Can someone explain how tips work? I had a customer hand me a tip and felt like my coworkers were staring at me to put it in the jar.
cornonthefrawg253 points1y ago
You can only accept tips individually if the customer brings it to you in a sealed envelope with your name on it weirdly specific policy but everything else goes in the jar
ThatBichAlex82 points1y ago
It’s because the camera watching you take money and put it in your pocket can be used against you if the context is unknown. Some barista could say you are stealing money from the tip jar and pull up that footage that shows you “taking the tip”
cornonthefrawg20 points1y ago
Ohhh ok that makes sense actually
grwlix9 points1y ago
which is super weird rule bc i doubt most customers know this and wouldnt take time out of their day to take out an envelope to tip us individually
Potential-Read-4824129 points1y ago
sometimes customers will either put the tip in the tip jar or give it to you. say thank you either way and when they personally give it to you just put it in the tip jar :)
gentletears [OP]65 points1y ago
So all tips go in the tip jar? This customer in particular was like making a big deal that I keep it so I wasn’t sure if we’re allowed to take individual tips.
florencelovelace6 points1y ago
you can only keep it if it’s in an envelope with your name on it, if it’s not you gotta put it in the tip jar

You can keep it if the customer explicitly says it’s for you specifically. Otherwise, if they hand you a bill and say “this is for you” then you just put it in the jar.
Freezykiwi132 points1y ago
I thought it had to be in a sealed envelope with a name on it in order to go to a specific person?
Beg1nAga1n93 points1y ago
This is incorrect. The only way you can keep it is if it’s in an envelope sealed for you specifically. Some SM’s may be more lax than that, but then you’d have to talk to them.
zedazeni25 points1y ago
I was going to write an addendum. I’ve worked Xmas Eve (not considered a holiday) and have customers give me money and explicitly say “I don’t want this in the tip jar. This is only for you 3 working right now.” I’ve had a few different SMs and they’ve all agreed that that counts.
I’m pretty sure the general consensus is “it must be explicitly stated.” Most SMs I think probably follow that rule (at least in my experience and I’ve worked in 6 stores across two states).
Freezykiwi3 points1y ago
Nvm just saw your other comment :)

I had a woman make a point to give me a tip and told me not to give it to anyone else. I waited until she left because she was yelling at me to not put it in the tip jar as she was walking out and I put it in the tip jar. It was a very awkward situation. She made a huge deal out of it and told all my coworkers that they weren’t doing their jobs and that I was the only one doing my job. Which wasn’t true (SSV was doing a count so he had the store iPod out so looked like he was on his phone, drive thru were talking to each other waiting for a drink to come out, I was helping cover front and bar simultaneously. But I didn’t even make her drink. Whoever was on cafe/mobile bar did, so clearly someone else was doing their job).
gentletears [OP]24 points1y ago
If they hand me the tip I usually leave it on the counter and put it in the tip jar when they walk away. I don’t know if this customer had seen me do that but they insisted I pocket it and I just felt very put on the spot yknow and I could feel my coworkers staring at me hard. I put it in my apron then when the line died I put it in the jar.

Tips are calculated by dividing the week’s total tip money by the week’s total labor hours (total number of hours all partners worked) to get your hourly tip rate. Then each partner has the hours they work multiplied by the tip rate to get that week’s total tip amount.
Super simple example: If 10 partners work 10 hours, there’s 100 total labor hours. If there’s $100 in tips for that week, that’s a rate of $1/hour. Each partner gets $10.
If a customer hands you a tip, you always put it in the tip jar. Pretty much the only exception is if the customer explicitly says “this is for only you,” has the money in an envelope with a partner’s name, or otherwise specifics by name who the money is for.
gentletears [OP]11 points1y ago
Does that get added to my paycheck or do I come back to pick it up?
zedazeni28 points1y ago
Your cash tips are done weekly by an SSV, you pick them up weekly.
gentletears [OP]26 points1y ago
….. I’ve been working here for almost 3 months and have never picked up my tips. Thank you for this clarification!
zedazeni21 points1y ago
Ask your SSV since they’re kept in the store’s safe
xxtere5sxx15 points1y ago
They probably do the tips on a day you aren’t there and that is why you haven’t collected your tips but once you ask them for your tips they will give you an envelope with cash for all the weeks you missed.
OrderedMyLaughOnEbay10 points1y ago
Have fun with your extra bonus! Lmao
mattwillwake1 points1y ago
I’ve never seen a SSV calculate tips. lol. They’re just the ones who pull them from the safe in my experience.

