That.. that is not what the updates have said. The updates have said that they will offer reproductive care benefits to unions, but the unions might opt to trade that benefit for something else. (None of them will, but it's an option.)
The conclusion that it's a "labor disciplining device" is not wrong, but let's not feed the misinformation fire by saying Starbucks plans to deny anyone care.

Starbucks doesn't have to wait to bargain like they heavily implied, they explicitly mentioned which benefits they were withholding from unionized stores in a recent anti-union posting. They continually misrepresent the law and their position.

I am not arguing that they're misrepresenting, lying, and trying to weasel out of their legal obligations. However, I work at a union store and we were explicitly told that if we have Starbucks health insurance, we WILL be eligible for reproductive care benefits.
Like, it was said clearly to all supervisors in the store. They have been clear about what they won't be giving us, but they were equally clear that we will have this.

I also work at a union store and the response I got every single time I asked was "I don't know, but you unionized so benefits are bargained for."
And what they're clear about not giving us is a major example of the way they misrepresent the law to pretend like they can't do something.

Legally, Starbucks maybe had to include that part about unions. The fact that it was negative for unions was just a bonus for corporate. Let all the stores currently working on contracts take note: This is a benefit worth fighting for.
