Should my promotion be taking this long? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by metrokid_98
It’s been almost 4 months of being told I’m going to be promoted to SSV, but here I am still a barista.

March: an SSV at my store got promoted to ASM and thus got reassigned to a new store. After that, my store manger and some other SSVs approached me about applying to fill her spot.

April: I was told that it was between me and another barista. My manager was basically waiting on approval from our DM to open the application and interview process.

May: the other barista she was considering mysteriously quit without notice. However, things were on hold because our labor was too high and my manager needed to fix it.

June: my manager is saying “there’s not enough movement happing with our current SSVs” whatever that means. We have 5 SSVs and my manager wants to hire a 6th because when one of the shifts is sick or calls out, the store is f***ed. But I guess since the pay raise is coming up we’re switching to this “shift compliment” thing where there can’t be more than one SSV is on the clock at a time. So basically since she can’t hire a 6th SSV, she’s trying to get one of them promoted to an ASM or maybe transfer one of them.

It’s just frustrating because my manager tells me almost every day she appreciates me and wants to promote me. Plus she and I talk about how some of the SSVs aren’t great at their jobs. I don’t think my manager has any bad intentions, it just seems like she doesn’t want to fire or demote any of the current SSVs. I’ve been at the store for a year a half, im a barista trainer, and like I know I’m qualified. On top of that I have a second job as a server where I make way more money, but it doesn’t make me happy and the hours are rough. Working two jobs is killing me and I barely have enough time to myself, so if/when I’m promoted I could leave my second job and live my happy little gay life working 30-40 hours a week as a shift.

Has anyone else had to wait this long? I’m open to any advice.

If you really want to be a SSV don’t wait on your manager. Check to see if there are openings in your district and apply for it. I’ve seen managers do this to partners in my own store over the years and the partners who were just waiting on the SM were never promoted.
