Are you supposed to find your own sick coverage?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Baby_Rocket_Ship
I’m barely ever sick but recently I’ve not been doing well, and I haven’t really even been calling out it was just yesterday, and my shift texted me later on ( I was an opening barista ) and said “please start trying to cover your own shift” And I replied that im sure I’ll be ok the next day and that I don’t think that it’s my responsibility to find sick coverage and all I hear is crickets. These people are so brutal 🥴

It sucks as a shift because like, we have basically no chance of covering an opener—nobody’s gonna be up at 4:30am for funsies looking at their phone ready to come in.
That said, it’s not your fault that Starbies has SMs schedule so thin that one call out can screw things up so much, and the partner guide specifically says that if you call out for illness or emergency coverage will be found for you. So while your shift might be a jerk about it, there’s not going to be discipline or anything.

Oh totally. I avoided having an issue about it because I was reminded I need to find coverage for myself if I’m sick so I just let the conversation go, there not much I can do about it. My peers already aren’t so nice so it is what it is. I definitely understand and I appreciate you assuring me that I’ll be fine, but I totally understand about the opening shift thing. If I knew I was gonna have a fever yesterday morning * for sure I’d of said something prior. I just didnt.

All seriousness aside I wanted to let you know that there actually is someone I work with that is up and ready to be called into work LOL 😆 just found that out today

Text back a pic of the partner manual that says you are not responsible for finding sick coverage.
Include "I apologize that my unplanned sickness has caused you to manage. I will let DM know that you need more training on company policy and personal responsibility."

This tends to backfire on the partner. Yes it’s correct, but doing so will get the DM to tell the SM to get their store under control. There will be no consequence besides a pissed off SM who is now watching you extra close.
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]5 points1y ago
Honestly the DM needs to get their store in order if the SM and SS are making baristas find sick coverage, if they don’t, they come in sick?
persona-20 points1y ago
Please start trying to cover your own shift and you will be written up for not doing so are different. I’ll toss in the group chat that I’m sick and post my shift on marketplace. Thats all the SSV ever asks us to do at my store.
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]5 points1y ago
My SM told us that sick coverage is either on her or the supervisors, it’s never our issue. My SM is on vacation and my SS is basically telling me to know when I’m gonna be sick and find my own coverage. That’s not okay. Sorry. But when the SS are sick or when they need something nobody gaslights them or gives them a hard time. I should pull out the handbook.

Also in my store a lot of rules only pertain to me or certain people. Trust me it’s messy
Texastexastexas13 points1y ago
That would not bother me.
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]3 points1y ago
I’m close to doing things like this. If they wanna get annoyed and or fire me that’s cool, billions of jobs exist and people quit everyday. Lmfao. The DM knows the kind of person I am, she still hired me knowing that 2 other companies fired me for abiding by the rules and putting their jobs on the line for not doing things rightfully.
venusiangirl3 points1y ago
you were in the right. so they’re understaffed we’ve all worked super understaffed shifts. it happens. when you’re sick you rest don’t worry about it.
Nraveles112 points1y ago
Nope. If you can’t make it and aren’t sick then yes you do but since you’re sick, shifts/Sm’s have to find coverage. It’s unplanned so obvi you can’t really find anyone.
BatWeary2 points1y ago
lmao at least you tell your store you’re sick. one of our baristas will just not show up and be like “oh yeah. i’m sick.” i have no idea how she hasn’t gotten in trouble yet
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]2 points1y ago
I’m concerned for the person at your store and hope she or he is being treated fairly. By the looks of your comment probably not.
BatWeary2 points1y ago
she gets treated the same as everyone else. what i’m saying is, if i no call no showed because i was sick i’d absolutely get a warning the first 2 times, and a write up the 3rd. she’s done this…6 days in a row now? she was never cleared to take a full week off. regardless, if she is feeling too sick to work she needs to call the store and tell us that.
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]1 points1y ago
One question though, is she no call no showing and when you call her she says it? Then that’s not okay.
BatWeary2 points1y ago
yeah, pretty much. it’s like “hey, where’s b at? she was supposed to be here 10 minutes ago.” only to call her and be like “oh yeah. i’m still sneezing a lot so i didn’t think i should come in yet (direct quote that she said this morning after ncns).”
no fever, no cough, just sneezing.
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]1 points1y ago
That’s insane
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]1 points1y ago
But also I don’t know for sure how she handles it. She could atleast show up and get sent home early, but a lot of the time people get mad because people get sick in the morning and then everyone’s mad at that barista.

Why did you miss work?
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]1 points1y ago
I had a high fever
fuwaldah2 points1y ago
Then all you do is call out and say you're sick. They have to find coverage. If you call out often, that's a different conversation.

Yeah I woke up with a fever an hour before my shift but I can’t control that. But I got you, I’ll call at 2pm the day before and let them know I might have a fever the next day but won’t know for sure cause it’s impossible to know.
Baby_Rocket_Ship [OP]1 points1y ago
You must be a shift lead that tells their coworkers to find their own sick coverage when your mad cause this comment is so inconsiderate
