help with opening tasks for a closer (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gravydaddy38
i’m transferring to a new store and my new sm told me they were looking for openers so i said i could, but i’ve never done a full open because i was always primarily a closer (i’ve done early mornings but never been the opener) so if anyone has any opening tips that would be amazing!! i just don’t want to look like an idiot opening for the first time after having been a partner for nearly a year.

I will shy away from specifics as every store is a little different and peeps have already gave some solid advice, so what I’ll say is this; don’t be shy! Ask ask ask! “What can I do that will be most helpful rn?” Pay super close attention to those around you who are seasoned openers, and emulate their behaviors. Don’t be afraid to communicate and make sure everyone knows you are open to learning, and really want to pull your weight as quickly as possible :) just throw yourself into in, my friend, and you’ll do great!

I posted something not that long ago about faster opens and there's lots of good info on there about opens

I mostly work opens, Prioritize tasks that are kinda longer, short tasks are easy to do after opening, however stuff like coffee & tea which take time to brew and steep are harder to do after open same with changing over the sandwiches & pastry cart. while waiting for the teas & coffee to brew i usually set up sanitizers and bar tools, ((looked like a fool some mornings scrambling to get the stuff needed to make a drink after open quite a bit))

Personally at my store we usually split it someone does pastry cart & sandwiches while the other does all the smaller less time consuming tasks, but another good thing to remember just ask your coworkers which tasks there best at so it’s not as scrambled during open

Opening is typically more about the people than the tasks. Most of what you need to get down is timed (order submitted by 11 AM, food pull between 10-11 AM, and, if your delivery arrives over night, put that away first thing, I’d say that stores also do cold brew in the AM). Other than that, just get through the AM peak without complaints and then restock and prepare for your transition.

Also, think about when you’re a closer. What are things that your openers do that make for an excellent transition. Now do that.

At my store we do require all of these above and for the opener to have done a trash run, a bathroom check, and clean floors but we also do these tasks twice a day at my store. It really depends on how busy the store is and how focused on cleaning they are.
