questions/concerns about the new benefit concerning a certain procedure (tw: discussion of SCOTUS ruling, abortion, miscarriage) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by onapapersun
Edit: thank you for the clarification about this update. Sometimes when I'm enraged, my reading comprehension tank.

I read the weekly update about the reimbursement for partners who needed to get an abortion in another state due to the restrictions in their current state. My question or concern is the fact that many partners live in southern states that have strict anti-abortion laws (I'm in Tennessee) and the closest state that allows abortion is about 300+ miles away. The weekly update says that it will cover up to 100 miles and it disqualifies a large group of us. Shit, even Dick sporting goods is providing up to $4000 in reimbursement for employees in need of an abortion.

Do you think this limitation will eventually be expanded or are we screwed? I'm disappointed with this because we southern states are struggling. I have one girl who has struggled with miscarriages and almost died during the last one. She is scared of what will happen if she gets pregnant again. What is going to happen to her if this happens again? They won't compensate her for the travel, hell they didn't even give her the cup fund while she was in the hospital and recovering for almost two months.

I want to be excited but at the same time, this company can't seem to redeem themselves for the way they have treated us. Here's some reimbursement but we are going to be cheap and only give you this much. Maybe I'm salty, maybe I'm still upset over yesterday's ruling but I just wish for once Starbucks actually care about their partners as they claim they do.

It's not 100 miles, if it's if services are unavailable within 100 miles.

If the limit was after 100 miles that gives a person a 200 mile radius.

it’s been a few days since i read the update so someone please correct me if i am wrong, but i thought it said they would cover expenses if a location is unavailable within 100 miles of your home?? so if you have to drive 80 miles yes that sucks and they won’t reimburse you butttt if you have to drive 300 miles away because that is truly the closest location, they will reimburse

Ohhhh. Okay thanks for the clarification. I was getting really confused about the wording. I have been so upset that I have not been to think straight 😔.

That's totally valid, I've been taking the head in the sand approach for the most part because of how stressed this has made me, Not for myself but for friends and peers in areas that don't protect them. I hope we can all find justice and peace soon.

Tell me about it. Along with the partner I mentioned in my post, I have another partner who has struggled get and stay pregnant as well. She had to go through IVF treatments and finally has been able to stay pregnant on her last viable egg. She is currently 15 weeks and we are always checking up with her to make sure she is okay. My heart hurts for them because I know they both want to be mothers so so bad. I'm scared of what's to come for them.

I appreciate that Starbucks cares enough to take care of their partners this way.

What is really concerning though is at the bottom line - “Starbucks will always consider women human beings, even if the state you live In doesn’t.”

I don’t think it’s placative, or performative. But I would really like to see some actual effort (donations, organization, etc) from major corporations to assist ALL people and not just employees.

If you really think women should be able to decide what to do with their own bodies, you believe all women have that right. Unless you’re just putting new bait on the employment hook.

starbucks doing some quick math and seeing that providing coverage for ABs is more cost effective than parental leave, insurance costs associated with birth, child care, enrolling child on your health insurance, etc. yeah, sure, it’s better than nothing. personally i’d never want my employer to know if i had such a procedure. im not phased by them, everything they do is motivated by the bottom line

You made some very good points. I usually am very guarded and skeptical about corporations attempting to care about it's employees but in this case it's something that is very personal. It's not about partner safety, it's about making sure we can forgive and forget their atrocious union busting tactics and looking good to the world.

Just read the updated post on partner hub they will reimburse up to 5000 non taxable dollars but obviously keep it to the closest state. Limit is 50 per hotel night and they will not reimburse certain things like food and entertainment.
So not a great one but better than before

Be on the lookout for underground transportation stuff happening in outlawed states too. I won't be surprised if underground legitimate clinics pop up too

starbucks has its flaws, but it’s pretty great of them to offer something like this.

On the hub under benefits it's there (I didn't read it but it's there) it's near the college plan and stuff for care@home and family benefits
