Starbucks policy (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Commercial_Amoeba_24
My store has started giving us write ups if we are past one minute late of our shifts. Is this now starbucks policy nationwide? Also we have to give a 3-6 months notice if we want to quit
Edit: we also have to ask for time off one month in advance
OneRoseDark 209 points 1y ago
The policy has always been 1 minute late is late, but most SMs don't bother being that strict because it's not worth it.

The notice thing is completely bullshit. If you don't have a contract, you aren't obligated to give notice at all. Two weeks is a courtesy, not a requirement.
demigirlhailee 30 points 1y ago
oh my SM will only even mention it if it's more than 5 minutes and won't do a write up unless it's more than 10 (unfortunately I've learned all this the hard way)
cody_1849 39 points 1y ago
If y’all notice on the punch in app, it won’t say you’re late until you’re 5 mins late. So if you clock in at 12:00, from 12:00-12:04 it will tell you “clocked in for coverage/key holder/ etc” but at 12:05 and after, it will say “clocked in late for coverage/key holder/etc.”

Also, why do they care when they’re so pressed for labor and money? Enjoy the extra minute you don’t have to pay me. And for the days I have to stay an extra 15 mins cause nothing got done prior to my shift and I had shitty staffing, me coming in a minute late isn’t effecting things in the grand scheme and I’m still putting in more time than others.

Considering my opening shift never pulls in until at least 5:01 I should be fired 100 times over if thats the case
OneRoseDark 19 points 1y ago
If your SSV arrives late but you were there on time, you can use the DRB to adjust your punch to "on time" by writing in 5:00 and SU for "system unavailable". Your SM will then be aware that you're reliably on time and it's not your fault you're clocking in late.

Every time I'm late I remind my baristas to adjust their punches so they don't get in trouble for being late.
sdmh77 3 points 1y ago
I had to be in at 430am!! 1 min late - kiss my a$$
RegularAsk143 109 points 1y ago
You are not even REQUIRED to give one single day notice - do not let them bully you or make up their own rules - from a former SM from way back 135\*\*\*\*who fought for the rights of her partners every step of the way.
katsandboobs 20 points 1y ago
Amen! At will employment baybeeeee! You are not obligated to do shit. Ask to see the company policy on it.
luvduvbunny 84 points 1y ago
Do you really think Starbucks cares if you don’t give 3-6 months notice?

What exactly are they going to do if you don’t give that much notice? Fire you?
FlanPleasant9052 48 points 1y ago
Damn, they really do want people to join unions, don't they?? They are really asking for it when they do shit like this, and a 3-6 month notice to quit?? Fuck that shit, get out of there OP, or if you wanna stick out, help create a union at your store so conditions will get better at least.
Luxanet 33 points 1y ago
Damn. Your store location s u c k s my dude. Sending love and support from a siren to another. ⭐️☕️💕
Accomplished-Bad3856 25 points 1y ago
If they get mad when you clock in one minute late, start clocking in 20 minutes early. 😜
Baby_Rocket_Ship 5 points 1y ago
Lmfao funny you say that I usually do clock in 15 min early but I was told not to do it anymore and now being late 1 min isn’t even brought up. My SM is always late ⏰ 🤣
Accomplished-Bad3856 1 points 1y ago
That’s the point exactly. You can either forgive my few minutes late or you can pay me for my few minutes early.
Baby_Rocket_Ship 1 points 1y ago
Yeah she started sending me home early those days and not talking about the minutes on the clock. It’s great .
Baby_Rocket_Ship 1 points 1y ago
Only for opening shifts though.
HamiltonPolka 14 points 1y ago
Starbucks is trash and treats their employees like shit. Getting out was one of the best things I ever did
affectionatepath1990 2 points 1y ago
Lol for real
dallizzlee 12 points 1y ago
Technically it’s Starbucks policy. It used to be 5 minutes, but it’s been 1 minute for a while. I just don’t think many managers uphold it.
adolfop_420 3 points 1y ago
Isn’t still 5 min doe? When u clock in later then 5 mins it’s says punched in late but before that it just says punched in
dallizzlee 3 points 1y ago
The only reason I know it’s not, is because I got a huge ass lecture from my SM about it. I got written up for being five minutes late because my freeway exit was closed and I had to take a huge ass detour. It was my first time being late, ever 🙄. She gave me a big ass lecture about how she could and should technically write me up if I’m even 1 minute late because that’s policy, but she gives everyone a 5 min grace period.
mrcupcake18 2 points 1y ago
Yeah cause it stupid and there worse things to written up for
Left-Needleworker422 8 points 1y ago
3-6 months?!
ProfessionalRock7940 7 points 1y ago
Give them no notice lol what the hell are they gonna do about it
Logical-Doubt-6021 4 points 1y ago
nahhh you need to transfer thats crazy.
floofxs2 3 points 1y ago
No. During openings it takes usually a minute to open the door and get in the back to clock in so it’s almost always 1-2 minutes after even though we are there on time. And no one has ever mentioned a minute or two off to me. Of course in general they will say if your shift starts at 3:30 that means on the floor at 3:30 that’s it. And notice is a courtesy not a requirement.
bryceofswadia 3 points 1y ago
Notices can’t be required unless you signed a contract saying so. They are usually just a courtesy. But realistically you are allowed to just walk off the job if you wanted to.
writingqueen22 3 points 1y ago
i would go to the department of labor about this notice thing. discuss it with your dm and make sure its documented
averysillyfellow 2 points 1y ago
3-6 months? Your manager is a confirmed asshole. You can give two weeks. You can quit day of. You can go on a 10 and never come back. You can be working and mid rush go “nah this isn’t for me” and leave. Starbucks cannot REQUIRE 3-6 months and honestly as a former manager all this would do is give your manager time to try and convince you to stay or be super passive aggressive and make your life miserable.
mylegalusername 2 points 1y ago
There is no minimum notice required if you choose to quit. Think of it as if they said that you’re fired, do they give you two weeks to keep working while you find a job? No.
Even if you chose to quit, the two week notice as a present for you that is only to save face with the company.

