My store is cracking down on Starbucks standards starting with no getting your own food/bev and your break starts when a shift tells you not after you get the drink and you have to wait in line. I work at a store where wait times for line/what you ordered can take 45mins at peak (when I work). I am more okay with the not making it thing to not be in the way but we should be able to put in the order and then after we get out drink/food it starts and we’re still working we can get the order placed ___mins before. How do you all feel if this is at your store too edit I would like to specify that I said CAN take 45 min it’s mostly 20-25 for a wait for food/bev bc we don’t have the best staffing for such a popular store and the line is usually 10-15

45 minutes??? Isn’t that the bigger issue. How is that even possible? How understaffed are you?

We have staff they don’t know what they are doing so it ends up being 2 partners and 50 drinks bc the others don’t know what they are doing. Lots of ppl call out and we dont have enough staff and just extend the hours. We have Larger drink orders like of 7 that come in thu mobile and cafe it’s not every day that we have it but it has gotten to a 20 min wait in line and 25 for drink/food. Mainly because they have newer ppl on reg who don’t know what they are doing and have a hard time flexing

I worked about 2.5~3yrs, left last June... and that policy was on crackdown off-and-on since fall 2020. What inevitably happened was our shifts took pity and allowed us take our own drink so long as we marked it out eventually. Food was a little harder to swing, it just helped to befriend the partner on warming. Same deal, eventually marked out. It had to be a discreet decision made by the shift, though, so try to follow the rules until your superiors get that stick out of their ass. You don't necessarily need to keep your head down, because it may help a bit to mention how difficult it is to nourish yourself during the 10s. If I'm not mistaken, the strictness will come in waves.

Our manager asked us all what we think about that rule. We all told her we think it's ridiculous to make us wait in line and that we all start our breaks once we sit down. She was surprisingly on board with us!

Were you able to bring up these points to your manager? More importantly: do the shifts and manager actually follow this every time? I worked at a store that really tried to rope me in on this, and I made sure to point out every instance this wasn’t being followed by the people trying to enforce it. Personally, I believe standards are important, but can be complicated being applied to stores that cannot reasonably keep up with them (either from lack of labor &/or being a super busy store). In which case, you have to adapt and do what’s best for the store as a whole. The “standards” where break starts when a shift says it does, and waiting in line to order, clearly do not work for your team. Another fair compromise should be found by talking to your manager about it. If they don’t hear you out, then they’re just a shit leader. You may have to go above them, consider transferring, or just start bringing your own food/drink if you can’t afford to leave.

Why don’t you have the POS partner push your order through on the DPM so it’s the next order they make?
