How do ppl get a hold of a bunch of stolen gift cards?
I_love_stapler 2 points 1y ago
They purchase them 2 ways usually. 1. Stolen credit card. 2. They buy a gift card with a gift card but the first gift card has never been paid for. Have you ever had someone try to buy a gift card for a crazy amount with another gift card? The whole time they are stalling, talking you up, asking questions that seem genuine. They always seem to be on a phone or texting and then eventually they say ‘ok use this gift card’ it’s all a scam

In CA, they used to do this for the cash back scam. State law was a gift card for $10 or less had to be redeemed for cash. So they'd come in waves, breaking down a ~$500 card to really strange amounts, then another person would come in breaking those down to under $100, then another breaking each into $10, then others coming in with all $10 and drain the drawers and safe until we couldn't do operations.

So then we'd give them the worst denominations like rolls of pennies or nickels, then go up until our drawer was empty. Then just like 2 per person. Then THEY SUED, so had to go back to draining liquid cash and turning away cash customers.

It was a blessèd day when the update came in that we could turn them away, and hand them a paper explaining that they had to file a claim from a residence within the state and only so many per person per timeframe I believe. That put a stop to it immediately.

Funny enough, the ring leader came in a long time later and asked if I remember him. I gave him a knowing smile and said nope because he was actually a really nice person when not scamming??

100% I think they are now moving on to buying cups and other hard goods and then selling them on Offerup or FB marketplace.

That’s sus, I would create an incident report. Were they physical gift cards or from the app?

def a scam if they pop up as different account names. had a guy banned from doing that at our store.
demigirlhailee 3 points 1y ago
were they all $*.00 or were they random cents too? if all 00 then yeah probably a scam, but if not dude probably had adhd and lost all the cards over the years, found them while cleaning, and decided to use them on this because tbh sounds like something I would do

Likely he’s cashing out stolen credit cards by buying gift cards, buying merch and reselling
