Working at Starbucks! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CooperBwoah
Hi everyone!

So I've been working at a super busy drive thru Chick Fil A for the past 11 months, and I'm starting to feel burned out. The management is really poor, and we're severely understaffed. I'm thinking about leaving and working at a drive thru Starbucks instead. For context, I'll be a senior in high school this year and school resumes in August. How accommodating is Starbucks towards scheduling. I would only be able to work 8-15 hours during the school year. If I got the job in late July, would I be able to learn everything before school starts? What positions are there in Starbucks? How has your experience been at Starbucks. What's the drive thru environment like?

starbucks is really accommodating to high schoolers. my store doesn’t have minors work over 4 hour shifts and you don’t close on school nights :) lots of partners work low hours and it’s fine, especially if that’s all a store needs. It usually takes 2-3 months to feel like you know most of everything. positions include: front register, warming/oven, “customer support” which is restocking, brewing coffee, cleaning, etc., drive through order/window, and actually being a barista. ideally 5-8 people on the floor. drive through environment is being quick and courteous and really getting to know customers aka connecting w them. there’s A Lot of regulars. Management really pushes for low drive through times though.. can be annoying. you really gotta be the type of person that can talk to everyone to work here and also be persevering and curious.

Also, while there are all those positions, you don't get trained on just one. You'll get trained on all of them and after a while, you'll most like become proficient at most if not all.

It should also be noted that your Starbucks work experience really depends on the location. Some stores really have it great with amazing and supportive leaders, others unfortunately prefer suffering and totalitarianism….I’ve found my experience to be really quite awful and degrading in the suburbs, but when I’m in the city they really have some of the best teams. Despite my absolutely awful time spent at the store in the suburbs I still believe Starbucks is one of the best jobs to have while in school: great benefits, support exists ✨ (though varies where you are), flexible hours, decent pay/tips, and you can work virtually anywhere in the country. Just be sure to meet the manager and talk to some team members to make sure you’ll fit in. Good luck :)

I think you'll be okay considering Chick-fil-A has one of the most... let's say "robust" drive thrus, but Starbucks can get pretty stressful too. Keep your finger on the pulse of that burnout. Your wellness is so important. Hopefully you'll like Starbucks (I think you'll be fine). Best wishes, lovely 🌸
