customer temper tantrums (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lovey12120
is anyone else getting tired of customers throwing tantrums over the dumbest things or is it just me? like i’m fairly new, going on 5 months now and i’m already so sick of the childish tantrums customers at starbucks do.

some guy placed his mobile order at the wrong store and he started freaking out on my sm because we didn’t have it ready and she had to talk him through it as if he were 4.

today a customer asked for a decaf iced green tea and i told her we don’t have decaf iced green tea and she just walked away and started complaining very loudly to her friend about how we didn’t have decaf green tea, overall just overreacting.

my store has been running out of breakfast sandwiches by 10 am lately so a customer came in and they asked for a particular sandwich and i said we don’t have it and they just scoffed at me and walked away midsentence.

like why are so many people acting like baristas are out to get them?? and why are grown ass adults having temper tantrums over coffee? i just work here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had a customer today come through and he'd ordered a quad con pana. When he got to the window I started with my normal "good morning your total is 3.55 today!" Cheerful thing.

And then he just goes "no it's not"

And I kinda just looked at him and I verified the drink "quad con pana?"

Yup.

"Yeah that's 3.55!"

And he proceeded to tell me no. We rung it in wrong. I double checked to see if there was a weird charge in there anywhere which there wasn't.

He proceeded to tell me "its 3.45"

I began to explain that our prices recently went up and he told me that they didn't. That he just went to the other starbucks. They told him 3.55 which was wrong, and the next time they charged him 3.45. (Or maybe he said 2.95 he wasn't making a ton of sense in his argument here)

He did the whole "listen I've been coming to starbucks for 5 years and always get the same thing and it's always been 3.45 I know it's only 10 cents but it's annoying that you people never get it right."

Like. There's no way the price of your drink stayed the same over 5 years. The drink IS 3.55 like I didn't know what to tell him. I'd explained the price increase I'd checked the pricing and how it was rung in and what he'd ordered.

I told him I could grab the shift manager who told him all the same things I did and then he told us both he didn't want it and sped off. And we threw it away.

Does that dumb fuck know we literally press a button on a machine that's coded by people who work for corporate, which also happens to set the prices?
namastebetches 14 points 1y ago
i thought he meant no it's not a good morning lol
deeciphered 13 points 1y ago
Sure wasn't after that interaction lol

first red flag is ordering a quad con panna lmao

I had a lady today say “this iced tea tastes like it was brewed yesterday I want a freshly brewed iced tea” oh my god my eye is twitching just remembering it!! I explained that we brew our tea fresh each morning, but she looked unconvinced. I turned it over to my SSV bc I was honestly at a loss and idk what she did to ~make the moment right~ bc I walked away lol but best believe we talked mad shit after
OutrageousCounty5102 8 points 1y ago
this reminds me of this one customer we have. She orders two trenta black teas no water no ice. We have to freshly brew it for her everytime she comes because she claims it "smells" bad.

We caught her in the lie once because we poured two from the same batch and handed the second one out a little after the first one. She claimed the first one was bad.

The reason why she gets freshly brewed now was bc she threw a temper tantrum when we couldn't tell her when the last batch was brewed (we all came in after 2 and the shift didn't look at the teas) so she called our SM and gave her sob story she gave us.
cecilbdementd 7 points 1y ago
That’s sooo annoying wtf and like she has to wait extra time just to brew a fresh batch like wtf ppl have nothing better to do

I hate people that get special treatment because they act like assholes.
namastebetches 16 points 1y ago
tbh i think it's because of a mental health crisis in the us combined with people being at the end of their rope with life: overwhelmed with bills, overworked, underpaid, etc. their starbucks trip is their pick-me-up for the day, and when people are close to their breaking point if the one positive part of their day goes wrong sometimes it puts them over the edge. plus a lot of them are on their way to work and running late for the reasons above, and they can't deal with their shitty day without their drink. i'm not defending temper tantrums just trying to give a possible explanation for the steady increase in these behaviors.

