Am I learning too slowly? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Tricky_Conclusion996
So for context I'm 16 and this is my first real job. I've had 3 training shifts so far and I'm already expected to know all the drinks and do hot bar by myself during the day (not during peak but we're always a relatively busy store) I haven't messed up any orders yet but I feel the need to get CONSTANT clarification. The drink says 2 pumps of vanilla syrup? Let me ask someone nearby if I should put 2 in. And because of this, I end up going at a snail's pace and other people pick up the slack for me. At the end of my shift I was told by my trainer I needed to go home and re memorize the drink recipes because I was asking for too much clarification. I feel bad now because I made people wait for their drinks just so I could ask a certain drink I was making was actually correct. And to make matters worse I still don't really get the sequencing as we only went over it for like, 20 minutes. So, I end up making one drink at a time. Should I be worried about my progress so far and constant need to make sure I'm doing it right?

Just from reading this alone I knew the answer was NO. It is not okay that you're expected to have drinks memorized and be on hot bar after 3 shifts.

I was on register for like 5 training shifts before I touched anything drink related other than pouring coffee. I'm a month in and I'm still not expected to have everything memorized. I know this isn't the standard experience either but the point is, your trainer is moving too fast with the process of training you.

It's going to take you a while to learn and asking for clarification is a great thing. Be wary of the person training you and if they become irritated with you because you're "slow" then run because the pressure will only get worse and it's not worth it.

Also, have you been on register up until the recent shift you're talking about? Because I don't understand how you can learn to do register and be on bar and memorize the drink recipes within 3 shifts.

I did register on tuesday this week as well as the warm foods and today i was back on hot bar. Before that I did customer support and made cold drinks + hot

Trainer here and I tell my trainees 3 months until your confident. Unfortunately it’s kinda normal to be thrown in but to be told to memorize? Never. Asking for clarification is how you learn to make drinks, and even after becoming a shift I struggle with remembering things. Don’t stress yourself too bad :)

Fr like i just got this job recently and i feel like i was just thrown out to do bar. Its hard and scary but just do your best and it will get better. Hang in there

My advice is honestly to go to a different Starbucks. No trainee can be expected to memorize all the drinks AND to successfully solo the bar after three days of training. Do not feel bad about asking the questions, because even slowing down to ask questions is faster than having to make every drink twice.

And if you're wondering, we almost ALWAYS have to pick up the slack for trainees. It's just how it is. The rest of us are faster because we're doing everything more on reflex and memory, whereas you're still working everything out.

All that being said, it never hurts to work harder on your own improvement. You mentioned sequencing being hard, so maybe bring it up again and tell them you don't understand it. It doesn't sound like you're getting much support there, but I think you should try. If nothing else, you can honestly say you tried your best.

Man I’ve been working since last year and barely get to do bar

bar is definitely not something that you can master in like 3 days💀 im only 3 weeks ish in and im still messing up drink orders of whether it’s iced or hot so it’s good that you’re reading the stickers and clarifying before handing the drink off! i think bar is something that you have to do repeatedly to really “perfect” it so don’t worry you’ll get the hang of it soon and good luck training!! -from a fellow 368

This list is extremely incomplete and all over the place and unorganized so only take this stuff for granted and the info that is correct but it’s what helped me boost my confidence in making drinks
MiSfIt0Q 2 points 1y ago
your being trained your allowed to ask help your trainer is not that very helpful but besides that if you do want help with remembering at least I’ve created an entire note about entirely Starbucks it’s not perfect some stuff is missing but it gets the point across it will be a separate comment