they’re staring at you to put it in the tip jar because that’s where it’s supposed to go lol. all tips go in the jar and are split between baristas. this is so the person on the register doesn’t get a giant amount of money while the person on bar gets none
gentletears [OP]3 points1y ago
It was late and my brain was fried so I didn’t add any context. My bad.
TylerJ71612 points1y ago
When I was on window and I'd be handed a that was insited for me, I'd take it in the window and set it on the counter. Then after they drove off, maybe after the next car I would put it in our tip jar. A white lie to the customer and and honest placement of money to me and my partners
Mea-fae_Owl736 points1y ago
I believe there is no specific policy if a partner can accept “personal tips”. I know SMs have created their own. I’ve had some SMs say under no circumstances are personal tips allowed, some say if it’s in a sealed greeting card (like bday, Christmas, etc) that had “gift money” it’s ok, and another who said if they hand it to the barista outside of their shift. Right now my SM is on the mindset that a tip is for everyone. It all goes in the tip jar. If a customers tells me it’s just for me, I pretend to put it in my apron pocket and as soon as they are gone I put it in the tip jar.
Zealousideal-Star4483 points1y ago
My rule is if it’s 10 bucks or more and no one sees it then it’s yours. The official policy is a stupid rule I choose to ignore. However when the holidays Start coming around the envelope rule is more strict, I’ve known baristas to keep those little envelopes with their names pre written in their apron for customers
elysemosunset3 points1y ago
The tip should go in the jar every Tuesday for us we calculate tips for the week. It’s how much you get for that week divided by total tip-able hours for each partner that worked that week they get divided up to everyone so yes you should put it in the jar for everyone. I’m surprised no one said anything to you.

Honestly, my training wasn’t great. I have friends who have worked for the company and all of them explained how rushed and incomplete my training was. It was late and I didn’t add context but I usually take the tip and have it on the counter then put it in the jar when they walk away. This particular customer didn’t leave until they saw me pocket it. I put it in the jar when the line died down I just felt very put on the spot. I have seen a few posts on here and tiktok about not being handed tips and realized I didn’t really know our tip policy.
Crazy_Consequence_592 points1y ago
I agree, the training used to be extremely rushed. They just updated the training plan so it is now 40 hours (spanning 2 weeks) to train a barista. I'm excited to see the improvement in the new green beans! I wouldn't blame yourself at all for not knowing the tip policy; I didn't when I first started either.
gentletears [OP]2 points1y ago
For my barista certification I had to make a flat white which I was told how to make ONCE. The only reason I remembered was cuz I found a cheat sheet online. 😭
Minimiahmoose2 points1y ago
What do you mean barista certification?! Do I have to take some kind of test once I’m done training?! 😭 I just started training last Monday and by next Saturday I’m on my own 🥺🥺🥺 I’m so scared
Crazy_Consequence_592 points1y ago
They only went over it once?? That's insane to me!
Acceptable_Rate_27292 points1y ago
Really?! I only got 4 shifts of training, and that ends tomorrow! 😭
Crazy_Consequence_591 points1y ago
They just barely updated it with the new launch. You must've just missed the cut off 🥲
ThrowawayTheOmlet2 points1y ago
All of the partners (at least should) be working very hard to keep the store running smoothly, so even if you’re the one on bar or register, when you get a tip it goes to everyone. So yes, put it in the jar. you’ll get your share of it later based on how many hours you work.
The only time I’ve ever taken a tip and kept it was when I was on my lunch break and a customer asked me to wipe down their table lol. She shoved a couple dollars into my hand and told me to keep it. Was off the clock so… my money imo
RinnTheOtter2 points1y ago
All tips are combined, because they are calculated using an average based on the number of hours you work
