three kids and I don’t take too long lunches 😒 didn’t know I could just because I have kids.
steamedpigeonmilk3 points1y ago
Oh yeah, we have a shift like this too except it isn’t kids, it’s her beloved smoke break. She’ll go out multiple times and be gone for more than her given time, no one bats an eye, but if one of us is in the bathroom too long, she’s bitching about it.
Booshminnie1 points1y ago
Time to bring it up
EyesOpenedWide318 points1y ago
Never pee or shit on your time always do it on Starbucks time!!
myredditusername9195 points1y ago
im from corporate and moved to a tarbucks (who has 15s) and let me tell you, that extra 5 mins makes a HUGE difference. I actually feel somewhat refreshed after my 15. tens are practically useless
TransposedApophenia5 points1y ago
Sounds like the type of thing a union could bargain for 🤔
iiiimagery4 points1y ago
I don't use my breaks for the bathroom. I have IBS and cannot wait until my breaks and if I used it for my break I wouldn't have one. Tell your manager this is essential for you
JEXTZZ4 points1y ago
Yeah i never get to finish my beverages on my breaks. Waste of me using my partner number honestly. We need at least 15 minutes
peepeepoopaccount4 points1y ago
Yes they should be 15 min!
sparkleblarkle3 points1y ago
We have an SSV who yelled for an employee who was on her 10. She yelled, “WHERE ARE YOU? IT’S BEEN 11 MINUTES!” Same SSV came into the backroom as an employee was finishing her food and she said, “hey, how long is your break? Oh that’s right, it’s 10 minutes.” 😑
Ropinjafro2 points1y ago
It definitely sounds like you have a shitty manager because mine is nothing like this. If you need to use the bathroom, you can go even if you're not on break- you just gotta let someone know. And typically, my management team (shift leaders, manager, etc) have this unspoken rule where you can pop your meal in the oven and while you wait, you can probably stock up a few cups or forks so that your break time doesn't officially begin yet and they're not sticklers if you come back a minute or two late.
Personally, I'm kinda glad I don't have to take a lunch break. I think it's dumb that I have to sit there for 30 minutes and not get paid, I'd rather work it all the way through and get to leave 30 minutes sooner. I also get really tired after taking a 10 and sometimes hate that I have to take a break cause then I just really don't wanna go back to work. I also have ADHD and my brain functions differently than most people, so I'm def not speaking for everyone here lol
Lucius_Ds2 points1y ago
I mean I get two 10 and a lunch I’m not complaining but I work mornings so…..
Improvmomolyfe2 points1y ago
It was so off putting when I started with the company from Target. Over there we had 15 minutes. And for what? This job is definitely more physically demanding than most other retail and we still receive very limited breaks.
Nalin902 points1y ago
$1 Via collective bargaining we can fight for better pay, better working conditions, and longer breaks.
Tallgothwife1 points1y ago
Except they said plainly in the weekly update they “cant guarantee they wont take away healthcare” from unionized stores, not giving those stores any raises at all. Plus someone at my store leaked that our DM was told to threaten store closure to any store that unionizes or files for a union vote. Its not that simple anymore
Nalin902 points1y ago
That's illegal and union will help you fight if you are fired or have your store closed from unionizing. Also a union isn't going to take away your healthcare, only starbucks will do that.
Tallgothwife1 points1y ago
And starbucks has been doing illegal stuff for the last 7+ months, its going to continue to get worse before any legal action actually is taken against them.
Nalin902 points1y ago
Legal action is already being taken against them. By all means, if you want to roll over and let starbucks fuck you that's your choice. Some of us plan to fight for our rights.
BoomSoonPanda2 points1y ago
Bargain & unionize
xovilloxo2 points1y ago
is this only in the states? i’m in canada and we get 15 minutes
aliceinimagineland2 points1y ago
You only get 10 min breaks in America??😳😳
changbinsomnia2 points1y ago
that- but at my store they also count getting your own drink and food as part of the 10. sometimes when i get sent on my 10, i have to get something for a customer or finish something. so by the time i get my stuff, i have like 7 minutes left, then i have to become a human vacuum.. and thats even worse if i decide to go to the restroom. its just annoying
Holiday_Pop86472 points1y ago
Same! I was told “your break starts once your shift says you’re on break” and I’m like?? So they tell me I’m on break and I have to finish whatever I’m working on, get food and a drink, and use the restroom all on my break time and that’s not even including actually getting to sit down and eat.
changbinsomnia1 points1y ago
this one!! some of my shifts will time the 10, like set a timer. or is they send us at ex: 2:35.. they'll be like "i'll see you back here at 2:45" and im just thinking "can i take one breath before you start timing me"
djdementia2 points1y ago
yeah we really should get like a 15 minute break after 3 hours of work. No matter what, shift sent you early on your break and you still got 3.5 hours left? well then you should get a second break 15 mins before you leave.

Go to the restroom when on the floor. You’re allowed a potty break at any time.
aGrapeInUtero1 points1y ago
Don’t use the restroom on your 10. Do it other at other times during your shift. Incorporating breaks into the day is a whole task for your shifts and, depending on the store, anything more than 10 minutes just isn’t doable. If you’re not showing up after 10 minutes, you’re messing with the plan, which isn’t supportive of your shifts. It makes their job harder. Have warming prepare your food (if you’re getting a good mark out for your break) before leaving for your break if possible. Our store runs a tight ship but it makes the job more enjoyable for everyone.
heyyyitsbee1 points1y ago
LITERALLY one of my shifts was like tapping her watch being like “um come on” i was like … i got here at 5 am it’s 8:30 i need to maybe eat something and pee and have some water pls give me a break
casprinjuniper1 points1y ago
Just keep using your timer. When you sit down start it and then go to the bathroom after.
If they keep botching come back for two minutes and then say you have to use the restroom. 🤷 I guarantee they don't want people doing that. My store had a very short period where they were teaching breaks and lunches. After a while it just stopped and people are still being responsible. (It's not irresponsible to take care of yourself).
ProfessionalRock79401 points1y ago
Yeah 10 minutes is rough, but at least we get two of them usually...
dirtychai02181 points1y ago
we get 15s in MD
Buttafly_360-1 points1y ago
Honestly, i thought it was just me, for you(every barista) as a barista a 10 min break is not enough😑 I'll say a 15 min break, but to the ones that are on the floor and DT while your on a break 10 is enough..especially if y'all at peak and need all hands on deck to be fair💯💯 cuz even a 30min break isnt enough..wish it was an hour lunch break but 1. Thats an hour gone from ur paycheck and 2. In Starbucks, like I said, shit gets busy fast asl and you may need all the partners you can to serve all them people! Especially in the Summer & Winter time..massive rushes constantly 🤦🏽♀🤦🏽♀ but I hear you OP💯💯
Broad-Flounder-49719 points1y ago
Sounds like they need to hire more people if they can’t afford to give people breaks. Or maybe stop fucking stressing about drive thru times and let baristas move at a slower pace so we can put love into each drink
Buttafly_3601 points1y ago
Yeah I feel u💯 not sure why I got a downvote tho 🤔🤷🏽♀
Broad-Flounder-49712 points1y ago
People can interpret things poorly. Maybe thought you were saying you were against breaks (which I know you aren’t, you are just being realistic; there’s never enough labor to cover for everyone to get all their breaks and ten minutes never feels long enough).
Buttafly_3601 points1y ago
Oh..sheesh and right? My point exactly💯💯 thats all!!
