Tips for a new employee (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Odd-Seaworthiness642
Hi everyone!

I'm accepting a job as a manager at a Starbucks in the airport near me. I have restaurant management experience which landed me the spot, but have not worked as a barista before! The majority of my job duties won't be making drinks, but I believe the only way to be a successful manager is being able to help out my team and understand what their job is like.

I was looking for any advice on what I should do to get a head start on learning or any words of advice anyone may have. Thanks so much!

Ask someone if you can do a bit of shadowing, NOT during peak! Lol

Study the recipes!! $1

As a barista who prioritizes cleanliness, take initiative and try to help clean as much as possible! My current manager would rather be strict about dress code, rather than proper cleaning, and it's incredibly annoying. Pick your battles, learn where you're crossing lines with your team.

You're team has a few vets who will help you as long as you're attentive.

And finally, it really is an incredibly fast paced job when it's busy, so be ready to be completely overwhelmed for a little bit. Good luck!

My SM has a great attitude about issues being opportunities and not things to be punished. And everyone has opportunities to develop something, so it doesn't come off as any one partner being singled out. Starbucks has a model that can be utilized to really help people be positive and motivated in their job, it just takes that leadership. Most of the issues you'll see online from employees come about because their SSVs/SM/DM don't reflect those values.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve been seeing this SSV acronym but don’t know what position that’s referring to. I don’t know how different things will be set up for me running a airport location that’s run by an outside company either, but I’m really excited to work with the Starbucks brand.

SSV = Shift Supervisor

It's a good company, genuinely. Take care of your people and they'll take care of you! Best of luck
