Union trashing at its finest (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by baristabish13
So our store (not unionized) got our first set of Starbucks Workers United campaigners in yesterday and I spoke with them. They were very friendly and informative, gave us some buttons and info right.

So how about I come in today and our SM&ASM are going around to only the shift team about how SWU are canvassing stores for interested partners to get info about unionizing and to not engage with them or let the baristas speak with them. No group communication to the entire store or anything (no duh I know).

Is this union busting or is it not? Our DM called our SM about it and I can’t help but laugh. How stupid do they think we are? Our store grosses a lot of money in our district too so before I leave; I’m for sure going to make sure this store is unionized. Just thought I’d share, thanks for listening.

Union busting at its finest. Managers have been asked to come up with plans on what they'd do if their store filed for unionization & is the number one question in interviews now.
Obviously, educate yourself and others on what a union actually is and how it'll help your store, but if you have any questions, feel free to reach out! I've been working with 3 stores and serve on my state's SBWU committee and my store's election results come out on the 1st.
Another thing that might help later if you're dealing with ULPs is to document EVERYTHING your manager(s) say about unions. Get it in writing and grab a witness or three. The earlier you can write a statement and send it to the lawyers, the better, even though you can file a ULP charge up to 6 months after the event.

Thank you for that helpful advice! Yeah apparently the SWU canvassers were making the partners uncomfortable and pressuring them to engage in a conversation. (DM’s words), which is not true because the individuals they mentioned that came by were nothing but kind and friendly. Their SM (who is a friend of mine) told them to just be polite, friendly, and be informative. Didn’t find out it was his team until like 5mins ago when he texted me that they wanted me to go to a meeting this week after meeting me yesterday. They came in to grab a couple of drinks, asked if anyone was interested in their info, and left. Gave us some buttons and let us take a pic of their info sheet they had. I’ve met a lot of pushy organizers over the years (I’ve worked in union jobs before) and these poor partners were basically painted in a villainous light when they weren’t even remotely pushy. But I’ll reach back out soon with some questions I have for you if you wouldn’t mind of course.

Maybe. If you are on the clock, you can't really talk to a union organizer, but you certainly can get info from them to talk later on. Either way, your manager is a moron. Here's how I deal with unions as a Starbucks store manager: I don't do anything. If baristas ask my opinion or for more information, I'll talk to them, but otherwise... It's not my place.