yeah i get that it’s just when you’re causing a mini scene over a drink and yell at baristas for problems that aren’t their fault, it’s just frustrating. the issue is that some customers tend to treat baristas like we’re not actual people and that’s sucky🙃
Apprehensive-You5261 11 points 1y ago
I get it but I also don’t really care what their problem is, it doesn’t give them the right to treat us like shit. I’m disabled and I really don’t want to hear at work other people complaining about infantile things like the price of their coffee. Don’t like it leave simple. I’d never treat a customer service employee like these people treat us. We should be allowed not to serve people that act this way. Maybe they’d learn.
chipqueen2532 6 points 1y ago
I 100% agree lol. there’s bigger problems and I understand why this happens but that doesn’t excuse it 🤷🏼‍♀️
mrcupcake18 1 points 1y ago
Yes! Or like ok be mad but don’t take it out on me, ok talk shit and get the frustration out but leave the store when you do! Just have you’re tantrum somewhere else -___-

i think in a more realistic way it’s that they have sugar addictions disguised as caffeine addictions, and starbucks is where they go to get what they need
namastebetches 2 points 1y ago
I'm not sure how that's more realistic? yes many go for their "fix", but most who are truly addicted aren't aware of it. i'll give you that it's a contributing factor to the issue, but it's not the underlying reason for the problem. people turn to substances (including food and/or sugar) as an escape from their problems.

if that were the only reason you'd see more bar regulars having these same fits, but bar patrons are not on their way to work. they're finished and free to relax.
chipqueen2532 5 points 1y ago
I’m far past the point of caring. it’s fucking coffee lol. I don’t care what is going on in your life, especially if you come in to my cafe screaming at me over coffee

edit: you can be curious or sympathetic to their situation but there is zero excuse imo to be rude to customer service workers. they’re doing their jobs, no need to be rude or throw a fit at someone just trying to work
namastebetches 1 points 1y ago
you're missing the point. i'm not saying you have to care. i'm saying that the perspective of understanding that in some cases people may be having a breakdown and not intentionally being assholes may make the situation easier to deal with. i'm not sure why people aren't able to use critical thinking to dive deeper as to why this is such an issue. this behavior shows obvious mental health issues. it's abnormal, and i don't think under normal circumstances most humans want to go around screaming about coffee, which i find to be interesting and gives me curiosity as to **why**. or just go around pissed off about them all the time idc.

I don’t understand why anyone going into a fast food joint (that specializes in coffee) is so damn NEEDY.

If you ask for something specific and it’s not what you ordered, by all means, allow them to fix it.

But it’s a damn frozen ham sandwich from a toaster oven. You’re eating a fancy hot pocket. Calm the hell down.
plantainpapii 6 points 1y ago
Ya’ll gotta learn to just say “would you like a refund”.

That response ends a lot of tete e tete customers want to have with you.
Accomplished-Bad3856 5 points 1y ago
A lot of people stink up a joint just looking for some free shit. Surprisingly, more often than not it’s someone who flashes like they have big money.
bobbysangtheblues 2 points 1y ago
HARD agree! We are not having a dialogue do you want a remake (ONE) or a refund?
Necessary_Low939 5 points 1y ago
I can assure u they only act like this at Starbucks because of the making the moment right bs and free drink if the moment is shit. I work elsewhere and people are not like this. They’re also not like this at Dunkin.
Elegant-Tomato720 4 points 1y ago
I had a woman today ask to see the sizes of the cups then tell me they were all "too large" and just started at me like wtf do you want me to do lady
nutria_twiga 4 points 1y ago
Oh gracious. Have a regular that gets 3 drinks every day. 2 of them get stoppers. Silly me put a stopper in the wrong one yesterday. *rolls eyes* you would have thought I slapped him and called him a slew of bad words the way he reacted.

Over a stopper.

We have been running out of straws fast lately so implemented a rule that straws for fraps only & LET ME TELL YOU. We are getting berated, yelled at, eye rolls, you name it, over a piece of plastic. It’s really ridiculous to the point a customer wanted to speak with a manager because one of our baristas wouldn’t give him a straw. Wasn’t worth the fight so she just gave it to him. a full grown middle aged man. I can’t with this world anymore
kaidariel27 3 points 1y ago
My very last customer ever (former 232 here) threw a snit fit when I offered suggestions to replace a drink he didn't care for. Said I was backtalking!

I had a kid(maybe 10) come in last night asking for water. Watched me make the water, then proceeded to tell me it tasted funny and I need to fix it🤨 this is pure bread entitlement!!
namastebetches 3 points 1y ago
i think you mean purebred unless you're referring to their entitlement to pastries :)