Late is late but yeah, not worth chasing a few minutes because that’ll make people quit even more.
Personally, I’d transfer. You can transfer as soon as your training is complete (verified this on the SM module “how to transfer a partner” on the hub. (There’s no 3-6 weeks. It just takes about a month to finalize.)
ThatOtherGuyTPM 2 points 1y ago
Just as a note, you can *request* a transfer. It requires approval from the SM and DM to actually receive a transfer.
dontknowhowtowalk 2 points 1y ago
I’ve always hated the 1 minute rule. More often than not you don’t know if you’re gonna be one minute late, maybe a traffic light or a slow car etc. My SM used to have a 5 minute rule, but that got overturned with the new manager. Anyway, 3-6 months is ridiculous and NOT a policy
salaciainthedepths 2 points 1y ago
I kinda agree with this one - every hospitality job I’ve ever worked, you’re expected to be on the bar, apron on and ready to work so anything less than turning up a few minutes early is late. We had block scheduling in my old store so I might have 7 baristas to take off and 7 to put on - if everyone’s just a few minutes late, all the morning baristas get pissed off, handover gets screwed, I have no idea who has no-showed vs who’s just late so I can’t even plan the shift and positions. It’s just a little selfish so it is late. I’d only partner file someone if it’s a recurring issue, esp if they’re not ringing to let us know ahead of time. The notice thing is ridiculous, there’s no way that’s in any contract you’ve signed
hautmess 2 points 1y ago
Would make sense now, I only know of the 5 minute rule but my old store I just left last month did recently, over the last week, fire 3 people for being a couple of minutes late. Also, 3-6 months notice? No, they can get a 2 week notice or nothing at all. 🥰
SmolLizardManth 1 points 1y ago
Sometimes I clock in a minute late because none of the ipads are working. So idk
kaidariel27 1 points 1y ago
The late thing is standard, but not usually enforced, as is the time off thing. The notice to quit is absolute nonsense. Most states are right-to-work states, meaning you have the right to work or quit as you please & your employer can hire or fire as they please. That being said, two weeks is good manners.
Commercial_Amoeba_24 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I guess my thing with the three months is i wont get a reference if i give two weeks instead
Kaluskydrak 1 points 1y ago
There is a 5 minute grace period, and you technically don’t NEED to give them a notice. 2 weeks if you’d like to use them as a reference, not at all if they’re pissing you off 🤷🏼‍♂️
_vannahloo_ 1 points 1y ago
I’ve been late only a handful of times, and for my store, as long as it’s not more than like 10 to 15 minutes, and you call to let somebody know, it’ll usually be okay :/ The whole 3 to 5 months thing is bullshit lmao thats insane
uh-no-why 1 points 1y ago
If it’s a minute late or an hour late, it doesn’t matter. However, most SMs don’t go that strict because you could be a minute late just because the iPads are acting up or not working in general. I’ve been two minutes late because I couldn’t find an iPad and then the one I found wouldn’t let me clock in.
However, the three to six months thing is wrong. You could quit with no notice technically. It is harder to get rehired (if you ever wanted to come back to Starbucks) if you don’t at least give a two weeks notice, but you don’t have to give notice. There are only specific jobs (I believe contract based jobs) that you have to give notice for. Starbucks is not one of those.
Timely_Piano_6808 1 points 1y ago
my store used to only give write ups if you were consistently a little late to shifts

then I had a morning I was supposed to be in at 9, woke up feeling awful from my period/pcos, puked otw out to my car, called my store (the manager at the time picked up), told her what happened and she said "so when will you be here??" and I just panicked and said "I can be there in 20, I just need to change"
ended up clocking in 10 mins late, working my 8 hour shift, stayed an extra hour bc we were down a person
end of my shift comes and my shift tells me the manager wanted to talk with my rq before I left
walk in and just see her happily smiling
"heyyy soo I have unfortunate news... youre being fired"💀

for more context yes I did have two previous write ups, but both were from similar situations where I was sick and was calling to say I couldnt come in and they would say I have to so then I was late and got in trouble for it
also this was from over the span of a little over 2 years and every month I get into so much pain I legit cant walk, and yet I pushed through it more than I should have just to make them happy

lets just say that manager has now been transferred after running that store into the ground yet again and losing/firing the majority of seasoned/hard-working partners we had left, and Ive heard shes been in management training since🙃
Freddie9915 1 points 1y ago
Lol. Let it burn. Zero notice and no fucks given when you quit.

My store manager told me she gets a notification whenever someone is later than 5 minutes but anything before that she doesn’t really care
Commercial_Amoeba_24 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I was three minutes late
PiscesQueen24 5 points 1y ago
Well that’s dumb, things like traffic happen and also sometimes those iPads and computer take a sweet minute to log in
spookyboi13 3 points 1y ago
before we got our ipad shipment in we had the computer and 2 ipads. 1 on bar for the dpm, 1 just floating. im an obnoxiously punctual person due to my upbringing but there were times two ipads were in use and the computer just... wouldn't load. honestly if thats the case id just like... write it in the punch log bc the system can be unavailable and make you late

one minute is ridiculous everywhere hospitality ive worked its been within five minutes to account for these types of things.
megs1288 0 points 1y ago
I would’ve been fired like multiple times lol
Have_Donut 0 points 1y ago
Late is late but at my store, as long as you are not a habitual offender you can be 30 minutes late and you just need to let us know what’s going on and you will be fine.
