I’m only getting scheduled 4 hour weeks. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by No-Tea2679
So, like the title says, all of a sudden I’ve gone from 15-20 hr weeks to 4-8 hr weeks. I’m a 368*****, just passed my 3 month mark at the siren. I’m a college student, so I can only do part time, but obviously I need more than 4 hours to live! I can’t even afford a full tank of gas with that. I haven’t gotten the chance to talk to my manager yet because he doesn’t allow us to contact him outside of his scheduled 40 hours and we need to make an appointment with him to speak to him. On top of this, my coworkers are generally mean to me and treat me like I’m incompetent:(. The whole situation is just making me feel bad. I’m considering going back to my old job, it was good money and they worked with my schedule, (but clearly I also left that for a reason). Any advice? :(

First off I wanted to apologize on behalf of us SM’s out there. Someone of these managers I read about have absolutely terrible communication skills it boggles my mind!!

Secondly, I know this will sound scary since you’re so new, but you should contact your DM! When I’ve trained SM’s, I tell all of them the same thing. Whether we like it or not, we are salaried. We are not paid for 40 hours of work. We are on the clock 24/7. Your DM needs to know that he refuses to be contacted when he’s not there, cause that’s crazy. What if there was a robbery? Death of a customer or partner?? A flood? These are all things that have happened over my 11 years and you bet your ass I picked up my phone to help my team. Every SM should.

Sorry I went on a tangent cause managers like yours make me so mad. We represent this company, and when a manager is representing it badly it just makes me so pissy.

As for your inconsistent hours, I would definitely(when you get the opportunity) talk with your SM and see what’s getting in the way of him providing more hours to you. It could be as simple as your availability and you adjusting it slightly. I would also ask him to borrow you to nearby stores, that way you can pick up shifts on the app whenever you want. Last piece of advice is to ask around your store. See if anyone wants to give up a shift! It’s summer and I bet some people would love an extra day off!

The DM will just tell the partner that the SM has ever right to not be contacted outside of work. In case of emergency is one thing, but SMs are allowed to have a life.

I would quit or transfer out. That store sounds ridiculous.

it’s only been about 2 days since i posted this… i contacted my old manager at my previous job and i’m already back on the schedule there! i have an upcoming vacation, and if my sbux manager doesn’t approve it (he said he’s “unsure if he can make it work”) then i’m putting in my 2 weeks and going back to my old job full time :)
