So.. this customer named “Chad” has been coming to our store for 2 weeks now and has demanded we make him a caffè vanilla Frappuccino, no frapp roast, sub 4 shots of espresso. I was like cool, so vanilla bean with 4 shots, ok. Buuuuuut! He said no no no, stop what you’re doing (dt screen). You are to ring it up AS a caffè vanilla, but only charge me for 1 shot, and then in the ask me put 4 shot of espresso. Every single barista with a headset stopped dead in their tracks as I said Excuse me?!? And chad says, Yes. It’s something wrong with your pos system, but this is correct substitution, it states so in your (something) manual.
So! I’m here to ask… is this correct? If it is, where can I find this information because neither my shift nor my sm knew, or remembered anything about this, and they’ve been with the company for 8 years. I’ve only been with the company for 3.5 years and I have never heard of this either.
Also, I posted this here because I was thinking about posting it on the Starbucks sub but I don’t want customers to get ideas that might not even be true.
Zerokamour70 points1y ago
I would ring him up as the Vanilla Bean with 4 shots. I think he’s trying to pay less. If something is wrong with the POS, then it will be found out and fixed that way.

Exactly what I thought. So he threw the biggest fit and we told him there’s no such thing on our menu and that it wouldn’t be fair to customers who buy crème Frappuccinos and add shots. He then started the name calling and threatened to call corporate. I said please do so, this is our store number, have them contact us. All while making his Frappuccino. But he literally holds up the line for 15 minutes having the same fight. We’ve charged him his drink for 1 week, the way he ordered it because there’s been a lot going on at our store and we barely had our store meeting and all agreed to stop charging him the way he wanted to.
East Texas peeps, beware.
Bazzock0412 points1y ago
This is the way. I do the same all the time - “here’s the number for corporate and our store # is this, my name is thus, you have a great day”
matthewlillardluvr1 points1y ago
where in east texas was this omg

Decaf frappes don't get charged for espresso. So you should charge him the difference of shots. You didn't say what size.
I'm assuming he was referring to the beverage resource manual. And it does say it's 1/2/3 for swapping shots for frappe roast.
As soon as he started name calling, I'd have booted his ass.
And there are customers on this sub, not as much as the other one, but still quite a few.
Responsible_Snow710932 points1y ago
But it wasnt a decaf frapp or a cream. The guys was tryna order a cafe vanilla frapp but wanted to sub the frapp roasts for shots of espresso. Dont u have to charge for it that way?
maidofpuns13 points1y ago
If you treat decaf shots as a substitution for frap roast without charging for shots, then you should also treat regular shots as a substitution without charging. I was always taught that if someone wants to specifically substitute shots in a frappuccino that you don't charge for it. If the shots are *in addition* to the frap roast, you charge. So in OP's case, they should have charged "Chad" for a (presumably) venti CVF, no frap roast, sub espresso 3 shots add 1 shot and charge for only the 4th (or "extra") shot.
Responsible_Snow71093 points1y ago
Ohh i see what ur saying. Yea i was never trained on what to do in the situation of subbing the frapp roast for shots. I also have never been asked about that my entire time working with starbucks
maidofpuns2 points1y ago
Mhm, it used to be more common when Sbux was more actively promoting stuff like affogato shots. I'm at a licensed store now so we get it even less frequently than at my old corporate location, but that rule has always made sense to me and we still do it here when requested [:
annoyinglyuseless [OP]12 points1y ago
^this is my question too.
annoyinglyuseless [OP]14 points1y ago
Where can we find the beverage resource manual? Is it the recipe cards we get? Like the little flash cards?
Sorry, it was venti. But back to what you were saying. So is it just for decaf Frappuccinos? So it would be Decaf (whatever) Frappuccino and then you’d charge the “extra” shots? But then also, if he wanted regular shots.. it’s not this.
Sorry if I’m being confusing.
aee788 points1y ago
Resource manual should be on the ipad or maybe partner hub. And pretty sure it use to say that there's no charge subbing the 1/2/3 regardless if it's decaf or not. It's probably been at least 5 years since I last looked at it, so it could have changed.
annoyinglyuseless [OP]3 points1y ago
I’m on the iPad and I’ve gone back and forth on the beverage resource manual and I can’t find it. If anyone finds it, can y’all let me know? I’ve gone through it 3 times and I feel blind now. Lol. Like it’s right in front of my face and I’m missing it.
Alarming_Base31481 points1y ago
There are specific sections on modifiers for drinks in store resources folder. Have you tried those ?
I'm now curious too, because information like that is *not* on the recipe cards.
Maybe this where it also shows how to correctly build a Frappuccino with espresso so it is not soup. It makes me crazy that people just throw it the shot(s) in the blender.
persona-26 points1y ago
iPad for beverage resource manual.
SelectAioli26 points1y ago
we have a regular at our store who we’ve fought tooth and nail about this. He’s super condescending and rude, especially to women and younger partners. He always gets a venti frap with 2 long shots and one regular shot (why?? idk sounds disgusting). He took it up to corporate, and our DM came back and said he gets the 3 shots for free. So i assume it fits with the 1/2/3 sub rule. However when he asks for the extra to be poured into an extra cup he gets a HARD no from me just for being as rude as he is😤
annoyinglyuseless [OP]3 points1y ago
2 longs shots?? No thanks.
Hoax_Pudding_Cup24 points1y ago
This is just more evidence that it takes one store to ruin things for everyone. It is not in any standard to sub shots for frap roast, unless it's decaf. One store caved and now a customer is on their high horse.
annoyinglyuseless [OP]9 points1y ago
He said Don’t worry, I’m only here for 1 more week. Like okay? But I want you gone now. Stop terrorizing me. 😭

