How do y’all who work at DT stores keep your sanity???(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by peepeepoopaccount
I work at a cafe only but I picked up a shift at the only drive thru in my city today and I came in during a rush, immediately placed on bar, and my anxiety was off the wall with how busy everything is and dealing w so many different types of orders 😅 the staff was super sweet and helpful but it was so crazy during peak, way more than my store, and you need way more employees too. Made me appreciate my tiny little cafe only store a little more. I can imagine DT customers too are ruder than cafe customers. I had one customer be rude to me today and it took my full will not to be rude to her back.

Idk I just treat it like a video game and every shift I’m trying to beat my high score for how fast/accurate I can be. Only way to not get over stressed by the amount of orders. Customers are npcs

That's what I always tell my coworkers.
That I'm just here playing a barista simulator all day.

Yea this!!! It’s like playing Diner Dash except it’s Bux Dash. I’m aware of the mini bosses who will enter the platform as well.
We do a nearly equal split between DT, cafe and mobile so we’re always slammed in each channel all day long from 6a-6p, open 4:30a-10p………

Brave of you to assume we are sane. I just space out and let chaos do whatever it wants. I don’t get paid enough to sacrifice my mental health.

for me it helps to not have sanity to begin with. but if i had any, i wouldn’t be able to keep it

You kinda just bubble yourself off of that makes sense. Your on bar you don’t think a out customers you only think drinks. Your on window your job is money and people don’t think about drinks or cafe… it’s terrible cuz if your on bar and a cafe customer try’s to talk to you it pops your bubble.

My store was lucky enough to have 3 bars for a while -- 1 DT, 1 mobile, and 1 main hot bar. Definitely made things easier!

for my store it’s honestly a lot of fun. we have the fastest dt times in the district and have held that for like 3+ years now. the whole team is friendly, respectful, and so much fun to work with. keeping our sanity is definitely easier when everyone is very open with communicating how they feel during the shifts. though, everyone at my store is definitely running on red bulls from the publix next door <3

That's the neat part. I haven't been sane since my 3rd DTO shift

I get a lil high drink blonde shots and let the dissociation hit and by the time I’m off bar it’s already been like 2 hrs a
opalciara1 points1y ago
i just get on bar and zone out like i’m playing a mind numbing game of cooking mama or like i’m a sim. peak goes by pretty fast in that head space lmao
junjoonie1 points1y ago
i like the fast chaos time tbh - esp if im on bar then it’s a constant race to be fast imo
reddjedett1 points1y ago
Answer: We don't.

I love being on drive bar during peek cause honestly I can never turn my brain off from worrying about like, everything, and when I’m there I don’t have time to think, it’s very therapeutic

Just gotta go with the flow. Make a mistake? Just fix it and move on. Having good coworkers is also a big part of not ripping your hair out

personally, i HATE having downtime at work, it makes the time go by so much slower and i’m just bored 😂 most of our orders at my store come in via drive thru which also means the cafe is empty a lot of the time, so both bars are usually focusing on drive thru unless a bunch of mobiles come in :) i think regularly working during peak is something you adjust to and then working during less busy times becomes painful because you aren’t running around the whole time haha

It’s a different mindset I think. I’d do drive bar all shift every day if I could bc it requires like zero executive function, you just get in the pattern.