Half decaf would also be free?
Zealousideal-Star44810 points1y ago
That dude lying through his teeth
annoyinglyuseless [OP]1 points1y ago
I’m definitely sure he is.
shesallglowedup9 points1y ago
I would just say sorry I think you’re confusing our decaf shots for frap roast but I’m gonna charge you for 4 shots
annoyinglyuseless [OP]3 points1y ago
Definitely using this. Can’t wait to hear what he says..
shesallglowedup3 points1y ago
Honestly if all else fails just show him on the app how he’s ordering it and that it charges for shots, that’s my go to for a lot of things
annoyinglyuseless [OP]2 points1y ago
Ooohhhh I like this. I’m definitely going to do this one.
Petty_Pentagon6068 points1y ago
I’m pretty sure someone even posted a picture on here within the past year but substituting shots for frap roast isn’t a charge and if it was a venti since it gets three then you would just charge for the one. I haven’t read the resource manual in a while but that WAS the standard for sure. If it changed you’ll definitely be able to check on the partner hub and or iPad if you want to know for sure standards. * when I went on the app right now I rang up a Frappuccino then under shots I just put signature espresso so on the label it said “mocha cookie signature espresso “ but didn’t charge me for shots
queenregina924 points1y ago
Under the roast you have to add a number of shots. It does charge you.
georgecarlinsneice6 points1y ago
He just wants to get the shots of espresso for free I’m pretty sure.
witchyybabe4 points1y ago
we have a lady who orders an espresso frap with 3 shots instead of froast and insists we just put it in the ask me. she claims to have talked to the district manager about it and won't leave the drive thru until we do it "correctly" so we've just given up.
annoyinglyuseless [OP]1 points1y ago
I’m so sorry you have to go through that. I don’t want to be part of this club anymore. I was semi-happy before this. Lol
fuwaldah3 points1y ago
Decaf Frappuccinos substitute espresso, and there is no change in price. This doesn't really seem all that egregious to me.
piratedashel2 points1y ago
This was something talked about around 14 years ago or so when we started making Frappuccinos the way we do now. Sub shots 1/2/3 depending on the size, and then charge for the extra. I don’t like it, i think it’s dumb, but I haven’t heard anyone talk about it since about 2009 lmao.
Mea-fae_Owl732 points1y ago
Ok, a lifer here and even I can’t find the answer to this question. They have changed their rules so often I’m not sure which one to stick to or when it was last updated. Here’s my experience… when Frappuccino roast was introduced we could sub shots for roast (1,2,3) for no charge. It was on the recipe card for coffee Frappuccino (I have tried finding it on the hub using the sub espresso for shots and it brought up the recipe card with the words DISCONTINUED across the card). I heard from a partner that it was communicated in an update that we stopped doing it as of this year. I couldn’t find the update or anything that suggest either a yes or no. I used to call up PCC to ask for the exact standard on things but lately they don’t give real answers either. Honestly it’s up to the SM what they want to do. Some are “make the moment right” is the answer to everything and some are situational and these are are standards 🤷🏽♀️
JFay2 points1y ago
You can absolutely sub espresso for frapp roast without charging for each shot, but not being at work right now, I have no way to prove it. I’m not even sure it’s still on the books, but it was years ago.
rubberboss11 points1y ago
This person is correct. 193xxxx
LY-_-2 points1y ago
Did he want decaf and an add shot? Cause decaf doesn’t charge. And it’s either 1 fr= 1 shot or it’s 1,2,3 for espresso frap
b99__throwaway4 points1y ago
unless i’m wrong, i’m pretty sure all espresso fraps only get one shot no matter the size
annoyinglyuseless [OP]1 points1y ago
Not decaf. He said, I want a venti caffè vanilla Frappuccino. No frapp roast, substitute it for 4 regular shots and you’re only going to charge me for 1 shot.
cartwheelkristina1 points1y ago
I just tried to "order" this on the app and a Cafe Vanilla Frap would not let me do 0 frap roast to fully sub it for espresso. I could only put it to 1 pump minimum. Adding 4 shots charged $4, and it would be the same if you put in a regular VB, but the base drink would just cost slightly less.
BlooperBoo1 points1y ago
Only difference is coffee base instead of cream. This guys just tryina give u the runaround
rnaggie531 points1y ago
Hey this is very wrong. Charge him for 4 shots. Also when u do the math for caffeine. 1 shot of esp= about 3 pumps of frap. He’s scamming
annoyinglyuseless [OP]1 points1y ago
So my shift supervisor on duty brought this up. Told him that volume of frapp roast vs espresso is not the same and that it doesn’t seem correct. But eventually caved.
rnaggie531 points1y ago
Damon I’m gonna look into this because I don’t know where this customer is coming from or where he heard this.
